Wrappers slightly and uniformly tanned acidic paper; a fine copy uncirculated. Keartland's field notes make this far more interesting than the 'List of Birds' title suggests. For example he concludes his account of the Nankeen kestrel thus: 'I took four eggs from a tree near our camp and was surprised to find the nest lined with pellets of camel dung. This is probably the first time this material has been used for nest-lining'. Indeed.
Other articles of more-or-less general interest include KOCH Max: A List of Plants collected on Mount Lyndhurst Run 18 pages; BROWNE J. Harris: Use of the Wedge by the Natives of the Great Barrier Plain 1 page; and the address by the president W.L. Cleland 7 pages essentially on the anthropology of Australia. RSSA paperback

Publications de la Societe d'Etudes pour la colonisation de la Guyane francaise Number 4. The bibliographical catalogue occupies pages 579-616 and contains descriptions of 240 works on Guiana. Sabin 56097. First edition.

French Guiana French: Guyane française officially Guyane is an overseas department French: département d'outre-mer or DOM of France located on the northern coast of South America. It has borders with two nations Brazil and Suriname. Like the other DOMs French Guiana is also an overseas region of France one of the 26 regions of France. Its currency is the euro. The prefecture is Cayenne. The addition of the adjective "French" comes from colonial times when three such colonies existed: British Guiana now Guyana Dutch Guiana now Suriname and French Guiana. The three are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas. French Guiana was originally inhabited by a number of indigenous American people. It was settled by the French during the 17th century. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763 Louis XV sent 12000 settlers to French Guiana to colonise the region. One and a half years later only a few hundred survived.2 Its infamous Île du Diable Devil's Island was the site of penal settlements from 1852 until 1951. More than 70000 French convicts were deported to French Guiana between 1852 and 1939.3 In 1809 a Portuguese-British naval squadron took French Guiana for the Portuguese Empire. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1814 the region was handed back to the French though a Portuguese presence remained until 1817. A border dispute with Brazil arose in the late nineteenth century over a vast area of jungle leading to the short-lived pro-French independent state of Counani in the disputed territory and some fighting between settlers before the dispute was resolved largely in favor of Brazil by the arbitration of the Swiss government.

Condition:

Front inner hinge cracked rubbing to hinges and corners some internal foxing else a very good copy. 1907142830NP: Nimrod Expedition 1907. Small piece of vellum 10 X 7 cm. Printed on one side are six words which were intended to have observations recorded adjacent. Other than a bit of shrinkage to the vellum the item is in nice condition. This interesting expedition registration slip seems to have been intended for oceanographic recording. The six areas for recording are titled as follows: No.; Date; Lat.; Long; Depth; and Temp. The provenance for the slip is from the Goldberg collection as the other items in the catalogue. Other than being recorded in the Goldberg personal catalogue as from the Nimrod Expedition there is nothing else to tie it to the expedition. Still an interesting artifact. 1907 Nimrod Expedition hardcover

FIRST EDITION AND A POPULAR ACCOUNT OF THE IMPORTANT BABYLONIAN EXPEDITION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA. The author was the only English member of the American expedition giving him a unique perspective on its intentions and discoveries. BY NILE AND EUPHRATES is not a typical expedition log; it is an account of life in an excavator's camp the journey to camp and the people encountered along the way.
As British member of Petrie's archeological expedition to Egypt and Mesopotamia Geere was present during the important excavations at Nippur. Nippur was situated on both sides of the ancient bed of the Shatt-en-Nil canal one of the earliest courses of the Euphrates between the present bed of that river and the Tigris almost 160 km southeast of Baghdad. The canal bed divides the site into an East Mound and West Mound. It is represented by the great complex of ruin mounds known to the Arabs as Nuffar written by the earlier explorers Niffer and later as Nippur.
Nippur was first excavated briefly by Sir Austen Henry Layard in 1851. But full-scale digging was begun by the expedition from the University of Pennsylvania. The work involved four seasons of excavation between 1889 and 1900 and was led by John Punnett Peters John Henry Haynes and Hermann Volrath Hilprecht all of whom were known to and cited by Geere. Thousands of tablets were found at a smaller mound dubbed "tablet hill" about 7.5 meters in average height and 52 square meters in area southeast of the temple mound.A true arch one of the world's earliest examples was also found. In the Parthian layer a box containing fragments of votive axes made of glass from the Kassite period were found. Several late Kassite rulers are represented including Kurigalzu II. T. & T.
