Library stamps/marks/label/slip light tone otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover. ; A description of the income structure of the professions of medicine dentistry law accounting and engineering during 1929-36. "W Allen Wallis went first to New Deal Washington. Largely through his efforts I followed in the summer of 1935 working at the National Resources Committee on the design of a large consumer budget study then under way. This was one of the two principal components of my later Theory of the Consumption Function. The other came from my next job - at the National Bureau of Economic Research where I went in the fall of 1937 to assist Simon Kuznets in his studies of professional income. The end result was our jointly published Incomes from Independent Professional Practice which also served as my doctoral dissertation at Columbia. That book was finished by 1940 but its publication was delayed until after the war because of controversy among some Bureau directors about our conclusion that the medical profession's monopoly powers had raised substantially the incomes of physicians relative to that of dentists. More important scientifically that book introduced the concepts of permanent and transitory income." - Milton Friedman Nobel Prize Autobiography. 1786124540Berlin: no publisher 1786. First edition in German of Linguet's treatise on syphilis first printed in French in 1766 as La Cacomonade. Linguet chose as his pseudonym Pangloss the optimistic teacher in Voltaire's Candide who is blighted by syphilis. Linguet presents the book as a supplement to Voltaire's work although this German edition identifies him as the author. Linguet's choice of pseudonym is an interesting attribution and was probably an attempt to capitalize on the success of Candide which had proved highly popular undergoing seventeen editions in its publication year of 1759 alone. Linguet's treatise on syphilis traces the origins of the disease as with Voltaire tracing it to the sailors of Columbus and proposes measures to stem its spread. Linguet 1736-1794 was a respected lawyer indeed perhaps the most renowned lawyer in France in the 1760s and 1770s but was fond of being a controversialist with his wide-ranging polemics on history politics and law garnering him many enemies. He eventually ended up under the guillotine's knife as a reactionary but was re-appraised by Marx and other 19th-century socialists due to his critiques of free wage labour as disguised servitude. Octavo 163 x 103 mm. Early 19th-century specked paper-covered boards orange and brown labels. Scuffed light wear at head of spine and head of front joint a few minor instances of soiling to contents. A very good copy. Hayn-Got VI 16. hardcover

Although often referred to as the first appearance of this work it is in fact the first French translation of Lord Grange’s Lord Lovat’s legal adviser ‘Memoires of the Life of Simon Fraser Lord Lovat’ from 1746. Dr. Hill Burton notes that this is “the least inaccurate†biographical contemporary account of Lord Lovat which has ever appeared. The 11th Lord Lovat 1667 –1747 also known as Simon Fraser was famous for his involvement in the Jacobite uprisings in Scotland during the 18th century and for being the last man in Britain to be beheaded. Lord Lovat is perhaps most famously known for his support of the Jacobite cause during the Jacobite Rising of 1745. He initially pledged allegiance to the British government but later switched sides to support the claim of Charles Edward Stuart also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie to the British throne. Lovat's decision to join the Jacobites was motivated by a combination of personal ambition and political calculation. Lovat's support for the Jacobites culminated in his participation in the Battle of Culloden in 1746 where the Jacobite forces were decisively defeated by the British government army. After the battle Lovat attempted to evade capture but was eventually apprehended. He was tried for treason and subsequently executed in 1747. </em> hardcover
