Fine. s. d. 1672-1674 24 x 34 cm relié Complete autograph manuscript of 106 pages entitled: Mémoire de la construction et agrèz d'une galère ordinaire avec l'explication des termes l'usage des manuvres et de toutes les parties qui composent le corps de la galère et son armement. Penned in a neat unrubricated hand with occasional marginal notes in another hand. Contemporary full vellum binding lightly soiled with minor wear smooth spine without lettering. A major and invaluable manuscript chronicling the revival of the French galley fleet written by the most influential galley shipwright of his time: Jean-Baptiste Chabert. We have identified only two other manuscripts bearing this same title: one belonged to Commander Noël Fourquin a master mariner and specialist in nautical lexicography; the other was owned by Louis-Philippe himself. The latter is listed under no. 445 in the catalogue of the sale of his Palais-Royal and Neuilly libraries held in December 1852 and bears a binding identical to ours. This significant manuscript can be attributed to Jean-Baptiste Chabert a Marseille-based galley shipbuilder. Jan Fennis in his work Trésor du langage des galères 1995 relays this attribution made by Jacques Humbert La Galère du XVIIIe siècle who passed the manuscript on to Commander Fourquin: Il nous paraît que cette uvre est celle d'un constructeur de galères travaillant à Marseille car il est question de l'arsenal de cette ville dans le texte. Il nous semble qu'on pourrait assez raisonnablement l'attribuer à Jean-Baptiste Chabert. Jean-Baptiste Chabert was part of a Marseille dynasty of galley builders whose activity dated back to the mid-17th century. He was involved in the construction of the remarkable flotilla on the Grand Canal of Versailles built in Marseille from 1681 onward. In 1682 he was appointed professor at the shipbuilding school in Marseille where officers lieutenants and sub-lieutenants of the galley corps were trained and in 1690 he was awarded the brevet of premier maître constructeur des galères royales. In a letter addressed to the presidents of the parlements dated 11 April 1662 Colbert writes: Le Roi m'a commandé de vous écrire ces lignes de sa part pour vous dire que Sa Majesté désirant rétablir le corps des galères et en fortifier la chiourme par toutes sortes de moyens est que vous teniez la main à ce que votre compagnie y condamne le plus grand nombre de coupables qu'il se pourra et que l'on convertisse même la peine de mort en celle des galères. This letter makes it possible to date the manuscript to around 16721674 confirmed by the author's mention in the opening pages of the nationalisation of the galley fleet: Il faut savoir que le roi a l'économie de ses galères depuis dix à douze ans les capitaines étant auparavant propriétaires du corps et agrès des galères. This dating is also supported by a note in the margin of Commander Fourquins copy reading 1672-74. The text then immediately refers to Monsieur Nicolas Arnoul intendant des galères de France: Du depuis Monsieur Arnoul . a fait construire à Marseille un arsenal très magnifique dans lequel il y a toute sorte de manufactures pour fournir les choses nécessaires pour armer les galères. The construction of the Marseille arsenal took place in three phases between 1665 and 1690 though Arnoul died in 1674. Chabert begins his treatise by listing the various types of galleys: ordinaire Patronne Capitane and Realle. While distinguished by size the author does not dwell on their dimensions reflecting the culture of secrecy surrounding naval construction at the time. He then briefly discusses the state of the galley fleet Louis XIVs renewed interest in these vessels and how the king managed to increase their numberand fill them with convictsover the past ten years. 160300JT20NParis France 1603. On offer is an ancient very interesting medieval French document that ends a 26 year long legal battle. Deliberated in Paris in 1603 the document ends with three affixed signatures of the members of a council formed in June of 1577. The document states the problems between various individuals and the resultant end with the status of revenues and properties. This document is written in middle-French that lists names of various noble families. Much is left unsaid but given the use of the language and mention of nobility this may possibility be an establishment of estates or other revenues. On offer is a simply superb ancient mid 17th Century manuscript book titled "Suitte du memorial on recueil de l'histoire de France Louis treizeime" an epic 750 page handwritten history of the reign of Louis XIII from the condemnation of his father's assassination in 1610 to his own death in 1643. The work written in what is likely a 16th Century French monastic or ecclesiastical style hand was created after the death of Louis XIII and in its writing shows the foundations laid for a clear path to domination of France by Louis XIV. The book appears to be an unpublished final manuscript prepared for publication as there are corrections and marginalia notes. The front pastedown boasts a contemporary Parisian ownership inscription to the top left and then centered below is the bookplate of John Smith Budgen Esq. The 23 x 16 cm. book has 377 hand numbered leaves with writing on both sides of the leaf for over 750 pages. The book is covered in 17th Century French calf and gilt is rubbed and worn including hinges stamped spine 'Histoire de France' in gilt six compartments. 