16841208481684. Rare autograph land grant signed by the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania William Penn as the first governor of Pennsylvania. One page script on vellum the document is dated June 4 1684 and grants a tract of land in the county of Philadelphia to one of the earliest Quaker colonists to settle in Philadelphia county John Longworthy. Signed by William Penn at the conclusion of the document. Retaining the paper seal. In very good condition. Rare. In 1677 a group of prominent Quakers that included Penn purchased the colonial province of West Jersey half of the current state of New Jersey and soon East Jersey in 1682. With the New Jersey foothold in place Penn pressed his case to extend the Quaker region. Whether from personal sympathy or political expediency to Penn's surprise the King granted an extraordinarily generous charter which made Penn the world's largest private non-royal landowner with over 45000 square miles. Penn first called the area "New Wales" then "Sylvania" Latin for "forests" or "woods" which King Charles II changed to "Pennsylvania" in honor of the elder Penn. Penn then traveled to America and while there he negotiated Pennsylvania's first land-purchase survey with the Lenape Indian tribe. Penn purchased the first tract of land under a white oak tree at Graystones on July 15 1682 and drawing heavily from John Locke drafted a charter of liberties for the settlement creating a political utopia guaranteeing free and fair trial by jury freedom of religion freedom from unjust imprisonment and free elections. hardcover books

Contemporary brown calf spine in six compartments with blind-ruled compartments and gilt fleurons remains of a manuscript title label. All edges speckled red binding skillfully restored. Tear to lower margin of title skillfully restored a few tiny stains. The work is divided into three parts: the first relates the establishment of the colony and its journey to Cayenne the second is a collection of observations on the 15 months spent there by the author and the last is concerned with the country's climate the fertility of the soil and the customs and dress of the indigenous peoples. A last part is made up of a Franco-Amerindian dictionary which is the very first appearance of a lexicon of the Galibi language. Some chapters also refer to Guadeloupe Barbados and Martinique. Chaplain to the 700 colonists of the expedition sent to Guyana on the 18th May 1652 Antoine Biet gives a precise account of the second attempt at colonization. The attempt failed and the hundred surviving colonists were forced to flee Cayenne for Surinam in January 1654 and from there to Barbados having suffered tropical illness and fierce resistance from the Galibi Indians. According to Boucher de La Richarderie no account other than Biet's sheds so much light on the natives of Guyana; he describes them in all their primitive simplicity. He remained marked in his style by his first trip to Italy in the company of his master Philippon whose engraver he became upon his return from Italy for Curieuses Recherches de plusieurs beaux morceaux d'ornements antiques et modernes tant dans la ville de Rome que autres lieux d'Italie. His work was collected and published by Jombert from 1741 under the general title of oeuvres d'architecture de Jean Lepautre. Daniel Rabel's flower book is one of the most beautiful sets of engravings of flowers ever published. Some of these fine engraved flower prints are additional ornated with various butterflies and insects. The style of the engraving is very similar to the 'de Bry' flower plates although Rabel's works is occasionally found to be bound to the works by Maria Sybilla Merian. The flower prints by Daniel Rabel can be regarded as one of the most beautiful and decorative sets of large engravings of flowers ever produced in that period. Plate 3 unknown

The front endpaper bears a label identifying this copy as from the cookery collection of John Hodgkin FLS. A scarce edition - an early note on the endpaper possibly by Hodgkin comments that it is not mentioned in the bibliographies of Drexel or Vicaire. John Hodgkin FLS was born in Birmingham in 1857 the son of John Eliot Hodgkin and Sarah Ransome. In 1881 he was living with his parents in Richmond Surrey and working as an analyst for a medical firm. In 1889 he married Grace Stock and they had three sons. Like his father John Hodgkin had a keen interest in bibliography. He assembled a notable collection of books on the subject of cookery some of which now form part of the Cookery Collection at Leeds University Library along with his extensive notes on the bibliography of cookery and housekeeping whilst others are at Wellcome. He died in 1930 after which his collection was sold and dispersed. The Trattato of Baldassarre Pisanelli doctor in Bologna and Rome died around 1587 had great success between the fifteenth and seventeenth century thanks to its simple structure and ease of consultation. Dedicated to Guglielmo Gonzaga Duke of Mantova and Monferrato the dietary treaty contains good eating tips and takes into account many foods present on the tables of the lords fruit vegetables aromatic herbs cereals and legumes meat fish milk and dairy products wine. The treatise lists the main characteristics of each food elettione the benefits the potential damages the remedies the grades the best consumption time etadi complessioni; in addition Pisanelli writes on the right pages a brief historia naturalis of each food with interesting curiosities on the use of food. Noteworthy are the observations inspired by a hierarchical view of society: the tripe is a type of food for working hard people young partridges have a damaging effect only on rustic people. Pork harms sensitive and lazy people but is suitable for people who fatigues a lot; the best way to eat it is roasted with spices.Porchette usually eaten with great curiosity should be avoided because harmful but if the pig is of considerable age it will be a great source of nourishment. The work is divided into distinct chapters the first being a theory of leveling in relation to the earth's surface those that follow being an application of this theory and practical examples of leveling. One finds there for example the way to bring water to Versailles through measurements despite differences in terrain. The last part concerns the measurement of the earth. Picard had been charged by the Académie des sciences to measure one degree of meridian. The result found by Picard was the most accurate found at that time and allowed science and notably Newton to pursue his work on universal gravitation whereas he had been hindered by imprecise and faulty measurements. Very handsome copy in unsigned master binding. The single species designates communion by bread or wine. It was in 1681 that Pierre Jurieu published his treatise on communion in a single species in the name of Protestantism. One year later Bossuet wrote a rigorous treatise proving by certain causes that the church practiced the Eucharist under one or two species without anyone ever thinking that the withdrawal of one or the other harmed the integrity of the sacrament. The author shows that there is nothing indispensable in the sacraments except what pertains to their substance; that thus one is not obliged to do in administering them everything that the Savior did in instituting them. The Treatise on Communion says Bayle ""appeared to me very delicate very spiritual and of a courtesy toward us that cannot be praised enough; tight judicious it is cleared of everything that does not bear on the question."" It nonetheless results that Bossuet was subsequently attacked by several Protestant writings and that there was in the 17th century a veritable quarrel around this practical question of the sacrament.
