ABOUT THIS BOOK: In 1498 a young captain sailed from Portugal circumnavigated Africa crossed the Indian Ocean and discovered the sea route to the Indies opening up access to the fabled wealth of the East. It was the longest voyage known to history; the ships were pushed to their limits their crews were racked by storms and devastated by disease. However the greatest enemy was neither nature nor the fear of venturing into unknown worlds. With blood-red Crusader crosses emblazoned on their sails the explorers arrived in the heart of the Muslim East at a time when the old hostilities between Christianity and Islam had intensified. In two voyages that spanned six years Vasco da Gama would fight a running sea battle that would ultimately change the fate of three continents. The Last Crusade is an epic tale of spies intrigue and treachery; of bravado brinkmanship and confused - often comical collisions - between cultures encountering one another for the first time. With the world once again tipping back East The Last Crusade offers a key to understanding age-old religious and cultural rivalries resurgent today. Quantity Available: 1. During those four and a half months 1588000 paying visitors passed through the gates to the 400-acre fairgrounds on the northwest edge of town…The Lewis and Clark Exposition was conceived so Portland could demonstrate that it could mount a major civic enterprise. The city had had a solid record of economic growth since its founding in 1845 but at the turn of the twentieth century it was competing for investment and immigration with dozens of other cities throughout the American West" Carl Abbott on the Oregon Encyclopedia website. 1876895260551
Excellent condition but missing the original map that was originally included. 11 fine chromolithographic and 11 lithographic plates. Publication of this report was originally intended for 1861 but the Civil War intervened and prevented publication for another fifteen years. The expedition under Macomb went west from Santa Fe across northern New Mexico and Arizona to the Colorado. The whole drainage of the San Juan had been traced and the relationship of that river with the Colorado clearly established. More important they had also established that the Green River united with the Grand to form the Colorado. The entire maze of intricate canyon country had been threaded and its geography revealed for the first time. In addition Newberry was able to establish numerous stratigraphic columns and to trace the Triassic Jurassic and Carboniferous strata far out across the Colorado River. Newberry.introduced a new level of sophistication into the study of western geology.
Government printing office hardcover

Numerous rubber stamps having been erased on the margins with repairs on the backs. One page with a large amount of the corner renewed with slight loss. Numerous black and white illustration. 5 folding maps. An index has been cut out from somewhere else and pasted onto the title pages. A good only copy of a rare and fragile item. Authors include Skottsberg Nordenskjold Anderson Charcot and Jalour. The second issue includes articles by Scott Harvey and Rudmore Brown. This very scarce Argentine Journal is printed on poor quality paper which probably contributed to its scarcity. The front endpaper is inscribed in Spanish with the following: To His Excellence the President of the delegation of the Republic of Peru at the VIII Pan American Conference at Montevideo in my personal affections and signed perhaps by Francisco Segui who was the editor of the Journal. Not a prime copy but very very scarce. 1904 Local Del Instituto: Arenales 687 hardcover
