Some light corner and edge chipping to the board and paper. Light toning to the paper. No date provided. The National Theatre was in existence in Boston from 1836-1863. These plays were held at Amesbury Mills a prosperous industrial location north of Boston. Printed under the top heading of the broadside - "This Company comprises a well selected and talented list from the BOSTON THEATRES and MUSEUM. They have met with most brilliant success and have been pronounced by the public voice the best COMPANY now TRAVELLING." The plays performed on Friday Evening May 19th include:<br /> <br /> Come and Laugh! Glorious Bill. A new Domestic Drama to Night showing life in an ENGLISH FACTORY. A LAUGHABLE IRISH FARCE.<br /> <br /> FAC-TORY GIRL or VIRTUE TRIUMPHANT<br /> <br /> PADDY MILES an Irish Farce. The National Theatre in Boston was founded in Boston and was active from 1836-1863. From wikipedia: The National Theatre 1836-1863 was a theatre in the West End of Boston Massachusetts in the mid-19th century.12 William Pelby established the enterprise in 1836 and presented productions of "original pieces and the efforts of a well selected stock company which with few exceptions have been American. The scenery is of the highest order and the business of the stage well directed. Mr C.A. Eaton made his debut at this theatre and here Mr. F.S. Hill's early labors were eminently successful. Mr. J.S. Jones has written and produced on this stage thirty pieces embracing every department except tragedy."3 William Washburn designed the building erected on the site of the former Warren Theatre. Performers at the National included Edwin Adams Marietta Zanfretta Jean Margaret Davenport4 Julia Dean Jonathan Harrington W.H. Smith5 Mary Ann Vincent and Billy Whitlock. In 1852 the theatre burnt down and was rebuilt.6 In 1863 the building was again destroyed by fire.7 E.B. Williams was listed as a manager for the company but there is no mention of Munroe. <br /> <br /> The Amesbury and Salisbury Mills Village Historic District is a historic district on Market Sq. roughly bounded by Boardman Water Main and Pond Streets in Amesbury Massachusetts. It was the site of significant industrial development between 1800 and 1875 during which time the town developed a significant textile processing industry. Among the buildings in the district is the Salisbury Mill #4 a four-story brick Greek Revival building which features dentil decorations on its eaves and towers.2 The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.1 wikipedia<br /> <br /> The printer Edward Gilman Frothingham 1811-1875 was a writer and owner of the Haverhill Gazette from 1843-1869. From the OCLC site most of the publications listed in World Cat by Frothingham spanned years 1858-60. Some publications were done in 1866. No listing for this broadside has been found. Title arches over an etching of a three masted ship steaming at sea. Boston Lloyds was an insurance organization formed as "an Association for the purpose of taking Marine Risks by means of Individual Underwriting" and "by power of attorney have ing each member authorized Richard S. Haven to make insurance for them in their individual capacity as the said Richard S. Haven may deem proper; and for that purpose to perform all acts necessary to the proper fulfillment of the object." There were sixty members each allowing Haven to commit them up to $500 each. One of the firms was S. C. Thwing & Co. of Boston whose commitment document this is. Its primary owner was Supply Clap Thwing 1798-1871 a wealthy businessman with roots tracing back to the Pilgrims. He was active in the mercantile trade between the East Indies and New Orleans was a ship owner and active in the coal trade. Richard S. Haven came to Boston from California became an insurance agent for a number of companies before forming Boston Lloyds which unfortunately did not last half a decade perhaps failing about 1874. Rare. The only known documents on Boston Lloyds are held in the archives of the Peabody Essex Museum. Very good in a very good dust jacket with some light rubbing and small tears. The basis of the 1968 motion picture directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Tony Curtis as the mass murderer De Salvo and Henry Fonda as the chief detective that got the murderer to confess. Arthur Jacob Arshawsky 1910 - 2004 better known as Artie Shaw started out his career in music at thirteen as a saxophone player and switched to the clarinet at sixteen. He gained experience and skill while on the road at a young age which lead to steady work in the 30s as a session musician and performing with various bands and orchestras and on radio. His first critical acclaim came with his performance of “Interlude in B-flat" at a swing concert at the Imperial Theater in New York in 1935. And during the swing era Shaw's big band enjoyed such enduring hits like Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" "Back Bay Shuffle†"Moonglow†"Rosalie" "Frenesi" and "Summit Ridge Drive." Throughout his career he worked with many of the great jazz musicians and vocalists of his day including Helen Forrest Mel Torme drummers Buddy Rich and Dave Tough guitarists Barney Kessel Jimmy Raney and Tal Farlow and trombonist-arranger Ray Conniff. A charismatic and complicated man Shaw was married eight times most notably to actresses Lana Turner Ava Gardner Doris Dowling and Evelyn Keyes Betty Kern the daughter of songwriter Jerome Kern and ‘Forever Amber’ author Kathleen Winsor. In 2004 he was presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition to his musical career and accomplishments he is the author of an autobiography ‘The Trouble With Cinderella: An Outline of Identity’ three short novels; ‘I Love You I Hate You Drop Dead!’ a collection of short stories ‘The Best of Intentions and Other Stories’ and an autobiographical novel titled ‘The Education of Albie Snow’ which sadly never made it to publication. 193933An archive of 3 letters and 7 telegrams to and from Mrs. Elsie V. Kenway and her daughter Margaret who arrived in Europe August 1939 stayed in Paris and went to Switzerland. By the end of the month they are nervous about war breaking out and notify the American Consulate in Bern. Consul John H. Madonne writes that he will notify them if it is advisable that they leave the country. Elsie cables her husband about what to do. He suggests staying in Switzerland or going to Holland to be able to take a Dutch boat in case of war. By the first week of September Herbert wires money so they can return - and they book passage on an Italian liner from Genoa to New York. 2 letters from Herbert are returned to him in October not having caught up with Elsie. "Dear War Babies This is the third time I have written you but Hitler and you are charging around so often that I feel sure you will get no letters."
