Original manuscript autograph document signed by Mehmed Said Pasha sent to Trabzon Vilayat Ordu Kaza Hasbamane Nahiya local manager faziletlu 'Mehmed Ali Sevki Beyefendi'. 335x20 cm. Folded. 1 p. In Ottoman script. Mehmed Said Pasha was an Ottoman monarchist senator statesman and editor of the Turkish newspaper Jerid-i-Havadis. He supported the CUP the political party which came to power after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. His origin comes from 'Sebazâde family' from Ankara. He became first secretary to Sultan Abdul Hamid II shortly after the Sultan's accession and is said to have contributed to the realizations of his majesty's design of concentrating power in his own hands; later he became successively minister of the interior and then governor of Bursa reaching the high post of grand vizier in 1879. He was grand vizier seven more times under Abdul Hamid II and once under his successor Mehmed V. He was known for his opposition to the extension of foreign influence in Turkey. n 1896 he took refuge at the British embassy in Constantinople and though then assured of his personal liberty and safety remained practically a prisoner in his own house. He came into temporary prominence again during the revolution of 1908. On 22 July he succeeded Mehmed Ferid Pasha as grand vizier but on the 6 August was replaced by the more liberal Kâmil Pasha at the insistence of the Young Turks. Also during 1908 Mehmed Said Pasha bought the famed Istanbul arcade in the Beyoglu Pera district today known as Çiçek Pasaji "Flower Passage". The modern name became common in the 1940s; during Mehmed Said Pasha's ownership in the 1900s and 1910s the arcade was known as Sait Pasa Pasaji "Said Pasha Passage". During the Italian crisis in 1911-12 he was again called to the premiership. He was again removed from power by the Savior Officers who backed the Freedom and Accord Party Liberal Union against the Committee of Union and Progress and replaced by a new cabinet supported by the Officers and the Freedom and Accord Party. The CUP would return to power however the next year after the Ottoman coup d'état of 1913. Source: Wikipedia. Seven lines on special paper with watermark 'Joynson Superfine'. Partly uncut and untrimmed. Hilye-i Hakanî. AH: 1307 = AD: 1890. The term hilya denotes both a visual form in Ottoman art and a religious genre of Ottoman Turkish literature each dealing with the physical description of Muhammad. Hilya literally means "ornament". They originate with the discipline of shama'il the study of Muhammad's appearance and character based on hadith accounts most notably Tirmidhi's al-Shama'il al-Muhamadiyyah wa al-Khasa'il al-Mustafawiyyah "The Sublime Characteristics of Muhammad". In Ottoman-era folk Islam there was a belief that reading and possessing Muhammad's description protects the person from trouble in this world and the next it became customary to carry such descriptions rendered in fine calligraphy and illuminated as amulets. In 17th-century Ottoman Turkey hilyes developed into an art form with a standard layout often framed and used as a wall decoration. Later hilyes were also written for the first four Caliphs the companions of Muhammad Muhammad's grandchildren Hasan and Hussein and Islamic saints walis. Mehmed Hakani Beg's 'Hilye' is one of the first example of the 'hilye' literature in the Turkish / Ottoman world. Özege 7631.; Not in TBTK It has earlier and later editions. <br/> <br/> N. p. 1874141678Turkey: 1874-86. Constantinople to Vienna Fascinating group of documents relating to Baron Maurice de Hirsch's concessions to build and operate the Ottoman Empire's railway lines from Constantinople to Vienna dating to the time the agreements were revised 1872 to when he was seeking to extricate himself 1887: 1. Covering letter to the annotated Actes 1874 document addressed to Baron Hirsch 1887 2. Actes 1874 covering the revised 1872 agreements annotated in 1887 for Baron Hirsch 3. Further amendments from the Ottoman Minister of Works for Hirsch c1887-88 4. Agreement to advance funds to the Sublime Porte to finance a military response to Bulgarian annexation of Eastern Rumelia 1885-86 The Ottoman rail network was constructed to boost trade maintain imperial control and facilitate Hajj and relied to a great extent on foreign private finance and expertise. First ventures in the 1860s included the Chernovoda to Constanza line connecting the Danube to the Black Sea and the Rustchuk to Varna line taking cargo to the Danube and Black Sea. The latter built by a British group was owned by the Rustchuk-Varna Railway Company under a 99 year concession which leased it in 1873 to Austrian banker Baron Maurice de Hirsch 1831-1896. In 1869 the Porte granted its most important concession to Hirsch to build 2 500 km of main and branch lines connecting Constantinople and Vienna; and in 1870 Hirsch founded the Societe Imperiale des Chemins de Fer de la Turquie d'Europe to build the lines and Compagnie pour l'exploitation des Chemins de Fer de la Turquie d'Europe to operate them. The venture was financed by the Turkenlose 3% Turkish Lottery Bond designed by Hirsch himself and German and Austrian bank loans. Over the 99 year concession Societe Imperial would receive 14000 francs rent per completed kilometre from the Porte and 8000 from the Compagnie. Grand Vizir Mehmed Emin Ali Paca 1815-71 a moderniser who wanted closer ties with Western Europe signed the agreement for the Porte. However he died in 1871 and his successor Mahmoud Nedim Paça 1818-83 whose appointment was influenced by General Nikolai Ignatieff Russia's ambassador at Constantinople preferred a link with Russia via Romania. Mahmoud Paca's efforts to cancel the concession were however unsuccessful due partly to Hirsch's appointment of Ralph Earle former British MP and secretary to Lord Beaconsfield who renegotiated the agreements signed off on 18 May 1872 item 2. By 1872 four disconnected lines "stumps" had been built and the Turkenlose had not raised sufficient funds. Under the new agreements the Porte took back the building concession including the most difficult and costly parts in the process reducing the distance to 1250km with the Societe Imperial as its contractor and cutting the Compagnie's concession from 99 to 50 years. Small archive of original documentation as above. Overall in very good condition. unknown

In Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 15 p. Restored spine by special tape chippings on extremities of the front cover uncut pages. Overall a good copy. The first and only edition of this epic poem written in memory of Turkish Unionist Captain Ilyas from Trabzon one of the first to fall when the sultan's supporters opened fire at the bridgehead in Galata Istanbul during the outbreak of the March 31 Incident. The poem which can also be regarded as an elegy for the Captain contains severe accusations against Sultan Abdulhamid II. The book was published by the Mesveret Printing House sharing its name with the Unionist and anti-sultan newspaper that had been published in Trabzon since the 1890s. It was written in 66 verses using an 11-syllable meter. The identity behind the pen name "Maçka Sairi" which appears at the end of the poem remains undetermined. He was likely a member of the Mesveret newspaper staff a close acquaintance of Captain Ilyas and a staunch opponent of Sultan Abdülhamid as well as a supporter of the Committee of Union and Progress. According to historical sources Captain Ilyas from Trabzon was the first person killed during the March 31 Incident. Due to this significant distinction an extensive poem was composed in his honor. While detailed information about Captain Ilyas is scarce it is believed that he was either a native of Trabzon or became affiliated with Mesveret while serving there. He was likely an Ottoman soldier who shared the same political views as the poem's author. Özege 25512.
