Mary Lee Davis arrived in Fairbanks in 1917 on the steamer Alaska because her husband John had been assigned by the U.S. Geological Survey to create a mine experiment station in Fairbanks. Mary Davis purchased the famed arts & crafts bungalow built by Lucille McCarthy now known as the Mary Lee Davis House. The letter laid into this presentation copy outlines her unhappiness with being posted back to Washington D.C. by the U.S. Government as well as her struggles in writing the memoir.
