1939144331939. Archive of six large original World War II-era maps used by a United States Army soldier in the European Theater of Operations during the Allied liberation of Europe. Lithographed maps various issuers 1938-1939 wartime use 1944-1945.

Beyond their immediate tactical utility these maps occupy a pivotal geopolitical moment. The Czech sheets document territories liberated by American forces in May 1945 particularly around Plzeň which marked the effective western limit of U.S. advance before demarcation lines were fixed with Soviet forces. Within months these same regions fell firmly within the Soviet sphere of influence formalized through postwar agreements and culminating in the 1948 Communist coup in Czechoslovakia. Cartographically borders administrative divisions and place names shifted to reflect the new socialist state while subsequent Eastern Bloc map production emphasized different political geographies aligned with Moscow. Thus these pre-Communist and German-printed sheets capture a fleeting interstice: cities momentarily under American military administration before incorporation into the Soviet Eastern Bloc. The 1938 promotional map of Czechoslovakia preserves the nation's pre-Munich territorial identity prior to its partition under Nazi pressure while the 1939 Hamburg map reflects the industrial heartland of the Third Reich before Allied devastation and Germany's eventual division into East and West. In this sense the archive charts not only wartime movement but the rapid redrawing of Europe's political landscape-where American operational cartography was almost immediately superseded by Cold War boundary-making. Sizes range from 19" x 24" to 34" x 22". The archive comprises detailed city and regional maps of western Czechoslovakia-Město Teplá 19" x 24" Plzeň Sheet 4151 24" x 19" black and white with green overlay Horšovský Týn Sheet 4150 24" x 19" and Kralovice Sheet 4051-together with a large 1938 promotional map of Czechoslovakia 34" x 22" and a 1939 German-printed map of Hamburg 28" x 24". All are original period printings retained by the soldier following his service. Good overall with expected wartime folds creasing and moderate wrinkling from field use and storage; no significant losses observed. A rare and materially resonant survival of Allied operational maps that document both the liberation of Central Europe and the swift geopolitical transformation that consigned much of that terrain to the Soviet Eastern Bloc rendering these sheets artifacts of a brief and transitional military presence. unknown

1902220266Japan. No date. Circa1902. Two very attractive colour folded manuscript maps one showing China and the other Korea.

Map of China: Watercolour map 48 x 63.5cm. Closed tear now professionally repaired.

Map of Korea: Finely detailed watercolour map a few tiny holes very neatly repaired on the verso with archival washi. 33 x 24.5cm Two delicate hand-painted maps one of China and one of Korea produced by a Japanese student cartographer named Koike Tokushige 小池徳重.

The undated map of China appears to have been produced in the first five years of the twentieth century: a time when Japan had recently colonized Taiwan and when Japanese economic and political interest in the region was rapidly expanding. The inscription on the map suggests that it was a third year college project. But the high level of detail suggests that the artist had considerable experience of map making. The map of China shows the main provinces rivers major transport routes the Great Wall and the location of key cities although the names of the cities are not included. It also shows outlines of the Korean Peninsula Taiwan and the Japanese island of Kyushu but not the rest of Japan.

The map of Korea is more detailed. It provides an accurate outline of the Korean Peninsula with careful hatching indicating changes in elevation. Rivers and major road routes are shown on the map and the locations of major towns are marked though only Busan and Incheon are named. Dotted lines show coastal sea routes and routes between Kyushu and Busan and between Incheon and China. The map shows the Gyeongin railway line between Seoul and Incheon which was completed in 1899 and route of the Gyeongbu railway line between Busan and Seoul whose construction started from both ends in 1901. But the map depicts only small sections of this line close to Seoul and Busan as being completed with the rest more lightly outlined to show the projected route implying that the map was drawn around 1901-1902 and certainly before the Gyongbu line was opened in 1904.

Inserted text gives the land area and population of Korea. Rather strangely though the figure given for the Korean population is vastly underestimated. Ikeda gives this as 5.7 million when in fact at that time is was around 18 million. . unknown

191974907Chicago: Automobile Blue Book Publishing 1919 & 1921. Vol. 8; Tall octavo. 776 pp. including numerous inserts maps photographic illustrations. Complete. Publisher's flexible blue cloth with gilt cover lettering. Expertly rebacked retaining the original spine. Ver good.Vol. 9; Tall octavo. 848 pp. including numerous inserts maps photographic illustrations. Complete but for the folding map at the rear often missing as they were used. The map is reproduced in smaller segments on pp. 2-21. Publisher's flexible blue cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering. Some creases and general rubbing but a good complete copy.Between these two books the entire West Coast is covered. Between them they detail 1783 driving routes across the arid west. These are exhaustive and comprehensive guides to early car touring in California and the West. With such instructions as 'turn left after the wooden bridge" we can infer that car travel in 1920 was a difficult proposition at best. There is an illustrated chapter on Yosemite with a full page map and five pages of texts with illustrations. While "Official Automobile Blue Books" are not rare one usually finds the guides for New York or the Midwest with Vol. 8 California and Vol. 9 Oregon and Washington rarely appearing on the market. Chances are that these particular volumes were just generally used to oblivion as California has always been the most car-friendly state in the Union and the Pacific Northwest was by and large empty of people.
