Volume in folio (cm 21,5 x 32), slegato, inserito in copertina di tela azzurra con titolo e autore in oro al piatto. Contiene cc (110), (1) bianca, vergate in leggibile grafia, a volte su una sola facciata, a volte su due. Appena uscito dall'Accademia, il giovane ufficiale del Genio Badessi Giuseppe, di Milano, si imbarca sulla Regia Nave S. Giorgio a Livorno il 3 luglio 1938; deve compilare giornalmente un "Giornale di bordo", che sarà valutato dai suoi superiori. Poche pagine dopo l'inizio, infatti, troviamo, scritto con la matita blu, un giudizio: "Cercate di scrivere in modo più intelligibile", un voto per contenuto ed uno per la forma, i timbri e le firme del Tenente di Vascello Agli Allievi, Leone Monteleoni, nonchè del Capitano di Vascello, Comandante Gino Bombelli, datato 25 luglio. Il diario è relazione degli eventi che si svolgono sulla nave e soprattutto vivace descrizione delle località toccate e visitate, meta spesso di gite di istruzione qualora poste in siti di interesse archeologico, come Cirene o Damasco o le isole greche, oppure testimonianza delle opere compiute dagli italiani in terra d'Africa, a livello edilizio, agricolo, tecnico; resoconto di ricevimenti, cerimonie fasciste, di malesseri causati dal clima torrido; impressioni su eminenti personaggi incontrati, come "S. E. Graziani" o Italo Balbo incontrato durante la navigazione con piacevole sirpresa ed ammirazione , di cui viene tessuto un fervido elogio: lo stesso che verrà abbattuto dalle batterie della stessa nave, nel 1941. Da Livorno la nave si reca a Cagliari, dove l'A. lamenta la scarsa disponibilità a fare nuove conoscenze da parte di "giovanotti e signorine" del posto; i circoli locali sono molto chiusi e diffidenti verso i marinai. Animatissima la descrizione della tappa successiva, Bengasi, con numerose pennellate di colore locale, e la delusione per le donne che non sono tutte "Veneri nere" ma talvolta di forme troppo abbondanti per essere piacevoli, ed ornate di tatuaggi che rendono perplesso il giovane. Trapela dalle righe l'insofferenza per le lunghe navigazioni, onde l'A. auspicherebbe di "avere sotto i piedi almeno un vaso di fiori, per sentire poggiare la scarpa sulla terra!". Seguono le descrizioni delle seguenti località, presentate anche in base alla loro storia remota e recente, nonchè negli abitanti, nelle strutture preesistenti ed in quelle importate dagli italiani, ed in base alle impressioni del giovane viaggiatore: Tobruch, Alessandria d'Egitto, Beirut, Rodi, Salonicco, Patmos, Lero (con schizzi di palme e di resti archeologici), Corfù, Trieste (schizzo della pianta della città). TROVATO QUESTE NOTIZIE SULLA NAVE: La regia nave San Giorgio fu impostata sugli scali del cantiere navale di Castellammare di Stabia il 4 Luglio 1905, varata nel 1908, entrò in servizio il 1 Luglio 1910.<br>Nell'estate del 1924 portò il principe Umberto di Savoia nell'America Latina, poi ancora crociere e viaggi vari sino a che, per l'avvento di altre navi più moderne fu considerato superato e divenne nave-scuola per cannonieri ed in seguito, trasformato in batteria contraerea galleggiante, con l'aggiunta di altri armamenti, opportunamente riattato fu inviato nella baia di Tobruk dove i bassi fondali ostacolavano i tentativi di siluramento.<br>Tobruk, in Cirenaica, allora piazzaforte italiana dove si pativa eternamente la sete per la mancanza assoluta di acqua che doveva essere fornita con cisterne.<br>Il 10 Giugno 1940 l'Italia entrò in guerra con Francia ed Inghilterra.<br>Il 12 Giugno 1940 il San Giorgio sparò i primi colpi contro gli inglesi. Da quel momento ne sparerà decine di migliaia ininterrottamente, giorno e notte fino al 21 Gennaio 1941: per sette mesi e nove giorni.