Volume II only of a two-volume set. No writing. Mild hand soil to cover and faint foxing spots to endpapers. In internet reviews Kingston is rebuked for stating "eight knots an hour" when a knot is a sea mile per hour making Kingston's reference to time redundant. In another the comment is made that Kingston referred offhand to the prevalence of illegitimacy in this travelogue through northern Portugal. Only in 1851 did Kingston publish the first of the adventure stories for boys that made him famous. Volume II has 364 pp. John W. Parker hardcover

From the library of Professor George M Foster. Sabin:42852; Hill page 186 1st edition.<br /><br />G F Lyon was an English traveler born in Chichester England in 1795; died at sea in October 1832. He entered the British naval service in 1809 was present at the attack on Algiers by Lord Exmouth in 1816 and in 1818 was commissioned to accompany Joseph Ritchie on his tour of exploration into central Africa. Ritchie died in Fezzan and Lyon returned to England after encountering many dangers and privations which he described in his Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa London 1821. In 1821 in command of the Hecla he accompanied Captain William E. Parry on his arctic expedition publishing on his return The Private Journal of Captain G. F. Lyon 1824. In 1824 he sailed in command of the Griper' with the mission of exploring Melville peninsula and following its western shore as far as Turn-again he found after three months' searching a passage through the group of islets called Southampton island but was unable to enter Repulse bay through Sir Thomas Rowe's Welcome. On 13 September a violent tempest compelled him to return to England. The story of the voyage was told in A Brief Narrative of an Unsuccessful Attempt 1825. He subsequently passed several years in Mexico and died on his return from a second visit to America. His remaining works are The SketchBook of Captain G. F. Lyon during Eighteen Months' Residence in Mexico No. 1 London 1827 and Journal of a Residence and Tour in Mexico in 1828 London 1828.<br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. 20896Socialist Leader London. No place or date 1950. On four 4to leaves with punch holes in margins. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with rust staining in margins from paper clip. On one side of the leaves are the four pages of typescript of Mannin's 1950 book 'Jungle Journey' paginated at the head 92 94 95 and 99. The first page has a short manuscript addition to the text in her hand "tremendous" for a mistyped "profound". On the other sides of the leaves are the first four pages of the carbon of the review the concluding three lines being carried over to the side of the leaf with the typescript where they are placed above the pagination '- 92 -'. The review is headed 'LEAD KINDLY LIGHT A Review of Vincent Sheehan's sic New Book by Ethel Mannin.' Sheean's book had been published in America in 1949; but Mannin is reviewing the 1950 English edition: 'Cassell & Co. Ltd. 17/6d net.' The review begins: 'It is possible that most readers of the Socialist Leader will like myself know Mr. Vincent Sheehan only as an able American journalist of the John Gunther school outstandingly perhaps the author of In Search of History – the political history of the dangerous thirties which mounted up to the disastrous forties. His new book Lead Kindly Light the title of Gandhi's favourite Christian hymn which is about India generally speaking but primarily about the Mahatma lifts him clear out of the ranks of journalism and into that literary-philosophic field dominated by Aldous Huxley.' She conclues by finding Sheean's work 'an extremely important book; it is a book to buy if possible; otherwise to place the top of the library list. Its publication just now is very timely.' The Number 2 is shown on reverse otherwise the reverse is blank. John Thomson produced His New General Atlas between 1814 and 1821. Folded as issued. Beautiful font design title banner. John Thomson 1777 - 1837 was a Scottish bookseller and publisher active in the early 19th century who was one of the leaders in Europe who favored detailed and accurate mapping over the decorative and elaborate cartouches that appeared in earlier maps. His most important work was "Thomson's New General Atlas" and his "Atlas of Scotland".
