Twelve Communist booklets from the library of Harry Hay with his marginalia and underlining

Twelve booklets from the library of Communist Party activist turned gay liberation pioneer Harry Hay who was central to the founding of the Mattachine Society and the Radical Faeries. All are paperbacks generally in Very Good condition. All contain Hay's underlining and/or marginal bracketing always very neat and precise often revealing an engaged educated reader in broad agreement with most points but unafraid to challenge orthodoxies. Eight of the booklets also contain Hay's marginalia. They are as follows: 1. Stalin Joseph. Marxism and Linguistics Four pages contain Hay's marginal notes on the various points Stalin makes on linguistics adding newer research Stalin was likely unaware of re: Native Americans. 2.Zhdanov Andrei. Essays on Literature Philosophy and Music. Rear wrap missing corner. Marginal notes on a single page about the history of music. 3. Lewis John. Marxism and Modern Idealism. Nine pages of penciled notes by Hay including a surprisingly frank page-long argument that Marxism is outdated and badly in need of updating for the 20th century. 4. Cornforth Maurice.Dialectical Materialism and Science. Contain Hay's note on a single page "In the case of 'gays'- This could be considered an additional confirmation of Pavlov's hypothesis of 'conditioning.'" 5. Cornforth Maurice. Materialism and the Dialectical Method. Hay's notes written on erratum and in margin of p. 74 "And this happy illusion stood-- until the cracking of DNA." 6. Stalin Joseph. Economic Problems of Socialism in the U.S.S.R. Staining to a few pages. One page of marginalia plus a laid-in handwritten five-page draft of a letter to Maurice Doob about the historical development of capitalism; toned and creased. 7.Rothstein Andrew. Anglo-Soviet Journal Summer 1951. Volume XII No. 2. Marginalia in an article on archaeology. 8. Pritt D.N. At the Moscow Trial. Hay wrote "see page 10" on front wrap. Folio original half cloth over pictorial boards pictorial endpapers illustrated. In good condition with rubbing to the boards and light toning throughout. Maurice Sendak author of Where the Wild Things Are is often hailed as â€œthe Picasso of childrenâ€™s books.â€ He has produced more than 85 books which have populated childrenâ€™s imaginations for years. For his contributions to childrenâ€™s literature Sendak received the third biennial Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration in 1970 one of two inaugural Astrid Lindgren Memorial Awards in 2003 and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal from the professional childrenâ€™s librarians in 1983. An exceptional association linking these two giants of children's literature. Based on a story de Brunhoff's wife created for their children The Story of Babar was born. It is the tale of a young elephant who escapes a hunter in his native jungle and comes to appreciate the civilization and fine things of the big city. He later returns to the jungle where he is crowned King of the Elephant Kingdom for the wisdom and civility he has gained in his travels. The book enjoyed immediate success upon publication and de Brunhoff went on to publish six more stories in the series before his death in 1937. His son Laurent de Brunhoff carried on the series and it was made into an animated television series in Canada which ran a total of 65 episodes between 1889 and 1991. "Like an extravagant piece of poetry the interplay between few words and many pictures commonly called the picture book is a difficult exquisite and most easily collapsible form that few have mastered.Jean de Brunhoff was a master of this form. Sand Maurice. 2 volumes 4to. 28 by 19 cm. viii 356 2 384 pp. 50 hand-colored plates featuring the stock characters of the improvisational Theatre Italienne such as Harlequino Arlechino Pulcinella Colombine Pagliaccio Pierrot Pantalon L'Apothicaire Le Notaire Scaramuccia Pasquariello etc. Nowadays these characters are most familiar to opera-goers thanks to the comical works of Donizetti Mascagni Busoni Mozart etc. Most of these characters grew out of the roaming theatrical troupes that originated in Italy of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The costume and basic personality of the character remained stable from one performance to the next but within those parameters the characters in a troupe usually following the broad contours of a story line would improvise bringing in buffonery perhaps relating to the events of the day the specific venue where they were appearing or whatever else might spring into their mind on the spur of the moment. In the eighteenth century the free form went into decline replaced by more scripted plays but its influence is very evident in the plays of Goldoni Moliere who worked well before the form vanished and besides the opera buffa early twentieth century Vaudeville ballet and more current comedy. Also the costume from the Theatre Italienne has never failed to excite enthusiasm and thus it is often celebrated in the decorative arts as perhaps most magnificently in porcelain beginning in the eighteenth century with Meissen Nymphenburg and many other makes. Today the style of Harlequin or Arlecchino continue to be emulated in clothes design with some regularity. This two volume celebration of the costume and characters of this theater was written by Maurice Sand who was the son of the novelist George Sand who wrote the preface. Maurice Sand 1823 -1889 was an accomplished illustrator and writer in his own right. Occasional soiling sometimes toning around perimeter outside of tissue guards which have survived remarkably well. Rubbing along joints and moderate wear of boards. Very handsome marbled painting of edges. A. Levy Fils hardcover books
