Incisione in rame, buone condizioni. Rara. A panorama of the City of London viewed from the South Bank. Jonathan Potter writes: “An artistically licensed, vertically exaggerated prospect of London from the south that emphasizes the city’s skyline, dominated by the numerous church spires and the vast dome of St. Paul ’s. Elegantly engraved the view is annotated with 52 buildings identified in the keys in both Latin and German with The Swan and The Globe among those buildings named on the Southbank. The arms of the city sit boldly at the front of the design surrounded by banners and trading wares.” Drawn by Friedrich Berhard Werner engraved by Johann Georg Ringle and published by Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756). Copperplate, good condition. Rare.

William Ellis (c.1700?1758), agriculturist and writer. After a short period in the brewing industry, Ellis bought Church Farm at Little Gaddesden, near Hemel Hamstead, Hertfordshire, were he combined the practice of farming with his passion for writing on the subject. His writings were far more successful than his farming activities and his early books were very well received and "farmers in all parts of the country asked him to visit and report on their farms. He travelled over the country giving advice and observing different farming methods... Many farmers visited Ellis's farm at Little Gaddesden, but they found that he did not practise what he advocated in print, that his implements were old-fashioned, and that his land was neglected and in bad condition." (ODNB). Provenance: Small neat ink stamp of the Lawes Agricultural Library to the title of the first 2 volumes. Fussell II, p. 7; Perkins 561 (the London edition of 1744); Aslin, p.43.

Sexual abuse of a nine year old girl by an Irish priest. The second part of the pamphlet contains "a very foul case" of sexual abuse of a nine year girl by an Irish Catholic priest of the name of Dowdel. The girl, named Bishop, swore in court that the previous August she used to visit Dowdel, then a prisoner in the Gate-house where she had first made his acquaintance when her mother was also a prisoner there. According to her testimony: "he used to kiss her, to take her upon his knee, and to give her sugared beer, some time put his tongue into her mouth, and his hands up her coats; that he hurt her once with his finger, which made her cry; and then to please her, gave her two groats: and that a week after he took her in like manner upon his knee, and after he had kissed her a while, he threw her upon his bed (having made his Door fast with a stick) fell upon her, pull'd up her Coats, and hurt her with something..." When the matter came out the girl's father, being drunk, told Dowdel that for forty pounds he could see to it that everything would be hushed up. Dowdel thought forty pounds too much and offered ten. At his trial Dowdel shamelessly confessed his misdemeanour with a frankness which later earned some leniency from the court. He speaks in what appears to be the writer's attempt to imitate his Irish accent. "Being asked if he would challenge any of the jury, he answered like an Irish St. Omer, Me like dem well, they be all honest men. Being asked, if he used to kiss the Girl and set her upon his knee ; he answered Yes my Lor the chile be so pretty and do twenty pretty tings make me laugh a hundred times. Being asked if he ever gave her money, he said, My Lord that be my Charitee, when her Mother bee in Prison, I tooke her to eat half my dinner, and I say this bee pretty Shile, I had love for the Shile and gave her any ting I had : she used to come often for my Charitee. But amongst the rest of his discourse he owned the matter in effect in these words, which happened about entering her body, he said, Me enter her dis far, pointing his finger to the Court." Leopold was a modest engraver and publisher in Augsburg; the series of city views, from which this one is taken, has been published in a very limited circulation, which means these works are very rare. A finely-engraved view of pre-fire London seen from the south side of the Thames with fashionably dressed figures promenading in the foreground. With descriptions below in both German and Latin separated by the coat of arms of London. Joseph Friedrich Leopold (1668-1726) was an engraver in Augsburg, taking over the publishing firm of J.U. Kraus in 1719. His son, Johann Christian Leopold (1699 - 1755), succeeded him. Copperplate, in excellent condition.

As usual the engraved titles with a bit more of the spotting. Generally a very clean and handsome set in unusually nice condition. AN ESPECIALLY BEAUTIFUL WORK FILLED WITH PICTURESQUE STEEL ENGRAVED SCENES OF IRELAND. William Bartlett traveled extensively throughout Europe and the East with his good friend Dr. Beattie and brought home over a thousand drawings. Eventually they were engraved and published into volumes with descriptive text. Here we find one of one of Bartlett's best works partly attributable to the magnificent scenery of the country described. Each engraving combines attention to detail subtle use of lighting and shade and romantic portrayal of the landscape. Scenes are rendered from virtually every corner of the country and include both natural and architectural compositions.
The text focuses heavily on the history of each locale but also includes local customs sights and first hand travel impressions. A somewhat elusive title in the Bartlett oeuvre these illustrations of Ireland are typical of his best and most famous work. George Virtue hardcover

Atherton was born 1598 in Somerset and attended Oxford. He was appointed in 1630 as Lord Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. In 1640 he was accused of engaging in "buggery" with his steward John Childe and the two were hanged in December of 1640. According to Rictor Norton's "Homosexuality in Eighteenth-Century England: A Sourcebook" they were the second such pair to have been hanged as a couple in England. This work while not dealing directly with the accusations or the trial is a contemporary account of the bishop's final days. It includes Atherton's letter to his wife and a sermon preached at his burial. In 1710 the author Bernard published another book in which he exposed several legal proceedings and conflicts between Atherton and Catholic lawyers which may have led to a conspiracy to remove him. The father recorded many local traditions which he accepted as true including those concocted for his benefit according to Sidney Lee by John Jordan a Stratford poet who was his chief guide throughout his visit. ------------ In his pursuit of information about Shakespeare Ireland learned from some of the oldest inhabitants that manuscripts had been moved from Shakespeare's residence at New Place to Clopton House at the time of the Stratford fire. To Clopton House he went where he learned from the tenant that the manuscripts he was seeking had been destroyed only a week before. His disappointment was extreme. 'My God! Sir you are not aware of the loss which the world has sustained. Would to heaven I had arrived sooner!' ------Today he is best remembered today as the chief victim of the Ireland Shakespeare forgeries created by his son William Henry Ireland. But alas that is a tale for another day. ----------- Ref English Short Title Catalog t79991; Abbey Scenery 427. Cox III182. 186735425New York: T.H. Morrell 1867. Very Good. One of 60 copies of the quarto edition. According to penciled notes on the free front endpaper of Volume I this was the publisher's own copy with occasional annotations throughout by the author. There are also two letters tipped in from the author to the publisher at page 100 of Volume I.

This is a monumental history of New York City theatre by Joseph Ireland 1817-1898. Joseph Norton Ireland one of the major early historians of the American theater entered his father's business after graduating from high school in his native New York. Leaving the company in 1855 and retiring to Bridgeport Connecticut Ireland devoted the rest of his life to studying and writing about the stage. His history is organized chronologically by theatre season and then by theatre. It compiles a prodigious amount of information about every performance at the major New York theatres its dates and its cast. He writes about how well the performances and the actors and actresses were received. In addition Ireland offers detailed personal and professional information about the performers and other important theatrical figures of the time. His comments are entertaining as well as enlightening. He also provides interesting details about the exterior and interior appearance of the important theatres of the time. Ireland's occasional annotations to the text in Morrell's copies appear to be to update information about various performers for later editions of the book. Many are about the deaths of actors that occurred after the book was published. Others offer a more detailed biography news of a marital separation or a date correction.

Bound by Oldach & Co. in brown leather with spine with raised bands and gilt titling.
