1881541266Dresden 1881. Fine. Holograph Letter. In German. Octavo. 4pp. together with the holograph mailing envelope by Cosima postmarked Dresden 13 September 1881. In fine condition. From Cosima Wagner the daughter of Franz Liszt who later became the second wife of Richard Wagner and after his death the director of the Bayreuth Festival for 31 years. Written to her daughter Daniela von Bülow discussing Wagner and music performances she attended:

“…Hopefully Darling by the time these lines will reach you we will be with you within a few hours; but I can only say hopefully as Dr. J today discovered 2 beginning abscesses on Papa which he wants to lance … Today I went to the porcelain collection an hour which I limited to China . Then we met as planned with Papa at the Sixtina … we came to Canaletto which Papa also liked a lot. Then we went to Dr. J … .†She also discusses performances of Weber Beethoven and Mozart: “This evening the Msinger Meistersinger is not taking place but instead Freischeutz. The music for Preciosa made a most lovely impression on me. Fioi was in the catholic church today and listened to a mass by Beeth. Beethoven and the Ave Verum of Mozart; because of Figaro I was tired of old-fashioned music for a while! Oh the endings! My ear is almost as sore as my mouth. Also . I found it quite annoying that the count who is mean and is being made fun of sings a pompous and serious aria. And yet the work also contains the most beautiful and eternal characteristics of Mozart’s genius! In the Preciosa I heard only Bernag’s declamation … Jews everywhere! And it seems to me that the piece is lovable and could be played well . â€

A scarce surviving letter historically important and rich in content. unknown
1910176970New York: Doubleday Page & Co. 1910. England's leading illustrator First US trade edition first published as a signed limited edition in Britain earlier the same year. The British and US trade editions are identical other than the colour of the bindings. "Before portraying Wagner's "Ring" Arthur Rackham 1867-1939 had become England's leading illustrator through his interpretations of fantastic books: Grimm's Fairy Tales Rip van Winkle Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and A Midsummer-Night's Dream. With his insight into elves twisted oaks and bearded heroes Wagner was the logical step: with the "Ring" Rackham brought his talent for ethereal watercolor and line into new realms of adult mythology" Spero. Quarto. Tipped-in frontispiece 33 plates all in colour with printed tissue-guards. Original blue cloth titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover in gilt pictorial endpapers. With dust jacket. Housed in the publisher's illustrated box. Extremities lightly rubbed a little toning to contents hinges split but stable; a few chips and closed tears to jacket: a very good copy. First editions thus of these catalogues and exceedingly rare complete salesman sample kit for the Wagner Manufacturing garage door hardware in the 1920s. After World War I the explosion and popularity of automobile ownership in the United States created a desperate need to house these often cantankerous and essential machines for homes businesses and commercial fleets. By quickly adapting their hardware sets for elevator doors first introduced before World War I Wagner was able to quickly capitalize on the market growth and need for door hardware to retrofit existing garages as well as new construction. Often coupled with doors produced by Johnson Fimbel Hartford Barber-Colman Overhead and Crawford the Wagner hardware sets proved durable and popular. In addition this sample kit features the specialized steel stud brackets developed by Wagner to help brace garages and sheds adapted for garage doors to hold automobiles as the weight of the doors could damage existing construction as Americans were interested in rolling doors and sectional garage doors rather than traditional swing-out barn-type doors. Wagner 1871-1937 originally founded his company in Cedar Falls IA in 1904 to manufacture children’s sleds coaster wagons and hay rack fixtures with a variety of door hardware. They merge with Star Elevator Doors before World War I and later with Boardman Elevator Control of Chicago with primary customers as Otis Elevator and Westinghouse. In 1934 Wagner began producing the iconic Wagner Overhead Garage Door and by the 1950s had become one of the largest garage door manufacturers in the country. Worldcat locates 1 copy of No. 25 Harvard; and 1 of Wagner-Star Elevator Door Cat Univ. of Kansas; no copies of the other catalogues or examples of the Salesman Sample Model in case.
