188673172s. l. Grenoble: Club alpin français 1886. Fine. Club alpin français s. l. Grenoble 1886 27.50 x 21 cm relié The rare first edition produced by the Club alpin français de l'Isère. Copy number: No. 55. On the title page mention of Album No. 1. It is likely that this notion of first album refers to a project by the Club alpin français for each section Dauphiné Savoie Haute Savoie Vosges. However we find in the catalogues of the Bibliothèque Nationale other albums noted as number 1 of the Isère section but which are entitled ""Chartreuse"" and ""Grandes-Rousses Sept-Laux Belledonne""; these two other albums also contain 50 photographs like ours. These albums have a distinctly artisanal character and do not constitute a printed edition in the classical sense they were made by and for the Club. No printer's name is found anywhere. The number of copies was therefore certainly very limited and intended for a few members and institutions and not for the general public. Contemporary half chocolate shagreen binding with corners. Spine with raised bands decorated with 3 ornaments gilt titles. Red edges. Rubbing to head and tail caps edges and corners. After a few leaves intended for descriptions of the photographs 50 mounted card plates on tabs with 50 photographs pasted down 9.5x14cm with a number and caption. Stamp on title page: Club alpin français section de l'Isère Grenoble. The Club alpin français was founded in 1874 with a center in Paris. Its mission was to introduce the mountains through practice and knowledge by promoting scientific work mountaineering hiking. Each section would distribute numerous periodicals. The Club alpin would become a sports federation in 1996. The photographs taken seek to give the most faithful representation possible of the mountains in Isère with views of peaks gorges waterfalls bridges tunnels hermitages roads lakes. This is one of the first photographic missions on the mountains. High-contrast silver prints in very fine condition. Club alpin français hardcover

Some titles represented include a special edition of the Waverly Novels an 1874 prospectus for Scientific American Demorest's Family Magazine with a portrait of Nellie Bly Mrs. Eddy: The Biography of a Virginal Mind with much on attempts to suppress the book War and Peace The Cowell Press edition of Joyce's Chamber Music. Also included is a solicitation slip to update a Who's Who in New York entry for Frederick Mitchell Munroe and two event ads one for a talk by Mary French Field and another ad for The Broome St. Tabernacle. A collection of approximately 80 gift books and gift cards with fringe bindings bound in paper wrappers with chromolithograph images many over gilt backgrounds the majority of them very good with occasional condition issues including worn fringe a few with water stains and chipping and loss to spines. The collection includes approximately 36 books i. e. more than 4 pages. Many with original printed paper folders and one in the original clamshell box. Accompanied by an assortment of 45 fringed cards for holidays birthdays and for mourning. A few titles duplicated but under different imprints. The use of silk fringe in the binding of gift books was a short-lived fad at the end of the 19th century. This collection serves as an excellent survey of this publishing phenomenon. 1868138647New York: G.W. & C.B. Colton 1868. Rare 19th century printing of Colton's map of Florida. One page the lithographed map shows a detailed view of the state of Florida with an inset of the southern portion and the Keys. In near fine condition. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 35.5 inches by 25.5 inches. In 1846 Colton published Colton’s Map of the United States of America British Possessions . . . his first venture into the wall map business. This work would be issued until 1884 and was the first of several successful wall maps issued by the firm including collaborative works with D.G. Johnson. From the 1840s to 1855 the firm focused on the production of railroad maps. Later it published a number of Civil War maps. In 1855 Colton finally issued his first atlas Colton’s Atlas of the World issued in two volumes in 1855 and 1856 but later in 1857 the work was reduced to a single volume under the title of Colton’s General Atlas which was published in largely the same format until 1888. It is in this work that George Woolworth G. W. Colton’s name appears for the first time. Born in 1827 and lacking formal training as a mapmaker G. W. joined his father’s business and would later help it to thrive. His brother Charles B. C. B. Colton would also join the firm. Beginning in 1859 the General Atlas gives credit to Johnson & Browning a credit which disappears after 1860 when Johnson & Browning launched their own atlas venture Johnson’s New Illustrated Steel Plate Family Atlas . . .which bears Colton’s name as the publisher in the 1860 and 1861 editions. The firm continued until the late 1890s when it merged with a competitor and then ceased to trade under the name Colton. G.W. & C.B. Colton unknown

18870082231887. Very Good . 1 printed commission form naming Joseph H. LeFevre a notary public dated 30 March 1887 and signed by Gov. James A. Beaver and Charles W. Stone Secretary of Pennsylvania. the form is filled in in an attractive hand with a large gilt seal of Pennsylvania. Attached is a small form indicating that it was recorded in Adams Co. on 1 April 1887 with a smaller gilt seal of the Adams Co. Recorder's Office and the signature of the county recorder I. S. Stonesifer. Israel S. Stonesifer 1839-1928 served in the 165th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. In addition to serving as county recorder he was assistant superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park. James A. Beaver 1837-1914 served during the Civil War as lt. col. of the 45th Pa. volunteers and then as colonel of the 148th Pa. volunteers being wounded several times and eventually losing a leg. He served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891 and from 1895 to his death in 1914 sat on the state Superior Court. Charles W. Stone 1843-1912 was in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives 1870-1871; in the Pennsylvania State Senate 1877-1878; Lieut. Gov. 1879-1883; and was secretary of Pennsylvania 1887-1890 when he was elected to represent the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. In Very Good Condition: upper edge slightly rubbed and just starting to separate at folds; otherwise clean and solid. unknown
