James ghost story writes a very substantial letter on the character activities school influence etc. of Douglas Byng-Stamper whose death evoked an Agatha Christie style mystery. See Google "Death on an Oban-bound Train" for a comprehensive article on the incident. William Hope-Jones evokes references on Google such as in court for bathing "without sufficient dress" or the following AI spiel: "William Hope-Jones known as "Hojo" at Eton was a math teacher and housemaster at Eton College noted for his eccentricity. He was a King's Scholar 1900-1906 Assistant Master 1907-1950 and Housemaster 1924-1939. Hope-Jones is also remembered for his loud singing and for writing the humorous song "National Anthem of the Ancient Britons" also known as "Woad" or "The Woad Ode" according to Wikipedia. Library stamp on back of title page some soiling to wrappers corners nicked and a slight vertical crease. Otherwise very good. Scarce pamphlet offering a view of the building of the transcontinental railroad and some of the challenges it faced including those related to the crossing the Sierra Nevada. The map shows most of the U.S. excluding the southern fringe with the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads connecting just north of Salt Lake City. The map also shows the proposed Southern Pacific Railroad from St. Louis to Southern California. The pamphlet talks about the need for the railroad because of the gold discoveries and the unlimited agricultural potential of the region. Paper covers with titles to the upper cover and publisher's advertisement to lower both with vignette views and enclosing 16 folding panels measuring 210 x 21.2 cm in total revealing a chart of the railway line between London and Brighton with vignette views and descriptions of notable places of interest en route. Covers dust-soiled and lightly worn at extremities with a few small holes in the spine and 1cm splits in the spine at the head and foot together with a touch of creasing to the corners. Internally the panels are a little toned to the edges with occasional light spotting. All in all a remarkable survival produced in the earliest years of the Brighton Line. The message from the prime minister thanking the four British Main Line Railway companies for their work especially that during the war on the occassion of their 21st anniversary. Though he is not refered to by name on the poster Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister during this time and it is from him the gratitude is intended to come. The four railway companies included in the British Main Line Railway were the Great Western Railway GWR London Midland and Scottish Railway LMS London and North Eastern Railway LNER and the Southern Railway SR 1944 Jas Truscott & Sons LTD unknown

The memorable dinner banquet included courses of California Oysters Kennebec Salmon in Holland Sauce Broiled Mushrooms Filet of Beef Richelieu and the Canvas-Back Duck with Celery Sauce. There is a map of California Northwestern Railway and Connections on the inside of the rear cover. The railroad was formed in 1898 and merged into the Northwestern Pacific Railway in 1907. A lovely color pictorial map 17" x 45.5" folding to 8.5" x 4" and showing the route of the Canadian Pacific from Calgary and Macleod in the east to Vancouver and Seattle in the west as well as several shorter branch lines. Map has a split at one fold but is otherwise in fine condition. Over-sized folder has chips and tears. Includes excellent detail of topography with different mountain ranges identified and names and elevations given for many individual peaks. Parks are also identified as are numerous small towns. Steamer lines are shown in Kootenay Lake Arrow Lake Okanagan Lake and the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca. There is a table of distances at the lower right and an inset map of the coastline from Seattle to Skagway Alaska. Privately printed, 1924. unknown
