192749720Paris: H. Floury 1927. Very good plus. First edition of this landmark biography of one of the icons of French Post-Impressionism and Art Nouveau lavishly illustrated and in the original wrappers and glassines. Maurice Joyant was both Toulouse-Lautrec's art dealer and close friend and confidant. He is notably responsible for convincing Toulouse-Lautrec's mother to give her collection of his art to the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec making it the best collection of his art in the world. This two-volume set is the first monograph on the artist who died in 1901 at the age of 36. Organized into paintings and more commercial works it offers a detailed overview of Toulouse-Lautrec's career and beautifully reproduces a great deal of his output. It is unusual to find them in their original glassines. 2 volumes 10.5'' x 8'' each. Original color pictorial wrappers. Original glassines. 1990014906A promotional poster "In Celebration of Maurice Sendak" depicting many beloved characters created and illustrated by children's book author Maurice Sendak 1928-2012 pen signed by the artist as "Maurice Sendak" at lower right. Also signed in stone as "Maurice Sendak / Feb. 90" at lower right. Near fine. 20" x 16". This colorful collage incorporates Maurice Sendak's most famous children's book characters from "Kenny's Window" 1956; "The Sign on Rosie's Door" 1960; "The Nutshell Library" 1962 comprised of "Pierre" "Alligators All Around" "Chicken Soup with Rice" and "One Was Johnny"; "Where the Wild Things Are" 1963; "In the Night Kitchen" 1970; and "Outside Over There" 1981. This poster was originally produced in 1990 in advance of the much anticipated republication of Sendak's earlier books. This is an example of one of the original more desirable promotional posters from 1990. Sendak's republication project was delayed and the poster image was eventually revised and printed in 2001 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the beginning of Sendak's career as a children's book artist. The 10-year delay prevented a wider distribution of the original poster from 1990. Maurice Sendak was an award-winning children's book illustrator and author. Always interested in design Sendak began his career by illustrating comic books and designing toy company shop windows. After writing and illustrating a series of incredibly popular children's books Sendak also created wrote and produced animated children's television programs. The poster may ship rolled in a tube. . 1862003597Paris: A. Levy Fils 1862. Quarter Morocco pebbled cloth boards. Very Good. Sand Maurice. 2 volumes 4to. 28 by 19 cm. viii 356 2 384 pp. 50 hand-colored plates featuring the stock characters of the improvisational Theatre Italienne such as Harlequino Arlechino Pulcinella Colombine Pagliaccio Pierrot Pantalon L'Apothicaire Le Notaire Scaramuccia Pasquariello etc. Nowadays these characters are most familiar to opera-goers thanks to the comical works of Donizetti Mascagni Busoni Mozart etc. Most of these characters grew out of the roaming theatrical troupes that originated in Italy of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The costume and basic personality of the character remained stable from one performance to the next but within those parameters the characters in a troupe usually following the broad contours of a story line would improvise bringing in buffonery perhaps relating to the events of the day the specific venue where they were appearing or whatever else might spring into their mind on the spur of the moment. In the eighteenth century the free form went into decline replaced by more scripted plays but its influence is very evident in the plays of Goldoni Moliere who worked well before the form vanished and besides the opera buffa early twentieth century Vaudeville ballet and more current comedy. Also the costume from the Theatre Italienne has never failed to excite enthusiasm and thus it is often celebrated in the decorative arts as perhaps most magnificently in porcelain beginning in the eighteenth century with Meissen Nymphenburg and many other makes. Today the style of Harlequin or Arlecchino continue to be emulated in clothes design with some regularity. This two volume celebration of the costume and characters of this theater was written by Maurice Sand who was the son of the novelist George Sand who wrote the preface. Maurice Sand 1823 -1889 was an accomplished illustrator and writer in his own right. Occasional soiling sometimes toning around perimeter outside of tissue guards which have survived remarkably well. Rubbing along joints and moderate wear of boards. Very handsome marbled painting of edges.

A. Levy Fils hardcover books
