Petra declined rapidly under Roman rule in large part from the revision of sea-based trade routes. In 363 an earthquake destroyed many buildings and crippled the vital water management system. In the 12th century the Crusaders built fortresses but left after a while. As a result Petra was forgotten for the Western world until the 19th century. The first European to describe them the ruins was Swiss traveller Johann Ludwig Burckhardt during his travels in 1812. The Scottish painter David Roberts visited Petra in 1839 and returned to England with sketches ." Wiki In this advertisement "Mr Swift" announces "a course of 2 lectures in the New London Court House in this place commencing Wednesday evening April 14th upon PETRA or The Excavated City". He exclaims that the lecture will be accompanied by "Seventeen large and beautifully executed paintings representing the present condition of these wonderful and justly celebrated cities." The broadside then goes on to describe in detail the subject of each of the 17 paintings. He concludes by asserting "The views exhibited are real Paintings --- not Magic Lantern illusions." No doubt this Mr Smith was riding the coattails of Roberts' sketches. one wonders where today might be found those paintings. And if no longer extant here we document their onetime existence. As an aside it should be noted that Eli Smith had a bit of a brouhaha with one J. S. Buckingham who also published some text on Petra of which Smith felt there were inaccuracies and so published same. The contretemps resulting in Buckingham publishing an 1840 pamphlet documenting the correspondence between the two: PUBLIC ADDRESS DELIVERED BY MR. BUCKINGHAM In DEFENSE Of His LECTURES On PALESTINE AGAINST The CRITICISMS Of The REV. ELI SMITH PUBLISHED ANONYMOUSLY In The NEW YORK OBSERVER In 1839. No copies of this broadside found on OCLC. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. 8vo. (18 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 80 p. Probably taken from a volume. Minor wear on spine. Light fading on pages. Otherwise a very good copy. This interesting, very rare, and also pseudo-historical first book penned specifically on the Yezîdî people by an Ottoman statesman, initially prepared as a report and then published in 1912, before WWI in Ottoman Cairo. One of only three written Eastern sources about this interesting community that has been subject to extremely controversial approaches throughout history. The first is the travel corpus of Evliya Çelebi, the second is 'Abede-i Iblis', and the third is "Al-Yazidiyya Kadîmen wa Hadisen", which was published in Arabic in Beirut in 1934. Yezîdîs, a member of a Kurdish religious minority found primarily in northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey, northern Syria, the Caucasus region and parts of Iran. The Yezîdî religion includes elements of ancient Iranian religions as well as elements of Judaism, Nestorian Christianity and Islam. Although scattered and probably numbering merely between 200,000 and 1,000,000, the Yezîdîs have a well-organized society, with a chief sheikh as the supreme religious head and an emir, or prince, as the secular head. The origins of the Yezîdî faith can be traced to areas of the Kurdish mountains of northern Iraq where pockets of devotion to the fallen Umayyad dynasty persisted long after the death of the last Umayyad caliph, the half-Kurdish Marwan II, in 750. Some descendants of the dynasty settled in the area, further encouraging the development of mystical traditions in which the Umayyad lineage was prominently figured. In the early 12th century, Sheikh 'Adî ibn Musâfir, a Sufi and a descendant of the Umayyads, settled in Lâlish, north of Mosul, and began a Sufi order known as the Adwiyyah. Although his own teachings were strictly orthodox, the beliefs of his followers soon blended with local traditions. A distinct Yezîdî community living in the environs of Mosul appears in historical sources as early as the middle of the 12th century. This book includes descriptions of the Yezîdîs , albeit all the prejudices within it, on their geography, origins, mythology, religions, cosmogony, etc. The book has a long chapter on Yezîdîs' chief divine Malak ?âûs [or, Tavus] ("Peacock Angel"). Malak Taus has often been identified by outsiders with the Judeo-Christian figure of Satan, causing the Yezîdîs to be inaccurately described as "Devil worshippers", as seen in this pseudo-historical book as well. Mann had toured Europe with his new wife Mary Peabody and friend Samuel Gridley Howe and studied schools in eight countries with special interest in the Prussian school system. His 1844 annual report comparing American and European school systems was received with great offense by Boston schoolteachers. "A group of thirty-one schoolmasters. . . published a sharply worded critique of his seventh Annual Report" targeting "Mann's recommendations for teacher training as well as his opposition to corporal punishment." However this group "soon faced Mann's wrath in the form of written rejoinders" and were ultimately vanquished when "Mann's allies were elected to the Boston School Committee."

Despite the controversy Mann's efforts to "merge the best that he found in European educational systems with the principles of the growing American common school movement" saw remarkable success. Under his direction the Board of Education spent over $2 million on improved school buildings increased teacher salaries by over 50% opened fifty new high schools commissioned uniform school textbooks from Boston publishers and alotted time for student exercise-shaping the public school system as we know it ANB. 5815SIEGE OF BOSTON. The Siege of Boston lasted from April 1775 to March 1776 when the British withdrew from the city. General Henry Knox hauled captured cannons across Massachusetts in the middle of winter to fortify Dorchester Heights and the British knew their position was unsustainable so they retreated to Nova Scotia.DS. 1pg. 6 x 2 . September 15 1775. Winter Hill Somerville Massachusetts. A document signed Benja Tuck concerning wages; this was written during the important Siege of Boston. Tuck communicated: I Benj Tuck Do give this order to Capt. Moses Leavitt to Draw what wages is Due or Shall be allowd to me for Being in the American Service Benj Tuck. The reference to the American service is relatively early coming nine months before the Declaration of Independence and three months after Bunker Hill. This phrase means that the soldiers saw themselves as part of a different military than the British Army and this was three months after the Continental Army was officially formed. Moses Leavitt 1745-1803 was a Continental Army officer from North Hampton New Hampshire and later a general of their militia as well as a state senator. Tuck was most likely a soldier from New Hampshire. Winter Hill is a part of Somerville Massachusetts and important during the American Revolution. In 1775 British troops marched on Winter Hill to attack a powder house owned by the patriots. Just after Bunker Hill wounded Continental Army soldiers were hospitalized there. The document is housed in a contemporary frame; there is the usual foxing and soiling and a vertical fold. unknown

Most of the 2nd and 3rd pages consists of a reprinting of a letter from Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State to Gouverneur Morris Minister Plenipotentiary to France. Jefferson writes against French provocations during the "Citizen Genet Affair" and other maritime actions that go against George Washington's policy of neutrality during the War between France and Great Britain.