<br>Il 18 Giugno combinò un guaio abbattendo l'aereo di Italo Balbo. Questi era partito con due aerei dal campo di El Fateyach alla volta di Sidi Azeis per visitare la 2º Divisione Libica al ritorno, giungeva nel cielo di Tobruk mentre era in corso un incursione inglese, per farsi riconoscere come aerei italiani, avrebbero dovuto compiere a levante dell'insenatura di Tobruk, un giro di 360º a 300 metri di quota ma nessuno dei due aerei lo fece con il risultato che furono scambiati per inglesi ed investiti dal fuoco del San Giorgio. L'aereo di Balbo fu abbattuto ed in Italia dopo il fattaccio si mormorò che il Duce non fosse estraneo all'accaduto tanto che fu molto in voga all'epoca dire di qualcuno che veniva fatto fuori: " Ha fatto la fine di Italo Balbo". Fu un tragico equivoco? tutt'oggi ad oltre 50 anni, il mistero non è stato ancora chiarito.<br>Il personale del San Giorgio era costituito dal comandante Stefano Pugliese, settecento uomini ed una cagnetta, " Stoppaccio", la mascotte di bordo. Bilancio delle operazioni di quei sette mesi e nove giorni: trecentoventicinque allarmi, centottantuno combattimenti. In una sola occasione furono sparati milleduecentocinquantuno colpi. In una sola notte fu aperto il fuoco contro ben diciannove differenti incursioni.<br>Così dal 12 Giugno 1940 questa piazzaforte galleggiante, ancorata nel profondo del golfo, quale batteria galleggiante della contraerea, ha un non so che di straordinario e di prodigioso. Si direbbe che la nave goda di una speciale concessione del cielo, grazie all'intercessione del santo di cui porta il nome, l'indomito cavaliere, fiero e sereno sul suo destriero con la spada fiammeggiante. Come spiegare altrimenti che, durante sette mesi di continui, martellanti bombardamenti dal cielo e dal mare, l'incrociatore non sia stato mai colpito?<br>Sin dai primi giorni di guerra gli inglesi, partiti in nove per un incursione aerea, ritornanono in quattro. Cinque apparecchi non fecero ritorno. Ci avevano provato anche dal mare, subito, il secondo giorno di guerra. Gli inglesi cercavano un successo immediato: due loro navi si presentarono davanti a Tobruk, il San Giorgio si trovava quasi all'ingresso dell'insenatura, non era un incontro ad armi pari, gli inglesi erano in due e potevano manovrare mentre la nave italiana era ferma ancorata nel porto e costituiva un facile bersaglio fisso invece le cose andarono diversamente. On y suit les 3 années de pérégrinations du navire et de son équipage de Toulon à Shanghai en passant par Suez, la Mer Rouge, Djibouti, Ceylan, Sabang, l'Indochine et Saïgon, Angkor et le Cambodge, la baie d'Along, les mystères du Japon (et des japonaises..."Tout de même... elles étaient gentilles..."), Kagoshima et Kamakura, Hong-Kong, Shanghaï, la Chine et ses odeurs, le Houang-Poo, vers Nankin et Hankow sur le Yangtse, le Primauguet au secours de l'Aramis, Pékin, la Grande Muraille... Très richement illustré de photographies, l'album est légendé avec humour et orné de très nombreux dessins. On ne se lasse pas de le relire, et d'étudier en détail chaque cliché. A la fin du premier mémoire, La Bastide transcrit une note de Laborde dans laquelle ce dernier lui reconnaît la priorité sur ce projet. Le second mémoire s'intitule: 'Réflexions sur les rapports de la communication de la mer du Nord à la mer du sud, par le lac de Nicaragua, avec l'établissement permis aux anglois par leur dernier traité avec l'Espagne'. Ce traité donnait aux anglais la liberté de s'établir et de naviguer depuis la baie de Nootka jusqu'au cap Mendocino" (Vente Zoummeroff, n°95). (France Littéraire, IV. 324. Polak, 4909.
