Prep. by Aysenur Güler, Vita Susak. Edited by Nilüfer Sasmazer. Alexis Gritchenko, (1883-1977) was part of the modern art scene and exhibited with avant-garde artists including Kazimir Malevich, Wassily Kandinsky, Vladimir Tatlin and many others. Gritchenko was also an art critic and published articles, books; delivered public lectures, and taught in an art school. He decided to escape the civil war which followed the Russian Revolution of 1917. Leaving Moscow, he arrived in Istanbul in November 1919. Although the two years Gritchenko spent in Istanbul coincided with the occupation of the city, the Ottoman capital provided the artist with a relatively safe refuge until he left in 1921. On his arrival, he was instantly attracted by the colors and dynamism of Istanbul. He recorded his impressions of the vibrant ports, markets, sacred spaces, and majestic monuments while wandering through the streets, notepad, pen and brush in hand. Looking at his vast corpus of Istanbul works, one can retrace the cultural and social imprint of those turbulent years through the eyes of a visitor. Now, 100 years after the visit of Gritchenko to Istanbul, a great part of the works the artist created in the city, a collection of watercolors, gouaches, sketches, and oil paintings have been compiled into the book Alexis Gritchenko - The Constantinople Years. More than 150 works have been included in the publication alongside articles by art historians Vita Susak and Aysenur Gu?ler, detailing the artist's life and technique, as well as the connections and friendships he formed during his stay in Istanbul, including those between him, Ibrahim Çalli, and Namik Ismail.

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (32 x 23 cm). In English. Color ills. 397 p. Splendor & pageantry. Textile treasures from the Armenian Orthodox Churches of Istanbul. "This collection of textile treasures of the Armenian Churches of Istanbul is being introduced to world textile historians and art lovers for the very first time. Like the items the book introduces, the book too is a treasure, not only for textile historians, but anyone cultivating an interest in the culture, art and religious forms of Anatolia and Anatolian Armenians. Over 170 plates illustrate the textile treasury of the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul that have been executed in embroidery, appliqué, techniques of textile printing, and painting. We are amazed by the love, devotion and unique experiences that women artisans stitched into these pieces, while a closer look leads us to understand that their artistic visions were rooted in, and developed out of, Eastern traditions. The book also provides a brief historical background of the Istanbul Patriarchate and its Istanbul churches, discusses the iconographies of the objects and describes their techniques of production. The reference catalogue is highly useful as a reference for scholars, while the translations of the inscriptions on the pieces open a window to all readers onto the personal lives of the people who contracted and gifted these items to the Church."

Preposterous paradoxes of Ambassador Morgenthau: A factual story about politics, propaganda and distortions. "Aya has done a service to our understanding of history with his analysis of Ambassador Morgenthau's reports on the Armenian question in the Ottoman Empire. Morgenthau has long held a prominent place in what has become the popularly accepted history of the events of World War I. His descriptions of Armenian suffering feature genocide. The difficulty, as demostrated by Aya, is that Morgenthau readily accepted fabricated evidence and himself falsified the record..." (Justin MCCarthy).
