The first comprehensive account of 'Vaddi' Schultze and U-48; by August 1941 she had sunk no fewer than 56 merchant vessels and one corvette. Both U-boat and commander survived the war: U-48 was scrapped in 1945; Schultze died in 1987 at the age of 78. First published in Germany in 2007.

Very good. - Over 180 words typed on his 8-5/8 inch high by 7 inch wide "Commander Reserve Naval Construction Force / First Reserve Naval Construction Brigade" stationery. Rear Admiral Chiogioji responds to Rear Admiral Lewis Combs' letter congratulating him on his assuming command of the Brigade and also on the fund raising efforts towards the Memorial Fund. "Mel" Chiogioji replies that "I can assure you that I have taken on a very large challenge in assuming command of the Reserve Naval Construction Force from Paul Rosser." He goes on to explain that his main emphasis is "to fully integrate the active and reserve Seabees into a single unified organization." He thanks Admiral Combs for his support of the SMSA and hopes to be able to see him in Red Hook. Signed "Mel". Stapled to a retained copy of Rear Admiral Combs' letter with additional staple holes and a paper clip stain at top left. "Adm Cihiogioji" is boldly written in pencil at top right in another hand.</p><p>Rear Admiral Melvin H. "Mel" Chiogioji was born in Hiroshima Japan in 1939 and immigrated to the United States. He served 32 years in the Navy and Naval reserve in the Civil Engineer Corps including 6 years as a Rear Admiral. He took active command of the Second Naval Construction Brigade U.S. Atlantic Fleet being the first Reserve Admiral to be appointed to an active Naval Command. Mel was responsible for the crisis response forces during Operation Desert Storm in the Middle East and also of operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters.</p> (Silver Spring, Maryland), November 20, 1991.

Very good. - 40 words typed on a 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide sheet of Atlantic Monthly letterhead with a logo above the title and "Office of the Editor" printed in the top left corner. Signed "Ellery Sedgwick". There is some very light discoloration to the paper with several paper-clip marks to the top left corner & a tiny ink doodle at bottom right. Folded twice for mailing with a short tear at the horizontal fold. The paper-clip stains recur on the verso with some minor foxing. Very good. <p>Sedgwick replies to an inquiry from lecture tour manager James B. Pond of the Pond Bureau giving him the Tahiti address of James Norman Hall author of "Mutiny on the Bounty". "But I think Hall would love the platform about as well as the Devil loves Holy Water. He is doing very well at his books and I prophesy that you won't budge him."<p>American editor Ellery Sedgwick 1872-1960 came from a leading family of Stockbridge Mass. His ancestors established a tradition of literary achievement which was carried on by authors Catherine Maria Sedgwick and Ellery's brother Henry Dwight Sedgwick III. After graduating from Groton School and Harvard University Sedgwick taught at Groton for a couple of years and worked as an editor in New York City. He returned to Boston in 1909 to be editor of the Atlantic Monthly and president of the Atlantic Monthly Company. He was elected to the National Institute of Arts and letters in 1915. Gregory. 3.5" x 5" Printed on yellow stock with an elaborate background design. An online ancestry source reports that Kennard W. Gregory of Philadelphia lived from 1885 to 1951 and married Maud B. One of the South's early preservationists Alice Huger Smith collaborated with her father historian D. E. Huger Smith providing architectural drawings for two important publications: Twenty Drawings of the Pringle House 1914 and The Dwelling Houses of Charleston South Carolina. The contents are housed in original hinged 16- x 18-inch paper-covered boards with moderate to heavy smudging mostly in area of three slots for closure although ribbon or cardboard for these slots is now missing. Contents pages loose as intended include title page; "The Colonial House of Miles Brewton: With Some Account of its owners" a three-page essay by D. E. Huger Smith; all 20 prints which are lightly foxed with "holes" along edges of at least one print does not affect image itself and appears to be a thinning or defect in paper. ; .
