First editions of this charming children's book seldom appear for sale. Wonderful illustrations by Caroline Hemming done in black and white with each panel featuring a black background with stylized figures in white on it these illustrations are quite striking. Light spotting on front cover else near fine. Number twenty of the limited edition of 500 copies. Similar in appearance and presentation to the 1883 SKETCH BOOK of the Architectural Association of Boston perhaps intended to be a continuation of it. Most of the plates in the present set are charming sketches reproduced in albertype of late Gothic buildings of France and Spain drawn by several Boston architects. This is almost certainly the first printed Boston Athenæum exhibition catalogue. It lists over three hundred paintings by living artists e.g. Stuart Peale Sully G.S. Newton and others and deceased "Old Masters." Each listing includes the title of the painting and artist's name as well as that of the proprietor. Most of the living artists are American although many of the Old Masters are European. Though not dated this catalogue was printed sometime before 1835 the year in which Gilbert Stuart Newton noted as a living artist died. unknown books

The earlier issue includes a brief biography of Lucien Bonaparte and various political notices most importantly regarding the negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase its constitutional ramifications for the United States and the reluctance of Spain to recognize the sale of the territory by France to the U.S. News of the purchase had become public on Oct. 17. On Nov. 30 Spain formally delivered the colony to the French colonial prefect who transferred the territory to William Claiborne and Gen. Wilkinson the American commissioners on Dec. 20. Begins by informing them that he has 'Ship'd on board the Sloop Beaver Cap: Thos: Metcalf master bound from hence to Bermuda Sundry Merchandize as pr: Invoice & Bill Lading Inclos'd Amounting to Three hundred & Sixty Eight pounds & 5d: Lawfull money which comes to your Address to dispose of to the best Advantage upon my Account in the Island of Bermuda Commission the same you were to have for Laying out the first Adventure .'. He wishes them to 'Close the Sales of this Invoice as soon as Possible' as he would rather 'sell to a small Profit for Prompt pay & finish the Affair soon then sic to have any Accounts Opend to make a long Affair of the mattter'.