16810001028EDINBURGH SCOTLAND. Very Good. 1681. Unbound. On offer is an excellent skin charter being a land grant from Charles II to well-noted jurist James Dalrymple 1st Viscount of Stair Scotland with mentions the Dukes of Rothes and Lauderdale who were also prominent Scotsmen. Dalrymple was famed not only for his legal judgments but also he was a prominent character in Scotland's history having been involved in the negotiations between Charles and the Scottish Parliament. This grant was given at Edinburgh on the 10th of December 1680 absent of seals. There is another note on the back of the parchment to say that the charter was written at Edinburgh on the second of March 1681 suggesting the deal was struck in December but that the charter was not actually drawn up until the next March. Historically the Charters falls squarely between the Restoration period and when he was prominent until his sympathy with the Covenanters at the time of the Scottish Test Act caused him to lose 1681 his appointment as judge. The note giving March as the date for the writing of the charter appears to be in the same hand as the charter itself. Dalyrymple was a fascinating Scotsman who found himself on one side or the other of the Scottish-English political scene but was well considered. Sir Walter Scott observe that the Viscount of Stair was fortunate in his descendants. "The family of Dalrymple produced within two centuries as many men of talent civil and military of literary political and professional eminence as any house in Scotland." Folded to a small 12mo. 16850002369England. Fair. 1685. On offer is an original fascinating though flawed historically significant ancient 1685 manuscript. Dated and signed February 10th 1685 handwritten a mere four days after the death of Charles II referencing the new king James II two months prior to his coronation at Westminster Abbey by and for the British Royal Postal Service being a Royal warrant and division of financial profits of the British post office to Prince George among other notables. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Whereas in pursuance of and according to a . Covenant and agreement I will part in accordance articles relating to the marriage and solemnized between our dearly beloved son in law Prince George hereditary of Denmark and our dearly beloved daughter Anne Princess of Denmark his wife for the selling of the yearly of 5000 pounds of lawful English money out of the and profit of the post office or general letter office of office of the post general and the yearly sum of 5000 pounds more of like money part of the 24000 pounds to pay ." Historians and researchers will agree this document superbly outlines the wheels of governance and greed patronage and politics will out as the new king doles out to his own and immediately showers those he favors with wealth. While the document has suffered in its 400 years having signs of old water damage chipping around the edges and someone's attempt at a repair with tape many many years ago the significance of the manuscript is divine given the year was monumentally important in British history: the death of Charles II; his brother Roman Catholic James Stuart Duke of York becomes King James II and his Coronation at Westminster Abbey; the Monmouth Rebellion; The Battle of Sedgemoor; the death of Monmouth and Elizabeth Gaunt who was burned at the stake at Tyburn for alleged complicity in the Rye House Plot and notably she is the last woman executed for political treason in England and much more. The last page with signatures is one of the more damaged and the top half in better shape but sadly the signatures are not legible as there is a one inch diameter fault likely from a seal. On 13 March 1689 Thomas Mercer the elder of Hawkhurst Kent Co. tanner gave to his oldest son Thomas Mercer the younger the estate called Waters with its house barns orchards gardens etc. in Hawkhurst Kent Co. England containing 40 acres; the estate called Hayesgate of 30 acres; and another of 10 acres. Signed by Thomas Mercer senior and the witnesses -- Sarah Mercer Ele Sharpe and John Ffoord. 