Rarissima. Taken from the very rare "Epitome De la Corographie d'Europe, illustre des pourtraitz des Villes plus renommees d'icelle" published by Arnoullet in 1553. The plate are copied form the Munster's Cosmographia and was reprinted by Dupinet (1564) and Belleforest (1575). Woodcut, good condition. Very rare.
A wide satirical etching, showing an allegory about the consequences of Palatine succession. Etching, signed in the cartouche by the engraver Nicolas Berey II: Par son tres humble et tres obeissant Serviteur Berey. At lower left we find again the engraver's signature and the imprint A Paris Chés le S.r Jaillot Géographe ordinaire du Roy sur le Quay et a coté des grands Augustins.A fine impression, of the first state of three, with contemporary outline colour, very good condition. Nautical chart of Europe, engraved by Claude Auguste Berey, whose signature appears both in the cartouche and in the lower left corner. The work is dedicated to Jérôme Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain (1674 - 1747), Secretary of State of the King and Secretary of State of the Navy from 6 September 1699 to 1 October 1715.On the death of Nicolas II, Alexis Hubert Jaillot took over as head of the printing house Berey. This skilled businessman was born around 1632 in Avignon-lès-Saint-Claude. Since childhood Jaillot had shown a good talent for art and drawing and had learned sculpture from his brother Pierre-Simón. During the Franco-Spanish conflict their hometown was devastated, and so the two brothers moved to Paris in 1657. There they soon acquired a certain reputation and the title of "Sculpteur du Roy". In 1665, Jaillot married with Jeanne Berey, daughter of Nicolas I Berey. Jaillot's fortune was to enter the cartographic market at a particularly favorable time. At the beginning of 1668, under Louis XIV, a particularly fruitful period began for France, as a consequence of the constant territorial expansion there was a great demand for maps that represented French conquests and new frontiers.Later, Jaillot joined forces with the sons of Nicolas Sanson, and was able to market new maps with the prestigious Sanson name. His Atlas of 1681, the "Atlas Nouveau", became such a commercial success that it was illegally copied by other publishers. Jaillot cannot be counted among the cartographers of the time such as the Sansons and Duval, but he was a skilled engraver who was able to intelligently exploit the resources he had inherited, making them wonderful works. His fame grew to the point that on 20 July 1686 he was named "Géographe du Roy" and was given a large annual pension; the title allowed him to defend himself against numerous counterfeiters. One of his most beautiful works was "Le Neptune François, or Atlas Nouveau des Cartes Marine". From the beginning of the eighteenth century its map production decreased: more and more updated maps were required which it was not able to offer; Jaillot (d. 1712) ceded, therefore, the company to his son Bernard Jean-Hyacinthe.Claude Auguste Berey (1651 - 1732) was a master calligrapher writer, engraver and dealer of French prints; second son of Nicolas I Berey and his second wife Marie Trémison and half-brother of Nicolas II Berey (1640 - 1667), he later worked for Alexis-Hubert Jaillot. Active between 1690 and 1730, Claude Auguste himself engraved several plates for "Le Neptune François, or Atlas Nouveau des Cartes Marine".Around 1697 he had a print shop in the rue Saint-Jacques, under the banner of the Princess of Savoy.Themap can be dated to 1699 - 1700, as soon as Phélypeaux was commissioned; some examples of the work show, in the lower left corner, the imprint: Se Vend a Paris chez Iaillot le fils sur le Quay de l'Orloge du Palais; these are the runs of Bernard Jean-Hyacinthe Jaillot. The map had a further reprint from Louis Denis's typography.B... S. Bifolco, "Mare Nostrum, Cartografia nautica a stampa del Mar Mediterraneo" (2020), pp. 248-249, tav. 115.

Decorative map of Russia by Ortelius. The cartographic source for this work, as declarated on the left cartouche, is Jenkinson's 1562 Russia map (Karrow 43/1, p. 318; Meurer p. 175-176). Anthony Jenkinson travelled in Russia in 1559, 1561, 1566 and 1567 and much was based on his own observations. Additionally, for the Eastern part of this map Jenkinson based himself on Herberstein, for the Western part on Wied. The vignettes include over a dozen indigenous and mythical scenes, costumed locals and animals. Map taken from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which is considered the first true modern "Atlas". The work was published in 7 languages and 36 editions, for which - in 1570 - Ortelius obtained the privilege, a kind of copyright that prevented other cartographers from publishing his works. The Theatrum represented the most advanced work of cartographic description. Ortelius collected in it the geographical and cartographic knowledge of his time, proposing in 147 spectacular engraved plates the most faithful image of the world then known and, in some extraordinary "historical maps", regions and routes taken from literature, mythology, tradition. Ortelius was also the first to cite sources, mentioning the names of cartographers in the "catalogus auctorum". From 1598 to 1612 the posthumous editions of the Theatrum were made by his collaborator Johannes Baptiste Vrients. Copper engraving, contemporary coloring, in good condition. Example printed in the 1603, Latin edition. Ort 162 (Koeman/Meurer: 46, Karrow: 1/66, vdKrogtAN: 1800:31).
