1900569Boston 1900. Very good. 4pp. on a bifolium. Quarto. Previously folded. Light wear along old folds and a couple of short closed tears at lower edge. Rare illustrated prospectus for the potentially fraudulent Bernalillo Oil Company based in Boston and San Diego at the turn of the 20th century. The text promises astounding returns stating that "Few in the East appreciate the stupendous nature of this great industrial awakening and the unparalleled opportunity it affords for large profits on even limited investments." The promoters further advise readers to send away for more complete information about the company's holdings and business plans and provides a list of references to contact for confirmation of their bona fides. Strangely despite its extensive endorsement of the oil industry in California the land it advertises is 6400 acres in New Mexico between Fort Wingate and the Navajo Reservation as is the town of Bernalillo. A 1905 article in the business periodical United States Investor cast serious doubt on the venture writing in response to a query about the trustworthiness of the company that "The stocks have no market value and intrinsically they are not believed to be worth more than the paper they are printed on." We locate only one copy at Yale. unknown books

The last leaf provides a summary of ways to arrive on the West Coast via the Salt Lake Route through Las Vegas from Chicago Minneapolis and Denver and prints a full-page map of the route and intermediate stops across Utah Southern Nevada and Southern California. The Salt Lake Route was operated by the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad whose line between the two cities was completed in 1905 under the ownership and direction of Montana mining baron William A. Clark and as a result it was also known informally as the "Clark Road." [8], 9-304 pp. All seven black and white plates present. Publisher's maroon cloth illustrated on front and backstrip. Higgins [1834-1917] was Speaker of the British Columbia Legislature. "I have adhered as closely as possible to descriptions of the peculiarities of speech and mode of life of the men and women who peopled the Pacific Coast forty or fifty years ago. The stories of the occult, which comprise several chapters, are left to the judgement of wiser heads than mine. I have seen much that puzzled and mystified me, and I am still seeking light, thus far with indifferent success. The reminiscent stories are all founded upon actual occurrences, and in the years to come may be found of value to the student of early events in California and the British Pacific. I have aimed to write history, so far as it came under my own observation, in an entertaining manner." - Preface. Unmarked with average wear. Binding intact. Front hinge starting. 51-1295Late 19th Century-Early 20th Century. Silver print. Panorama. 8 x 42 inches. Provenance: Peter Howard Berkeley. "The well known 'Raymond' granite quarries near Raymond in Madera County not only are and have been for a number of years the most important mineral industry of the county but they are also an important factor in the state's production. As has already been noted… these deposits of workable building stone are located in the western edge of the Sierra foothills. There are two quarries about 1 mile apart circa 1914 on the east side of a small valley about 2 miles east of Raymond which is the terminus of the Berenda-Raymond branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Both quarries are served by spur tracks from this branch line. It is now recognized that this stone is not excelled by any other building granite found either in this state or elsewhere. It is noted for its beautiful white color the fineness and uniformity of its texture its weathering qualities and its freeness in working. As to this last named feature it lends itself readily to all classes of fine structural carving."1998 Observer:"Raymond is an interesting little place. It used to be a large bustling town in the late 1800s because a railroad spur was built to it and stage coaches were used to carry passengers to Yosemite. Later another railroad track was built in from Merced in 1907 and Raymond lost all of the tourist business to Yosemite. Of all the buildings built then only a few are left; and everything built for the railroad is gone except for a monument across the street from the store about the Wild Cat Station Raymond CA. There is another monument in front of Hills Pride Inn about the town of Knowles. Luckily for Raymond someone had discovered the granite nearby in 1886 so the granite business helped keep Raymond alive - only the town didn’t flourish as much as during the Yosemite times." Late 19th Century-Early 20th Century. unknown
