This mid-century piece opens to a map of Tulare County which is accompanied by a lengthy index. Published on the eve of World War II this map precedes the establishment of Rankin Field near Tulare where more than 10000 pilots received training including twelve future Aces and two Medal of Honor Recipients. First edition of this exceedingly scarce promotional catalogue from Art Sparks whose introduction details the efforts to radically compete with the new-found supremacy of the Lotus-Ford race cars and in conjunction with Douglas Aircraft and Sparks engines design a competitive car. In 1966 the USAC regulations required Indianapolis race cars to feature open-wheel design with maximum width of 75 in. and minimum wheelbase of 96 in. and 4.2 litre engines with 2.8 litre superchargers. The legendary innovator applied his famed ForgedTrue pistons which when used in other engines powered 11 consecutive Indianapolis 500 race winners. Sparks 1901-1987 was a pioneering silent movie and talkie professional driver stuntman including Howard Hughes’ epic Hells Angels raced on outlaw dirt tracks and began competing with Stubby Stubblefield Bill Cummins and Rex Mays on West Coast Tracks. He designed Stubby’s “The Catfish†aerodynamic race car which placed 6th in the 1932 Indy 500 and later began working with Thorne Engineering to develop George Robson’s 1946 Indy 500 winner. First edition thus of this very scarce original Doble Steam Motors Co. dealer’s brochure for the Doble Steam Motor car line-up which featured a 7-passenger Limousine 5-passenger De Luxe Phaeton Phaeton and De Luxe runabout with a rumble seat. These Doble cars were considered amongst the best steamer cars ever made and incorporated a number of large expensive and sophisticated coachwork and amenities which competed with the best gasoline engine cars. The Doble Model E could drive within one minute of turning the switch fitted with a flash boiler a 4-cylinder engine rated at 75 horsepower and an efficient condenser allowing a range of up to 1500 miles on 24 gallons of water with no trace of steam around the Car. First introduced at the 1923 San Francisco Auto Show with coachwork by Walter Murphy of Pasadena the car sported a 100000 mile warranty or three years and was included as the final page of each catalogue. Unfortunately due to Abner’s poor business practices stock manipulation and speculation the company only produced maybe 125 cars and closed down in 1931. This 3-wheeled streamline car was conceived during the oil embargo by Dale Clifft in his garage using a 305cc Honda Super Hawk engine forks & brakes from another motorcycle and Naugahyde interior licensed as a “motorcycle†and promoted by the creative Geraldine Carmichael a.k.a. Jerry Dean Michael a transgender con artist and star of “Unsolved Mysteries.†The Dale was reputed to get 70 mpg absorb more impact than a Cadillac without damage and bullet-proof windows with the production models supposedly powered by an 850cc BMW motorcycle engine. The showroom prototype was roped off from potential clients because the wheels were nailed on and the whole scam came apart when The California Corporation Commission began investigating a stock run-up and Car & Driver exposed it as a “scam†with a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower motor. Three Dales -- apparently the only ones ever made -- survive today with one in the Smith Collection Museum of American Speed another in the Petersen in Los Angeles and the third privately owned. Encouraged by the Civil Aeronautics Authority in 1938 many communities began preparing aviation master plans in order to begin building enough airports and facilities to encourage further expansion of civil aviation. This master plan incorporated many of the airports already operating in Los Angeles and their possibilities for expansion including Los Angeles Union Air Long Beach Santa Monica Lancaster and others. These magazines include many illustrations and ads for San Diego CA businesses and a number of articles touching on the PBY-1 Catalina aircraft which was one of the most successful flying boats. Of particular interest are the articles detailing the squadron of PBY-1 Catalinas flown by Patrol Squadron 11-F from the Naval Air Station in San Diego on a shakedown flight to Hawaii and then back. The PBY Catalinas proved to be incredibly successful aircraft including long “wet†wings waist gun positions during World War II and very popular with British and Canadian flight crews. They overhauled the engines for Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra and during World War II part of the facility served as an assembly center for the illegal forced relocation and internment of Japanese-Americans in Southern California. Founded in 1925 by Harris Hanshue after “Pop†Hanshue won the contract to provide airmail service between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City and then the routes from Los Angeles to San Francisco as well as the Cheyenne Denver Colorado Springs and Pueblo CO route. By 1929 Western Air Express was flying Fokker F.10 Tri-Motor passenger aircraft which carried 12 passengers in addition to the mail. This deluxe service included limousine transportation between airports and business centers lunch served in flight and nicely appointed passenger cabins. The ink signature of B.A. Cecil Stephens a member of the Historical Society of Southern California in the 1890s as well as a principal in a syndicate interested in water flow in the lower Colorado River appears along the top edge of the front panel. Some minor toning and wear along the extremities of the wrappers with a stain to the rear panel; else very good. Barrett 1305 and 1306 although neither is this issue with the "Francis Valentine & Co. Printers San Francisco Cal." imprint at the bottom of the front panel.<br /> <br /> Extols the virtues of Baja California for agriculture mining and manufacturing. Includes statements from persons who have been on the company lands conditions prices and other information for colonists. Barrett 1306.<br /> <br /> Promotional piece encouraging emigration to Baja California with descriptions of the agricultural opportunities and the city of Ensenada. George H. Sisson was an American mining engineer and entrepreneur who purchased a large land concession in Baja California on July 24 1884 with Luis Huller. This concession extended between 29 degrees north and 32 degrees 42 minutes north and included Cedros Island. Additional purchases extended their holdings to 13325630 acres. In 1885 Sisson and Huller formed the International Company of Mexico in Hartford Connecticut with Sisson as general manager. The business was sold to the British Mexican Land and Colonization Company in 1888. These land holdings were emblematic of the problems in land distribution during the Portiriato 1876-1911; related lawsuits continued for years afterward. unknown

This very scarce panoramic photo provides an excellent historical snapshot of the heyday of Standard Oil Company semi-pro baseball teams in California. Of particular note in this photograph is the presence of the RPM Motor Oil baseball team because 1936 was the year that Standard Oil introduced the brand. To offset the dramatic drop in earnings during the Great Depression Standard Oil pushed heavily researched new products including RPM Motor Oil Standard Gasoline DELO Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil and others. Standard Oil and other large oil companies promoted company-sponsored baseball teams as diversions for oil families to entertain themselves and to incorporate the values of aggressiveness and toughness symbolized by the oil roughnecks. In this photo the RPM team is fielding 15 players in uniform while the opponents Standard Oil are fielding 13 players including one in catcher’s gear.
