The other of Boyle shall be worked into 2nd Edition which Murray publisher is beginni9ng to be talking: he has already sold between 17 & 1800 copies: so let none say that the age of miracles is past I could have wished for a longer interval in order to read some subjects up rather closer. & finish off others. I have a floating notion a chateau en Espagne of doing an obra grande on 'Spain & Spaniards past & present' which should run 4 vols 8o. & be a library book at least in type & illustrations: for I have portfolios full of drawings made in interesting & seldom visited localities: all the pure Starkerec book ref route details etc would be left out & the spaces filled with efragion cosas de Espana from cigars to to Cervantes; this however is an ouvrage de logue haleine & probably will never be executed to the serious detriment of men who live word not deciphered. 18081609070023Madrid: La Imprenta Real 1808-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 146 p. 68 plates. Original sheep red spine label royal seal on title page. Wear and rubbing to boards some worming later paper label to tail of spine. Hinges cracking slightly marginal dampstain affecting a few plates. <br> This book was issued by the Bourbon Royal Press. It depicts infantry practice and maneuvers of a Napoleonic era army. The Treaty of Fontainebleau 1807 between Charles IV of Spain and Napoleon I of France concerned the occupation of Portugal. Charles IV hoped it would lead to an alliance between the French Empire as in pre-revolutionary times. However six months later Napoleon turned on his new ally. The Spanish Army was ill-equipped and lacked tactical training and this book was a last-ditch effort to improve the state of the Spanish army's training. Overall it was not a success as Napoleon ridiculed the Spanish army as "the worst in Europe" and the British forces who had to work with it agreed. Madrid: La Imprenta Real hardcover

20550123 Park Street Grosvenor Square London . 10 January 1855. Written on both sides of a 13 x 11 cm piece of paper. Cropped resulting in loss of text from both sides and with the front of the letter i.e. the side not bearing the signature bearing traces of glue from mount. Otherwise in fair condition lightly aged and worn. Ford begins by stating that Colville's 'letter of the 7th has been to Heavitree his country house near Exeter & back & only reached me this morning'. He continues by explaining that 'The Manzanilla is to be had at Gormans 16. Mark Lane & if you use my name you will be sure to be well served.' In the third edition of his 'Handbook for Travellers in Spain' published later in the year Ford would write: 'Excellent manzanilla is to be procured in London of Gorman 16 Mark Lane. Drink it ye dyspeptics!' The recto of the letter ends here but there is clearly text lacking as a result of the cropping as the letter continues on the reverse: '… day. But you will come & meet Keir – who is now in the North when I will put before you some real Montilla a Cordovese wine: the finest sherry is called Amontillado from its approach to its flavour Yours most truly Richd Ford'. 123 Park Street, Grosvenor Square [ London ]. 10 January 1855. unknown
