Pictorial blue-gray publisher’s cloth cover art illustration of airship tower and clouds by Decorative Designers initials in lower right white lettering front cover & spine some edgewear rubbing minor soiling and thumbing ex-lib markings on endpapers & spine still a G copy from the Southern Pacific Railway Clubs car library. First American edition of this excellent and well-illustrated work on aviation by Santos-Dumont who was a pioneering Brazilian aviator at the turn-of-the-19th- into the 20th-Century. The diminutive playboy and talented engineering machinist raced motorized tricycles Locomobiles and began building his own dirigibles and in 1901 piloted his Airship No. 6 sround the Eiffel Tower. In 1904 after publication of this work he began experimenting heavier-than-air aircraft building an unsuccessful helicopter in 1905 and in 1906 a biplane reminiscent of the Wright Flyer dubbed a “canard†by the French and in 1906 set the first aviation record in Europe. Brazilians like to claim he preceded the Wright Bros. because he made his first flights in front of huge public crowds but aviation experts and historians demur. The Century Co., hardcover

1935183918London: Rolls-Royce Limited 1935. A detailed sales brochure introducing the dimensions weights performance statistics and armaments of a variety of bombers attack fighters and flying boats. It also features five planes in its "experimental section" such as the tail-less Pterodactyl V and the Gloster Gnatsnapper naval biplane. The aircraft profiled in the brochure include the single-seater Firefly IIM mostly used by the Belgian Air Force; the Fairey IIIF bomber used to equip RAF squadrons in Egypt Sudan and Aden; and the short-lived Supermarine Scapa flying boat. Another Supermarine the S.6 is depicted in colour opposite the introduction. This plane won the Schneider Trophy in 1929 and 1931. In the latter competition it both won the prize for the UK and broke the world speed record twice. Folio. Colour illustration of the Supermarine Rolls-Royce S.6 tipped in on title page verso half-tone photographic illustrations in text; title page printed in black and blue text in English French and Spanish. Original buff paper wrappers wire-stitched and with metal posts as issued front wrapper lettered and decorated in brown and blind fore-edge tabs lettered in black and strengthened with linen on verso.
