First edition, 8vo (212 x 125 mm), x, [1], 290pp., ownership inscription on upper margin of title "John S. V. Vernon. Novr. 1847.", some spotting of the text in places, orig. cloth, spine faded, head of spine and lower hinge partly frayed, uncut, gilt lettering on spine. Coulter was surgeon aboard the whaler "Stratford", which left London in October 1832, bound for the Pacific, by way of Cape Horn. He gives a detailed and lengthy account of the Marquesas, where he assumed native dress, was tattooed, and became involved in a tribal war. Other islands visited included the Falkland Islands, the Galapagos Islands, Chatham Island, the Gilberts, and the Tuamotu Archipelago. There were stops at the ports of South and North America, New Guinea and Melanesia. He made three stops at Tahiti and provides a general account of the island, as well as a detailed discussion of the English Missionaries there. Chapter V11 gives a description of fitting up a ship for sperm whaling, and gives an account of his first successful attempt at killing a whale. The "Stratford" returned to England in 1836. A picture of this book is a Sabin 17143. Howes C802. Cowan 145. Hill I, 70: 'The early materials on California and Melanesia are of importance'. A detailed and interesting account, with much on Pacific island life, the native peoples, the first chapter describes a whale chase. This copy has both the half title pages and the ads in each volume, often lacking.
Book is in excellent condition. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. 188 pages.

A large poster on stiff board 33 x 48 cm. white with black ink b.w. photo and aircraft English & mostly Chinese text time tables for departing air craft and schedule. OBSCURE ITEM LIMITED EDITION OF 500 This lovely period poster was printed September 30 1937 in a LIMITED EDITION OF 500 only copies per the colophon at the bottom of the poster. CONDITION: The poster is very clean and obscure. There are 2 very tiny mended closed tears in the right and lower margin else this is a very clean nice copy of a rare item. There is almost no surface soil and a small bump to lower right corner again none of this invades the text at all and can be matted out in a frame. The "CHINA CLIPPER" an early Pan-Am aircraft is shown flying over the city of San Francisco just above Fisherman's Wharf and other piers and North Beach Russian Hill the tower and downtown in the background. The text informs the Chinese community about the new air mail service drop off locations times of pickup and the like. Nicely executed. QUITE SCARCE . unknown
