Notre exemplaire est une des très rares épreuves imprimées sur papier Japon, toute petite trace de punaisage dans l'extrémité de la marge supérieure gauche (Our plate is one of the few copies printed on Japanese paper. Original plate in good condition). LES MAITRES DE L'AFFICHE, prestigieuse publication d'art, éditée par l'atelier de lithographie Chaix, dont la parution s'étala de décembre 1895 à novembre 1900. Chaque livraison comportait 4 planches de reproduction en chromolithographie d'une remarquable qualité d'impression des plus belles affiches illustrées des grands artistes français et étrangers (auxquelles il faut ajouter 16 planches de lithographies originales données en prime aux abonnés). Lors de l'Exposition universelle de 1889, fut organisée la première exposition rétrospective dévolue à l'affiche, celle-ci devait valider la reconnaissance officielle d'appartenance de l'affiche au monde de l'art. Jules Chéret (1836-1932) y sera sacré '' Maître de l'affiche '', c'est aussi à cette date que Seurat commencera à collectionner les affiches de Chéret. P., Ménard et Desenne, 1819. 6 volumes in-8 reliés pleine basane havane racinée (reliure d'époque), dos long, portrait en frontispice au premier volume des Oeuvres posthumes ; de 330 à plus de 500 pp. par volume, pièces de titre et de tomaison noires, caissons soulignés de 4 filets dorés et ornés de fleurons, roulettes d'encadrement sur les plats. quelques coins fragiles et arrondis, une départ de fente à un mors, un petit manque de cuir au bas d'un dos, une coiffe faible, néanmoins bel exemplaire. C. C. de Rulhière, tour à tour officier et diplomate, poète et historien, fut l'ami de J.-J. Rousseau et des philosophes. Il accompagna le baron de Breteuil à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1760 et il retraça plus tard la révolution russe de 1762 (O. Posthumes). Il écrivit pour les Dauphin (Louis XVI) une histoire de la Pologne. Sainte-Beuve le donne comme "écrivain spitrituel, savant et habile". Les Oeuvres contiennent : Eclaircissements historiques sur les causes de la Révocation de l'Edit de Nantes, poèmes et discours en vers, épitres, lettres en vers et en prose, contes, épigrammes, poésies diverses. In 8°; (8 compresa antiporta illustrata), 329, (9) pp. e 19 c. di tav. fuori testo con scorci di monumenti e vedute, ognuna protetta da velina. Legatura realizzata intorno al 1950 in mezza-tela con piatti foderati con carta rossa. L'opera venne tirata in soli 600 esemplari. Prima, assai rara edizione, di questo viaggio descrittivo fra le bellezze artistiche di Roma e Firenze, scritto dal celebre storico del teatro, critico e giornalista russo che scrisse sotto lo pseudonimo di S. Vasiliev. Dal 1875 Flerov collaborò stabilmente al "Russian Bulletin" e al "Moskovskiye Vedomosti", dove pubblicò feuilletons teatrali, rassegne musicali e reportage su mostre d'arte, firmandoli con lo pseudonimo di S. Vasiliev. Ha collaborato con "Russian Word" e "Russian Review", dove sono stati pubblicati numerosi suoi articoli sul teatro. Il libro "Pictures of Italy" contiene lettere e appunti dal viaggio in Italia di Sergei Flerov: la diversità della vita culturale delle città europee, recensioni di eventi di alto profilo nella vita teatrale, concerti d'opera. In particolare, Vasiliev ha ascoltato l'esecuzione delle opere di Ciajkovskij sui palcoscenici europei, ha letto le traduzioni delle opere di grandi scrittori russi nella stampa locale e ha visitato una mostra di dipinti di artisti suoi compatrioti come Vereshchagin. Per descrivere ad esempio Firenze, Flerov narra: "Non crediate che l'epiteto città dei fiori rimandi a qualcosa di allegorico. Firenze è letteralmente inondata di fiori. Si vendono ovunque, a ogni piè sospinto, a ogni angolo, a ogni portone. La mattina non appena apro la finestra, ecco che scorgo dei fiori. Sulle enormi panche di marmo che costeggiano il Palazzo Strozzi (si trova proprio di fronte alle mie finestre) fanno bella mostra migliaia di fiori; intorno ad essi si accalca la folla, a mezzogiorno non è rimasto neanche un mazzolino (…) Si scrive e si legge, si fa colazione e si pranza sempre in mezzo ai fiori (…)" (Vasil'ev 1894: 324). Prima assai rara edizione, completa di tutte e 20 le tavole (una delle quali all'antiporta).
