173542612Dublin: Printed by and for Samuel Fuller at the Globe in Meath-Street 1735. Printed on recto of a single sheet. 1 vols. 15 x 9-1/2 inches. Extensively repaired loss of a few letters at fold. Matted. Printed on recto of a single sheet. 1 vols. 15 x 9-1/2 inches. Althought the temperance movement in Ireland and the United States is usually associated with the nineteenth century it is clear from this passionate 1735 Dublin broadside that the movement had it early advocates. Bristol and ESTC record a presumed Philadelphia printing of this same broadside which was found bound in the New York Historical Society's copy of Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette for 1735-6 -- but ESTC does not record this Dublin printing of 1735. Fine condition. Original oil painting on canvas unsigned with caricatures of Asquith John Redmond and Lloyd George 19 1/2 x 30 inches framed in gilt to 22 1/2 x 32 1/2 inches overall. 1 vols. British Political Caricatures in Oil. A British political comment on the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. Amid celestial clouds a Union Jack-garbed figure of H.H. Asquith turns a grindstone on which a gleeful John Redmond in satanic wings sharpens a sword lettered "HOME RULE" as an angelic David Lloyd George flies away carrying by the coattails a small Irishman shillelagh in hand.

Prime Minister Asquith introduced the Third Home Rule for Ireland Bill to the Commons in 1912 in part to oblige the Irish on which his Liberal ministry depended. Redmond leader of the Irish Nationalists established a balance of power favorable to the Irish and passage of the bill seemed assured. Lloyd George then Chancellor of the Exchequer aware of the heavily pro-English sentiment of Northern Ireland and of the political dangers of forcing unwilling Protestants under Catholic rule induced the parties to exempt Ulster from the provisions of the bill which finally passed in this form.

This painting reflects the situation in early 1914: Redmond with the aid of Asquith prepares to sever Ireland from the mother country while Lloyd George symbolically carries the pugnacious Catholic faithful away from the Protestant sanctuary of the North. It is possibly the original of a Conservative Party political poster.

A UNIQUE PIECE OF POLITICAL PROPAGANDA IN THE HIGHLY UNUSUAL MEDIUM OF OILS. Small signs of age and wear to the binding including slight crackling and nicks to the spine folding map with faint dampstain to tail margin two negligible ink spots to blank area on the map of the Irish Sea but A VERY APPEALING COPY quite clean and remarkably fresh internally and in an entirely solid period binding.

This is the second corrected edition of the first comprehensive road atlas of Ireland offered here in especially attractive condition. In response to increasing demand for accurate maps of the country's road system the Irish House of Commons commissioned George Taylor and Andrew Skinner who together had previously produced the first road atlas of Scotland among other works to undertake a survey of the land. Taylor and Skinner completed their work in 1777 and published the first edition of their findings in 1778. This second edition includes updates to the year 1783 as well as an additional map no. 289. Renowned for their precision and detail Taylor and Skinner's maps clearly show roads crossroads and bridges as well as topographical features such as hills lakes and rivers including the direction of the water flow; landmarks such as castles churches and ruins; and the names of local landlords and their homes. The maps appear either as half-page strips or in full-page and the distances are given in both Irish and English miles 11 Irish miles being equal to 14 British miles. The robust list of subscribers which includes a number of earls viscounts lords bishops and British and Irish army men demonstrates the great need for and widespread success of this important work. Our former owner may well be the famed and controversial naturalist Joseph Sabine 1770-1837 who often signed his name as "Jos. Sabine" as seen here. He certainly had good reason to own maps of Ireland. He was from an Anglo-Irish family himself and was Honorary Secretary of the Horticultural Society a position which at the time carried great clout in the botanical community and one that presupposed knowledge of geography across the realm. DNB tells us that "Sabine played a leading part in the establishment of the society's garden first at Hammersmith and afterwards at Chiswick; in sending out David Douglas and others as collectors; in starting local societies in connection with the Horticultural Society; and in growing and distributing new and improved varieties of flowers fruits and vegetables throughout the country." While not a rare book this is the kind of volume that would have normally encountered frequent and inevitably damaging use so to find a copy as well preserved as this one is a lucky occurrence. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY, WITH TWO UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT LETTERS CITED IN THE STANDARD OLYMPIA PRESS BIBLIOGRAPHY. One of 2,000 copies of the first British edition. (Actually this "British edition" was created by taking 2,000 copies of the first American (Grove Press) edition to England, putting a sticker over the imprint, and issuing a new dustjacket.) LAID IN ARE TWO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TYPED LETTERS SIGNED--ABOUT 1,000 WORDS--FROM THE EDITOR, SINGLETON-GATES, on his letterhead, to a correspondent in Nothern Rhodesia (later Zambia) (!). In these unpublished letters, written during the 1960s, Singleton-Gates describes his feelings towards Casement. He also describes, in passionate terms, the fascinating circumstances surrounding the publication of these scandalous diaries, and the numerous obstacles he faced, including copyright and censorship issues. He furthermore explains his various other projects relating to Casement, none of which came to fruition. It is fair to say that these letters shed considerable light on the limits of press freedoms in Britain during the late 50s and 60s, as well as on the way Casement's heirs felt about his legacy. THESE LETTERS ARE CITED--and briefly excerpted--on pp. 60-61 of Patrick Kearney's bibliography, The Paris Olympia Press (Liverpool, Liverpool University Press, 2007). Also laid in are numerous newspaper clippings from 1959 and 1960, all relating to the publication. 4to. Publisher's cloth. Fine and bright, in a very good price-clipped dj.

Ids A series of legal pamphlets both criminal and administrative pertaining to Ireland in 1832. The era of the Irish Reform Act 1832 an Act of Parliament that introduced wide-ranging changes to the election laws of Ireland. Note - v1. - The Duke had been since 1817 Grand Master of the Irish Orangemen and he was accused of making use of this position to pose as the defender of Protestantism and to tamper with the loyalty of the Army. These accusations were only set at rest by the Duke's categorical denial and by the assistance he rendered in suppressing the whole of the Orange Societies at the request of the government. DNB. Joseph Phillips a radical and supporter of the 1832 Reform Bill took the opportunity of the Duke's unsuitable opposition to the same bill to publish an attack that included the accusation that the Duke was responsible for the death of his servant Sellis. For this Phillips was jailed. London & Dublin. 1832-1833 hardcover

Rome also opened Britain to the intellectual and religious diversity of the empire. Yet there is plentiful evidence in both the literary record and the ever-increasing archaeological material to show that Britain -- a late-comer to Romes empire -- often resisted external influence and imbued imported Roman ways with native characteristics. This text seeks to introduce the history of Romes involvement with Britain in a succinct but readable way providing an overview of the countrys already diverse culture before the advent of the legions; tracing the historical development of the province under Rome and how the Romans maintained their hold on it; and tackling topics such as administration development of towns and the countryside religion and art. The aim of the book is not simply to supply information but to invite the reader to ask questions and delve deeper into Romes most northerly province. -- with a bonus offer-- .
