From a total edition of 520 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 15 LARGE-PAPER COPIES PRINTED ON FINE LAID PAPER. Huge margins. Small 4to, attractively bound in recent yellow cloth with original wraps bound in. Front wrapper a little crinkled, chipped, and soiled. Rear wrapper a little soiled. Extreme edges of first few pages chipped and soiled. Otherwise fine and bright.

One copy of the extremely rare first issue, published by the University of Groningen as a doctoral thesis. All copies of this issue were retained by the author or exchanged by the university library. He had told him the other day that it was 'une belle question à traiter' and he was certain that the recipient would deal with it 'supérieurement'. Further to their agreement he is sending him 'la liste des personnes qui composent l'Ambassade' and he will be grateful to him for whatever he can do on their behalf. In a postscript he writes that at the moment of closing the letter he has just received one from the recipient announcing his marriage and he congratulates him on 'cette heureuse nouvelle'. 12 October [no year]. Very good.The Gate of Justice is the largest of the entrances into the castle of Alhambra. The Arabic name for the gate was long believed to refer to Islamic justice or law - charia. But in fact this was a misinterpretation for a similar-sounding word and it has been shown that the translation should be Gate of the Esplanade. Its multiple arches are decorated with the Hand of Fatima Mohammed's daughter and the key to the Islamic paradise as well as a Virgin and Child placed there by the Catholic Monarchs to consecrate the gate for Christianity.
