His controversial book created a rather tempered chain reaction, first with the publication of "Bedenkingen van een' jong' soldaat, tegen eenige der denkbeelden van een' oud' soldaat (.)" Amersfoort, 1843). When also the pamphlet "Vlugtige bedenkingen tegen de denkbeelden van een oud soldaat (.)" appeared shortly thereafter, Stieltjes was quick to respond and his publisher issued in haste the publication "Nadere ontwikkeling (.)" (Nijmegen 1843). A few years later Stieltjes wrote in length his "Is Nederland nog te verdedigen? Toestemmend beantwoord door den schrijver der denkbeelden van een oud - soldaat (.)" (Nijmegen, 1849), to be followed by "'Hoe Nederland te verdedigen is. In ruwe trekken aangeduid, door een Oud-Soldaat" (Nijmegen, 1853). See also: W. J. Knoop in "De Gids", 14th year, 1949-50.

Harskamp: "A Colonial Obsession: Dutch Narrative Literature on the East Indies 1800 - 1945. A Catalogue of Holdings in the British Library". The finely drawn map is entitled "Schetskaart van de Reede van Atjeh, door de Luitenants t/z. J.M.H. Bervoets en C.H. de Goeje, Februari 1873". It incorporates an inset "Figurative Schetsteekening der Hoofd Afdeeling Atjeh". The last page in the book is a Publisher's advertisement for "Open brieven aan den heer G. F. W. Borel", originally published a year earlier in Samarang, republished by Baier and offered in Holland by De Bussy. The original Samarang, 1879 edition is also being offered by Librarium of The Hague.
