Conquest Cross Black with a note possibly written in Black's hand in ink on front pastedown and reading thus: J. C. C. Black H of R 53 Congress. From his old commander Gen Jos Wheeler. Note: This does not appear to be inscribed/signed by Wheeler as the handwriting differs markedly from Wheeler's. A very worn copy in green cloth with bowed covers hinges cracked but still holding though just barely spotting significant tears and wrinkles at upper spine. Some pages corner-creased. A resident of Augusta Georgia Black born in Stamping Ground Kentucky in 1842; died in Augusta in 1928 served as a Confederate soldier in the 9th Kentucky Cavalry in Georgia Tennessee and Kentucky. He was also a lawyer state legislator and US representative. General Wheeler born in Augusta Georgia attended West Point becoming one of the youngest Confederate generals at age 26. This is the rare 1897 FIRST PRINTING -- NOT the 1900 reprint with which it can easily be confused see BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE below. Sharp corners. Inner hinges are perfect. Previous owner's name on the front free endpaper. Text pages are creamy white fresh and crisp. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. With 27 illustrations mostly steel engraved portraits with tissue guards. This 1897 First Edition is bound in the original blue cloth which still has much of its new book gloss. SEE PHOTOS. A fair to good copy with heavy wear to the extremeties most pronounced at the spine ends. Both hinges are split and fragile but boards still attached. Front free endpaper detached otherwise all pages bound in and intact. Previous owners inscriptions to the first blank - one from 1881 and one from 1968 - otherwise an unmarked copy. Pages with age toning and a bit of foxing text clean and legible. 263 pp. indexed ahistory of the church's first 100 years. The names of the patronesses are printed: Mrs. Hartman Kuhn Mrs. Harry McCall Mrs. Charles Macalater Jr. Mrs. Francis Peters Mrs. George Blight and Mrs. Edward Merrell. With this is a light pink sheet 16 x 12 cm. folded and printed with the dates Mon. Jan. 15 Tues. Jan. 30 and Thurs. Feb. 8 and times. The music began at 9:00 the German Cotillion was at 12:00 and the balls ended at 3:00. The Dancing Assembly of Philadelphia also known as "The Assemblies" was established in the winter of 1748-49. Remaining an annual tradition into the 21st century the Assembly Ball is the oldest continuously operating subscription dance in the United States. To attend one either had to be a subscriber a person invited who pays a fee to attend or be sponsored by a subscriber. After the Civil War the Assemblies were held at the Academy of Music until 1904 when it moved to the Bellevue Stratford Hotel. Langhorne Wesley Wister 1834-1891 was the son of William Wister and Sarah Logan Fisher Wister and served as a Brev. Brig. Gen. in the Civil War. No year is given; 1872 1877 and 1883 are the years in which the calendar corresponds to the dates given between the end of the Civil War and Wister's death. De Garmo who taught dance at West Point enjoyed several editions of his book. This first edition copy belonged to Prof. Henry F. Laube who taught dance in the 1870's to Richmond's young ladies at Levy's Hall at the corner of Main and 11th Streets. Very nice Richmond Association item. Bound in brown pebbled leather with gilt titles and gilt embossed seals of New York City all edge gilting printed on heavy coated paper. Chips to the leather splitting at the joints rear inner hinge split and separating rear cover loose moisture residue affecting the rear hinge and last 16 sheets street maps leaving one to two inches of the map stuck to its facing page at the bind. Some tearing/chipping to some edges light sweating to a few preliminaries but most pages unaffected and clean. Still a solid working volume with most pages very good. . Fair. Hard. 1st. 1899.