16940001096ENTREVAUX FRANCE 1694. On offer is a superb manuscript letter dated 29th of September Entrevaux handwritten by the noted Captain de la Contardiere interesting letter on a variety of military subjects: the King's ordnances being stolen a Council of War a large number of maladies besetting the King's army issues with a particular Lieutenant Colonel in the Regiment etc. De la Contardiere is famous for his defense of Entrevaux in 1704. The historical background is fascinating: King Louis XIV of France having accepted the throne of Spain for his grandson Philippe of Anjou found himself in war against Austria England Holland and the Duchy of Savoy. These events are known as "The War of the Spanish Succession: 1701 to 1713". The army of the Duke of Savoy Victor-Amedee was mobilized to invade Provence. The garrisons of the forts of Entraunes and Rabbets in its possession were reinforced. The English fleet under Admiral Rook blocked Antibes preventing with the French reinforcements of the Le chevalier de Damas from returning to Entrevaux with artillery. Le chevalier de Blaignac with 1500 Savoyard troops and two fauconneaux small field guns went up the valley of Estéron and placed his seige at Entrevaux which was defended by a valorous soldier the Captain de la Contardiere a friend of Vauban the great expert on fortifications. The new fortifications which were not completely finished were to stand the test of fire on June 7 1704. The artillery of the fortress was not yet in place. The bourgeois garrison and militia had ten arquebuses with hooks in addition to the individual armament. The enemy army occupied the plateauxs of Pigière and Closes dominating Entrevaux. They did not have siege cannons as they were too heavy to be transferred onto the bad mountain lanes. On June 14 after one week of siege to relieve the pressure de la Contardiere decided to carry out a night attack which was a total success. A breach was opened in the palisade surrounding the Savoyard camp. The impetuous attack of the Entrevalais causes a rout of the enemies who although superior of number flew towards Seds. 8.5" x 7" overall VG. . Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Dated 27 March 1694 the document involves Richard Reynolds the younger a carpenter of Hawkhurst Kent Co. England and William Couchman clothier of Cranbrook Kent Co. and properties in Hawkhurst. Signed by Couchman with a seal and by witnesses Thomas Morten John Sharpe Josiah Colvill and Samuel Dunant. In Very Good Condition: light soiling primarily on outer sections. unknown
1700000819Boston Massachusetts MA 1700. On offer is a superb and important piece of Americana specifically a handwritten deed concerning the very important geographic area of Fort Warren which defends the harbor in Boston Massachusetts and has done so from 1861 through the end of World War II. To buffs of the Civil War it was also the location where the famous Union marching anthem 'John Brown' was written using a tune from an old Methodist camp song 'Glory Glory Hallelujah!' and signed by Isaac Addington who served on the Salem Witch Trial Grand Jury and Adam Winthrop the son of John Winthrop First Governor of Massachusetts. John Winthrop 1588-1649 is perhaps best remembered for the famous sermon in which he likened the Massachusetts Bay Colony to a 'city upon a hill' a model to the world of social and religious order." Ref: Wikipedia. This manuscript document is dated Boston 27 Dec 1700. Folded into thirds Calligraphic initials. SIGNED BY ADAM WINTHROP son of John Winthrop First Governor of Massachusetts and ISAAC ADDINGTON clerk of the Grand Jury during the Salem Witch Trials. This is the original deed referenced by Holmes Abiel 1763-1837. Cambridge : Hilliard and Brown 1829. from the Coll. Mass. HiM. Soc. iii. 299. which states: "In 1700 Adam conveyed the island to his son-in-law and daughter to be transmitted to their descendants. The Indenture handsomely written on parchment is now before me. It covenants and grants the island to "John Wainwright and to Ann his wife during the term of their natural lives and afterward to the use and behoof of the heires of their two body. begotten or to be begotten forever." The island was next owned by their son John Winthrop Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy In Harvard College; and next by his sons Hines and William of Cambridge lately deceased. James purchased of William his share and a few years since sold to the United States about five acres in two parcels at the east and west end of the island with a passage way rota the one to the other for the purpose of fortifications. On the west end has been erected Fort Warren which defends the entrance of the harbour." CONDITION: signatures are strong and legible majority of the deed legible though with age-wear sometimes serious rubbing and fading discoloration some holes; certainly not in the presumed fine condition when Abiel Holmes held the document in 1829 but certainly very presentable with the red wax seal still intact. This document is a wonderful tapestry comprised of the strands of early Colonial history. Inherited by his son Adam it links the famous Winthrop name from his namesake Grandfather Adam Winthrop 1548-1623 an English lawyer and famous Puritan reformer in the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods through his great grandson Professor John Winthrop who was intimately connected to Harvard University's early history. The document is also witnessed and signed by Isaac Addington the first Secretary of the Mass. Bay Colony from 1692 to 1714 who additionally served on the grand jury in the Salem witch trials. The trials famously resulted in the executions of 20 people 14 women 6 men. PROVENANCE: Most recently from a private collector the present condition suggests this deed has long been in private hands and not an institutional archive. While in the 1820s the deed was possibly present in the archives of the Mass Historical Society it did not remain in the archives long thereafter and entered less protected private circulation. That stated Mr. Jeremy B. Dibbell of the Massachusetts Historical Society has kindly confirmed that this document like others that have entered private hands is not the property of the Massachusetts Historical Society. . 