187166Boston; Nov. 1 1871. 1871 9 pp. folio. This indenture was made the first day of November 1871 between the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company and Oliver Ames and Charles F. Choate. The Atlantic and Pacific was to be built from Missouri and Arkansas to the Pacific Coast. From the very beginning the Atlantic and Pacific was plagued with problems even though they had the same rights as other transcontinental railroads regarding bonds land grants etc. Ames and Choate noted bankers of railroads and other various schemes were to loan to the railroad in gold coin. The amount is left blank in this document and the document is not signed by the parties. They were to be repaid in gold coin with an annual interest rate of 6%. In addition to the indenture listed above another indenture was made with George Bigeldow and James Dixwell. 2 pp. with manuscript corrections and additions. Including a provision to enable the Atlantic and Pacific to mortgage the road. This document was written earlier and does not have nearly as many provisions as in the Ames and Choate indenture. Four years later the Atlantic and Pacific would lapse into receivership. Oliver Ames then the largest stockholder purchased 96697 acres of the road's Missouri lands. After reorganization the A & P had some life until the panic of 1893 and the spoils were then divided between the Santa Fe and Frisco. These two documents are important in understanding the financial development of this railroad. Atlantic and Pacific material is quite scarce. Oliver Ames was the brother of Oakes. This railroad was to have been a very important development for Arkansas and Missouri. These documents are housed in a very attractive folding box 9 x 7 3/4 inches with green cloth-covered boards and a green morocco spine label with gilt lettering. 3214013 OG2080. 1st Edition. 1901ST13907
This is a very rare map of Kansas from 1902 shoiwing all the railroad companies operating in the state at that time. The map has a linen backing enclosed in a small carrying case. The case has writing on both sides and there is one note on the linen backing one one panel. See photos for each of these. The map itself has no marks and seems to be in great shape for it's 123 years. Fully folded out the map is roughly 21" by 30.5". Very few maps similar to this are found on the internet and I did not find another from 1902.
J. N. Matthews Co.

1960233391960. Railroad labor photo archive documenting manual track rehabilitation work on a rural rail line likely Minnesota circa 1960s during the period when thousands of miles of lightly used American branch line track were being abandoned salvaged or transferred into preservation and excursion use. The scenes illustrate the broader contraction of regional rail service that accelerated after World War II as trucking highway construction and changing freight patterns undermined small-line profitability. Crews work directly on deteriorated rails and ties using pry bars hammers jacks buckets and lining tools recording the physical labor required to maintain secondary rail infrastructure before mechanized maintenance became dominant on many smaller lines. Several scenes suggest volunteer or preservation-oriented work rather than standard commercial railroad maintenance including the mixed-age crew casual work clothing and informal group arrangements. Notations identify John L. Blamey on two images possibly referring to a Minnesota photographer of the same name.

Photo archive of 12 black and white Kodak prints each 5 x 7 inches likely silver gelatin photographs Minnesota circa 1960s. Workers stand along heavily worn track in wooded rural terrain while replacing ties aligning rails clearing ballast and fastening hardware by hand. A rail maintenance vehicle and small rail equipment appear in the distance in several scenes while other views isolate long stretches of neglected track curving through leaf-covered corridors. Younger participants in denim overalls work alongside older men in railroad caps and heavy work jackets suggesting a collaborative rehabilitation effort rather than a fully standardized railroad gang. Buckets oil cans pry bars spikes and timber ties are positioned directly along the right-of-way emphasizing the improvised and labor-intensive character of the work. One scene captures two men driving spikes while kneeling beside exposed ties; another shows a larger crew spread across the rails with tools arranged in parallel lines along the track bed. Several prints bear manuscript identification to "John L. Blamey." One still life of dining utensils and tableware appears within the group perhaps a meal shared by the group or an image retained from the same processing batch.

By the 1960s many Midwestern branch lines faced abandonment as railroads consolidated operations and shifted investment toward higher-volume freight corridors. Across states such as Minnesota Wisconsin and Iowa local historical societies preservation groups and volunteer railroad organizations increasingly intervened to salvage depots rolling stock and short rail segments before removal. These scenes preserve the transition period when maintaining even a short stretch of track still depended upon coordinated hand labor and inherited railroad knowledge. No loss or wear noted; prints clean and sharply detailed. Overall in very good to near fine condition. unknown

19029848London Waterlow and Sons Ltd c. 1902. CLR passenger map sheet size 14.5 x 33 cm printed in colours trivial spotting on verso guide-book issue with blank verso. Leboff and Demuth No Need to Ask p. 33 describe this as a new form of map which was to be commonplace until the 1930s. a street layout printed on paper and folded into four with travel information on the reverse side. As this is a guide-book issue the information on the verso has been omitted Passengers were requested not to smoke in the lifts and to refrain from spitting and sensible restrictions were placed on baggage banning heavy and bulky luggage which cannot be carried without inconvenience to Passgengers. However this Central London Railway map remains innovative for two reasons: firstly the CLR paved the way in giving maps away to passengers something which we now take for granted but which only became viable as printing became cheaper; secondly they also established a precdent for distributing quantities of their official map at no charge to commercial publishers to be bound into guide books. Presumably it was seen as free advertising and it became a standard practice for London Transport and its predeccessors in the first half of the 20th cnetury. Map unknown
19248477London: Waterlow and Sons 1924-25. Passenger map of the Metropolitan Railway 43 x 34 cms printed in colours with travel information on verso wear to intersections of a couple of folds a couple of short splits; dark red covers print code G1608/100000 undated but c. 1924-25 with large red arrow indicating the British Empire Exhibition and Cup Final Stadium. In 1933 the Met became part of the LPTB in 1933. Here though the Tube and other railways fade into the background. The emphasis is on work/life balance commuting from Metro-land a term coined by the railway companys Publicity Department with its golf courses rapidly diminishing countryside and beauty spots such as Pinner and Ruislip a fragment of that older and more beautiful world. A panel on the verso extols the virtues of living in Metro-land purchasing from the Metropolitan Railway Country Estates Ltd: unlike any of their competitors the Met was directly involved in residential property development.