Carta molto rara. Great map of the Mediterranean published in the Overton Atlas, printed for the first time in 1670. The map is inspired to the one of Guillelme Sanson. ,John Overton (1640-1713) was a capable publisher who started, in 1670, the revision and sell of maps coming from the production of William Smith, Blaeu, Janssonius, Sanson, Speed and many others. His atlas has been issued six times, every time enriched with new maps, until the final edition published by his son, Henry. Copperplate, contemporary colour, in excellent condition.

Coloritura coeva all'acquerello. Ottimo esemplare, conservato nel suo astuccio originale. Rara
8vo. Fair copy account, 223 pages in manuscript including title page, with 20 ephemeral papers and documents tipped-in at rear of volume, and 11 plant specimens mounted to separate cardstock leafs, captioned, and preserved in two folding envelopes also tipped-in (five were harvested in 1869 in Germany). Journal is written in German. Documents are in Italian or German, depending on place of origin. Burgundy cloth boards representative of the period, with four raised bands, marbled endpapers. Some wear to boards, fading at spine, otherwise in very good condition, a pleasing work in a fine hand. Wenzel Heger (1806-1895) was an architect residing in Josefstadt, a district within Vienna, active in his trade in the 1840s, and employed by the Austrian Department of Architecture by the 1860s. As one might expect from an esteemed architect, this manuscript is penned in a meticulous hand, a pleasing format with wide margins, the account unfolding chronologically and replete with detail. Heger and his wife indulge in an autumn sojourn, departing from their home in Vienna in August 1856 for Trieste, and from there to visit Venice, Padua, Verona, the Lago Di Garda, Peschiera, Brescia, Bergamo, Milan, Lago Maggiore, Como, Mals, and returning via the connecting alpine pass in Nauders, which lead to Austria, passing through the ancient fortress at Finstermünz (Altfinstermünz) which operated as a customs office until 1854. As well as describing nineteenth century Italian custom and the numerous sites visited, as he travels, Heger notes significant historical events, beginning with his first stay, in Venice, noting circumstances of the city having been plundered in 1797 by retreating Austrian and then French forces, and the Republic of Venice subsequently becoming a part of a unified Italy. He goes further back historically to discuss the visit of Tycho Brahe in 1575 who was soliciting Venetian artisans to work on the Danish king's palace. Early on in their travels, the couple crossed the border by rail into Croatia, then Slovenia to witness the natural and historic beauty of that South Slavic country. We find mention of Krapina and Warasdin (Varazdin), the iconic and majestic Terglau (Triglav) Mountain, Laibach and the ancient Roman castrum known as Colonie Aemona (Emona), Loitsch, Idra (Idrija), one of the many settlements called Paka, and Ogulin. The Baltic tour is described over 14 pages. The tour of mid-nineteenth century Austrian-ruled Italy is further memorialized with ephemeral and manuscript documents such as restaurant menus, hotel receipts including two illustrated billheads for the Grand Albergo alla Luna in Venice and the Gerardo Berina hotel's Trattoria restaurant which no longer stands, ferryboat, omnibus and gondola tickets, theater tickets and three theatre broadsides (one in Italian and one in German). Donizetti's "Elixir d'Amore" and Giacomo Meyerbeer's "Les Huguenots" at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice are featured. Finally, some botanical samples were collected by Heger and/or his wife at Lake Garda, Verona, Tirano, Padua, Monza, and much to the Austrian's delight, an edelweiss flower was harvested at an elevation of 7068 feet on Monte Pasubio (captioned Gnaphalium Leontopodium). Publications of the Modern Humanities Research Association; 3.4 x 11.2 x 8.6 Inches; 1000 pages; A landmark in the study of early modern Europe, this two-volume collection makes available for the first times a selection of the most important texts from court and civic festival books. Festival entertainments were presented to mark such occasions as royal and ducal entries to capital cities, dynastic marriages, the birth and christening of heirs, religious feasts and royal and ducal funerals. Europa Triumphans represents the chronological and trans-European range of the court and civic festival. These festivals are considered not simply as texts, but as events, and are introduced by groups of scholars, each with a specialist knowledge of the political, social and cultural significance of the festival and of the iconography, spectacle, music, dance, voice and gesture in which they were expressed. To demonstrate the geographic spread and political significance of festivals, and to illustrate the range of aesthetic languages they deploy, the festivals included in these two volumes are grouped in the following sections: Henri III; Genoa; Poland-Lithuania; The Netherlands; The Protestant Union; La Rochelle; Scandinavia; and The New World. These texts provide many valuable insights into the variety of political systems and historical circumstances that formed them. Beautifully produced with 148 black-and-white and 23 colour illustrations, Europa Triumphans represents an invaluable reference source for the study of early modern Europe. It presents texts both in transcription and translated into English, and is supplemented with introductory essays and commentaries.
