Illustrated with many photographic plates large octavo pp xii 431 slightly age-toned and with signs of use internally lacking the front endpaper front hinge a little weak with the very large folding map in the rear pocket but this is very worn and lacking two sections LACKING the tables of vocabularies original blue cloth a little worn the spine head slightly frayed. VERY SCARCE. The author educated at Eton where he was proficient in Oriental languages. Davies then joined the Army and was sent to British-controlled Burma in 1887 and to Siam in 1892. In 1893 he was attached to a survey unit which surveyed the passes between Burma and China which located the Crouching Tiger Pass the Heavenly Horse Pass and the Han Dragon Pass. On completion of the team's objectives Davies remained in China to explore the Yunnan area. On his return to England he was asked to survey a potential railway route from India to the Yangtze river via Yunnan and in 1898 returned to Burma. Initially intending to be a member of Scott's party Mawson decided to command his own expedition the first official Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Mawson charted more than 2000 miles of coastline and nearly lost his life in a wild sledge journey. In the process he developed a detailed scientific analysis of George V Land and Macquarie Island and produced this classic account of heroic age exploits which includes stunning photography from the camera of Frank Hurley. Shore parties wintered at Cape Denison and on the Shackleton Ice Shelf. The former base was unfortunately located in an area of constant gale-force winds -- hence the title. In December 1912 a sledge party reached the South Magnetic Pole located by Eric Webb. Meanwhwile another party consisting of Mawson Ninnis and Mertz explored eastwards across George V Land. Only Mawson returned to base Ninnis having fallen down a crevasse and Mertz having died of starvation and compliications. The expedition would discover 1320 miles of land including the Mertz Denman and Scott Glaciers and the Davis Sea and map 800 miles of coastline between Gaussberg and Cape Adare all along the Adelie Land coast and beyond. A letter from Sheila Murphy of the Aurum Press publisher of Letter from New York accompanied the bookplates a copy of the letter is provided with this item. The letter mentions Arlene Wolff Hanff's best friend who accompanied her on the visit. The printed dedication in Apple of My Eye is to Arlene Wolff: '. Her awesome talents in the performance of these duties and her selfless devotion to the City of New York are equalled only by her talent for selfless and devoted friendship.'. A rare signed copy of Moneta's account of four winters spent on the South Orkney Islands between 1923 and 1929. To date this remains the only published work on life the South Orkneys. From the private collection of Eric Kenneth Prentice 'Kenn' Back meteorologist who worked with the British Antarctic Survey for nearly 40 years recipient of both the Fuchs Medal and the Polar Medal and a descendent of Sir George Back the Arctic explorer. With Back's bookplate to verso of front free endpaper. Kenn Back co-authored the first English translation of this work issued as 'Four Antarctic Years in the South Orkney Islands. An Annotated Translation of Cuatro Anos en las Orcadas del Sur' in 2017. For his research Back assembled a collection of all Spanish editions of this work we also have most of these still in stock.
