1886031107Roma: Tipografia Editrice 1886. Tipografia Editrice unknown

Bound into grey and black patterned boards with tan spine labels with gilt lettering. Band 1 dated 1835 band 2 dated 1836. Scuffing and some bumping to edges and joints of the boards. Bindings remains firm. Internally in nice condition. A controversial Hegelian inspired work on the historical origins of Christianity which met immediate backlash upon publication by both the orthodox as well as more rational. "Strauss maintained with unyielding vigor the theory which has no basis in fact that the Christ of the Gospels excepting the barest scraps of personal history was the unintentional creation of the early Christian Messianic expectations. The miracles to which he applied the severest and narrowest criteria were thus largely dismissed as fiction and his view of the relation of the human to the divine was jejune." PMM 300.
