1945615432Florida 1945. Unbound. Very Good. A collection of 60 letters from an engineer with the Army Air Corps during World War II to his family between 1942 and 1945. All items very good or better with tears from opening. Additionally included are four campaign ribbons a medal a patch and 12 sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring 3" x 4" and 3½" x 5½" with captions on the verso.

A collection of letters from Massachusetts’s native John G. Holland to his friends and family while serving with the Army Air Corps and later Navy during World War II. At 42 Holland was an older recruit and had served in World War I. He was sent to the Army Air Force Replacement Training Center in Miami Florida to train as an engineer. In one letter from August 1942 he writes “I am doing pretty good physically considering my age…only got 14 cards to remind me of it.†His schooling includes aircraft fundamentals elementary electric micrometers among other classes which he discusses with his family. His age comes up a few times with one superior asking ‘how the hell he got in here anyway.†In response Holland writes “I told him I had been 6 mo trying to answer that one.†Although it seems he may be eligible for discharge because he’s older that never happens and he stays in the military until the end of 1945.

From Miami he goes to New Orleans Brooklyn and finally Stockton California where he stays until the end of the ear. Here he is promoted to Chief Engineer and works on a Navy patrol boat off the coast of California. In late 1944 he writes “Since July 19th we have covers 6791 nautical miles and you can readily see that I have no time for anything much except eat and sleep.†Another letter reads “I was busy all week clearing those two new boats when I wasn’t teaching chemical warfare.†He’s often asked what he will do after the war to which he answered “I am not thinking of Post War projects as yet got ll I can do to swing the works the way things are…As you know things are terrific out here. They want help but don’t pay no wages. Also can’t find places to house those they have. So post war don’t mean a thing to us.†Holland was honorably discharged after the war and moved to Arkansas where he became a shoe manufacturer.

An interesting archive documenting an older soldier’s tour of duty during World War II. unknown

This new edition of the Rgveda the oldest Indian text in archaic Sanskrit is the first to present the text in Roman characters in its original metrical arrangement and in a form that most closely approximates the pronunciation of the time of its composition. Nevertheless as all the restorations deviating from the received traditional Samhita text are printed in italics the traditional text can easily be reconstituted without reference to other editions. This had been sought for over a hundred years yet a systematic restoration of the whole text has never before been attempted. Added is a study of the meters found in the text their patterns and anomalies and an appendix with a detailed discussion of each metrically problematic line. ; Harvard Oriental Vol 5; 177.8 X 44.45 X 254 millimeters; 700 pages .