Bibliografia: cfr. The publishing imprint "Chez Benoist" is not otherwise known, therefore, it is not possible to establish the place of printing: the indication Merchant d'Estampe sur le Port was used both in Marseille and than in Toulon. The box with the Noms de quelques Ports et Isles Situées entre le Meridien de Gibaltar et celuy de Cephalonie, a list of 49 islands in the western Mediterranean, is also unchanged. It is not clear whether this chart is an original work by Berthelot, or an authorized reprint that was sold "Chez Benoist" or, instead, a pirate edition.Bibliografia: cfr. The Turks formed the alliance with the Polish opposition forces of the Bar Confederation, while Russia was supported by Great Britain, who offered naval advisers to the Imperial Russian Navy. The Polish opposition was defeated by Aleksandr Suvorov. After that, he was transferred to the Turkish theatre of operations, where in 1773 and 1774 he won several minor and major battles for Russia following the previous successes of the Russian Field-Marshal Count Peter Rumiantsev at Larga and Kagul. Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717 - 1777) was a German engraver and map publisher. Lotter married Euphrosina Seutter (1709-1784), elder daughter of Matthäus Seutter. He began working at his is father-in-law's map business about 1740. Between 1740 and 1744 he produced, under Seutter's imprint, the Atlas minor, Praecipua orbis terrarum imperia, regna et provincias, Germania potissimum tabelli. By Pieter Goos, op ‘t Water, in de Vergulde Zee-Spiegel, by de Nieuwe-brugh. In the wake of Jeremias Wolff’s bigger view, this work presents many topographical references. Leopold was a modest engraver and publisher in Augsburg; the series of city views, from which this one is taken, has been published in a very limited circulation, which means these works are very rare. Copperplat, in excellent condition.

Map of Italy based on Il disegno della geografia moderna de tutta la provincia de la Italia, by Giacomo Gastaldi, published in 1561.Ortelius added some decorative elements, based on the works by Hans Vriedeman De Vries, Franz Floris and Benedetto Battini, all published between 1550 and 1560.Example from the 1592 Latin edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which is considered the first true modern "Atlas". Copper engraving, fine original colouring, in very good condition.
Lot of 6 issues of Germany's first published aviation magazine, Der Flieger, published by the founder Kurt Tucholsky during the Great War, these issues featuring flying aces such as the Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen and leading tactical pioneer of aerial formations Oswald Boelcke, and notable events taking place in the air and on the frontlines of the Great War. Octavo. Illustrated field newspapers, issues number 19, 22, 23, 34 from 1917, issue number 29 dated May 1918, and issue number 1 dated October 1918 Text is in German. Magazines vary slightly in size, the smallest measuring approximately 26 x 35 cm and the largest measuring approximately 27 x 38 cm. Some chips and small tear at extremities, otherwise in very good condition, nicely preserved. Der Flieger was published by Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935), who became one of the most important journalists of the Weimar Republic. Der Flieger was a field newspaper, now remembered as the oldest German aviation monthly periodical. From 1915 to 1917 Tucholsky served in the artillery flying school East I in Alt-Autz. From 26 November 1916 to November 1918 he published the field newspaper Der Flieger. Tucholsky was one of the most important journalists of the Weimar Republic Early issues of Der Flieger are exceedingly scarce. The present lot features Richthofen's 75th victory described by one of the very first men with whom Richthofen shared the details only two hours after the bold action, not long before he lost his own life in combat, an account of how in 1916 Oswald Boelcke earned the award "Pour le Mérite" along with Max Immelmann, an aviator's aerial view of Verdun shortly after the great battle of 1917, and more. Richthofen's 75th victory, a most notable attack which earned him a prestigious chivalry award, is recounted by one of the very first men who heard the details firsthand from the gallant aviator himself - only a couple of hours after the incident. Flying Ace Manfred von Richthofen, the famed Red Baron, is featured in the issue of 12 May 2018 with an article titled "Wie Richthofen seinen 75. abschoß [How Richthofen Shot Down his 75th." Richthofen had died in air combat only six weeks earlier on 21 April 1918, being the highest-scoring ace of the war, eventually being credited with 80 official victories. The account is written by a Lieutenant Lampel, who had only just met the famous ace for the first time on 2 April 1918. Only a couple of hours earlier Richthofen had claimed his 75th victory, by taking the lives of 19-year-old Second Lieutenant E.D. Jones and Second Lieutenant R.F. Newton. Flying ace Oswald Boelcke is featured with a portrait sketch on the front of the October 1918 issue, which is followed by an article describing the event that earned him the prestigious award "Pour le Mérite" being the second Great War aviator to receive the honor, immediately after and on the same day as Max Immelmann. Published for German aviators and frontline fighters alike, the issues center on matters timely and relevant to those who were directly involved in the monarch's scheme for economic and political domination of central Europe and the creation of a German colonial empire.