16190011028Annapolis Maryland MD Usa: US Navy Doctor's Wife in Annapolis Maryland. Good. 1916-1927. Hardcover. On offer are two diaries written in the early years of the 20th century written by Gertrude Steele wife of Dr. John Murray Steele USN. Gertrude Steele was born in 1865 and passed away in 1931 at the age of 66. Her husband had graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Pennsylvania in 1875 and had immediately joined the U. S. Navy rising to the rank of Commander. They lived in Annapolis MD. Our informal research has not turned up any additional biographical information. The first diary dates from 1916. Her entries show that she enjoyed a good standard of living reflective of her husband's standing in the community. Her entries are replete with the names of her many friends and acquaintances: "An ideal spring day - washed and shopping - then I met Connie Johnston and walked around with her to Carolyn's - & there C&D were so cordial & made us stay to lunch - I enjoyed it very much " May 12; "Rae went to S>S with a little girl Jeffers and L & I went to see church. After tea we walked to College grounds and then came back in time to hear Mus " July 2; "I woke up from my day of pleasure putting in a full day today unpacking and selecting things " Sept 21; "John took me to Rosewood where Dr. Herring of State Lunacy Commission spoke - then we went to Hatties to spend the night - as she is giving Rae a birthday dinner - just ourselves - was lovely - ghosts and spooks and cake with black cats " Oct 31. The second diary is a 5-year diary covering the years 1923-1927. It includes the year that her husband died. It certainly shows that Steele had a wide social circle and that she was active in meeting and spending time with her friends. The diary is simply crammed with entries and margins were not off limits to her writing: "Busy as a bee - at 9 had to go to music lesson - J brought us some lobster salads for lunch - it was so good G & I went out to Hattie's was feeling badly " Feb 17 1923; "A heavy snow storm but John is going to sail on the "Allegheny" Feb 19 1924; "Kate called for me in Hatties car. Took us to lunch . M picked me up and George B and I and Flynn & M took lots of things out to the country. They are next to all night. J and I played " Mar 24 1923; "At 9: 30 A. M. John called . We all came quickly . Said he wanted a doctor . At 12: 30 he was gone " Dec 19 1927. Throughout the dairies there are newspaper clippings noting travels of individuals attendees at balls etc. These diaries paint an excellent picture of a woman's busy life in these early years of the 20th century. A social historian would find them simply packed with details of life among the more well-to-do members of her society. For a genealogist it is a rich trove of names and connections especially valuable as they are New England families where records are extensive. This is an excellent resource for a Women's Studies program as it very clearly shows the roles women played in that society at that time. Octavo imprimatur leaf title page dedication page pp 26 396; ii half-title to second volume 186; 45 bookseller's catalogue 3 pages the last page torn and repaired without loss. Fairly heavy browning and foxing on some pages throughout contemporary panelled calf rubbed and scuffed corners worn rebacked at some time with a new calf spine raised bands en extract from a bookseller's catalogue for this copy attached with sellotape to the rear endpaper. The front endpaper contains the armorial bookplate of Sir Edward William Watkin 1819-1901 Member of Parliament and railway entrepreneur; also with the signature of W. Fletcher Grappenhall Cheshire. John Ray was the compiler of these important travels. It is the first English translation of the Rauwolf who was a German physician botanist and traveller. His main notability arises from a trip he made through the Levant and Mesopotamia in 1573-75. The motive of the trip was to search for herbal medicine supplies. Shortly after he returned he published a set of new botanical descriptions with an herbarium. Later he published a general travel narrative about his visit. In addition to botanical investigations Rauwolff observed and recorded his impressions of the people customs and sights of the Levantine region; he was one of the first Europeans to describe the drinking of coffee.
