1871200841871. Chirurgie der Nieren 1 Theil v. 2 - Erlagen Verlag von Ferdinand Enke 1871 VIII 89 pp. 2 lith. Tafeln Halbleinenband d.Zt.; St. verso Tit.; erste Lage im Falz gebrochen Papier wie immer gebräunt. First Edition - Rare! "First succesful nephrectomy" Begin of modern urologic surgery. The era of modern urological surgery began in 1869 when Gustav Simon performed the first carefully planned nephrectomy. After writing a brief notice of the operation in 1870 Exstirpation einer Niere am Menschen. Dtsch. Klin. 1870 22 137-138 Simon prepared a detailed illustrated account which he published as Volume I of his Chirurgie der Nieren. This volume contains two lithographed plates the first a schematic drawing of the patient's injury and the second an unusually artistic rendition probably from a photograph of the postoperative patient standing in front of a mirror displaying her surgical scars. The second volume issued five years after the first deals with the subject of kidney surgery in general discussing operations on both injured and diseased kidneys. This volume over three times as long as its predecessor contains seven plates three in color showing a gunshot injury to the kidney renal calculus and hypertrophy and pre- and post-operative pictures of a case of hydronephrosis successfully cured by surgery. 54669London: John and Josiah Boydell. 1796 1803. Original copper engraving. From "A Collection of Prints. Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare." published by Boydell London 1803. In 1789 the publisher John Boydell opened the Shakespeare Gallery an exhibition space in London's Pall Mall showcasing paintings that exclusively represented scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The Gallery was a bid to revive 'history painting' the practice of depicting scenes from the Bible mythology or the classics in contemporary British art a genre thought to be of great public benefit because of its morally instructive messages. What better unifying theme for such a project than the works of Shakespeare which had become so popular and so integral to British identity by the mid-18th century The Gallery opened in May 1789 with 34 canvases by 18 British artists. By the next year there were 55 paintings and in 1796 the total was 84 along with dozens of 'Small Pictures'. Once the exhibition was mounted reproductive engravings of the paintings produced by an in-house team of 46 printmakers were available to purchase either as a large portfolio of 90 prints or as a luxurious illustrated edition of the plays. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 was a French journalist and lawyer "whose delight in taking views opposing everyone else's earned him exiles imprisonment and finally the guillotine" Encyclopaedia Britannica online. Throughout the 1760s and 1770s Linguet was perhaps the most renowned lawyer in France widely esteemed for his eloquence and legal acumen until his attacks on other lawyers led to his expulsion from the bar in 1775. He specifically rejects the notion that the English are free and that their institutions provide a model for the French a popular idea among philosophes and criticizes Montesquieu's analysis of laws and the state. Throughout the book there are short entries on individual demons but Pandemonium is more than just a visual encyclopedia. It also focuses on the influence of figures like Beelzebub Azazel Lilith and Moloch on Western religion literature and art. Ranging from the earliest scriptural references to demons through the contemporary era when the devils took on a subtler form Pandemonium functions as a compendium of Lucifer's subjects from Dante's The Divine Comedy to John Milton's Paradise Lost and all the points in between. Containing rarely seen illustrations of very old treatises on demonology as well as more well-known works by the great masters of Western painting this book celebrates the art of hell like never before.Show moreGenresArtNonfictionHistoryReligionMythologyHorrorOccult400 pages HardcoverFirst published February 22 2022This editionFormat 400 pages HardcoverPublished February 22 2022 by CernunnosISBN 9781419756382 ISBN10: 1419756389Language English Abrams hardcover
