First edition of Corbin's legal compilation of ordinances and judgments issued during the reign of Louis XIII of France from the library of General George Washington. Folio bound in full mottled calf morocco spine label lettered in gilt elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands double gilt ruling and scrolling to the front and rear panels gilt turn-ins and inner denelles marbled endpapers title page printed in red and black engraved vignette to the title page illustrated with numerous wood-engraved initials and headpieces. From the library of General George Washington with a notation to the title page "Formerly the property of Gen. Washington" and subsequently the Library of the New York Law Institute Special Collections early notation on title-page near gutter stamps. According to the Mount Vernon Library George Washington signed many books in his library in the upper corner of the title-page but not all of his books have signatures or bookplates. Upon Washington's death his library was left to his nephew Bushrod Washington. When Bushrod died the books and papers were passed to Bushrod's two nephews George Corbin Washington and John Augustine Washington II. In 1834 George Corbin sold the presidential papers and military focused books to the US government becoming part of the Library of Congress. In 1847 George Corbin sold 359 of Washington's remaining books to the rare book dealer Henry Stevens who sold the collection to the Boston Athenaeum. The other half of the original library inherited by John Augustine passed to his son in 1832 who later sold the nearly 300-volume collection at auction in 1876 scattering it to various private collectors and institutions. Corbin's compilation of the ordinances of Louis XIII of France was significant in the development of French legal literature and served as a valuable resource for understanding the legal context of early 17th-century France. 1685151905Boston n.d. 1685–1723. Rare late 17th to early 18th century autograph manuscript of a sermon or devotional essay in the hand of the "first American Evangelical" Puritan clergyman Cotton Mather. Duodecimo comprising two bifolia prepared from a folded and cut sheet of paper to a total of 8 pages penned in dark brown ink very densely written as is usual with Mather two columns with notes and glosses in the left column the text in sections I-VIII the numeral III apparently used twice several thousand words in all. An unusually lengthy manuscript likely written while Mather was assisting his father Increase as the preacher at the Second Church of Boston 1685–1723. Mather was one of the preeminent American intellectuals of the era. He was not simply a theologian and philosopher but was deeply interested in the sciences conducting experiments on inoculation against smallpox plant breeding meteorology and a wide variety of other topics in a broad range of disciplines. He was a member of the Royal Society of London in large part because of his botanical researches which were reported in his book Curiosa Americana. Although his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials has complicated his legacy he remains in many respects one of the most intellectually curious and progressive figures of colonial America. The text of the present manuscript is in large part a theological analysis of the implications of the Doctrine of the Divine Decree in which Mather speaks out against what he sees as the sophistry of the moral position "If all is predestined why should I make any effort for my salvation" This he refutes in detail in these pages with much apparatus and inspirational text ending his argument on the words "Methinks then we should long for heaven! Oh my companions if you would not long for Heaven I can foretell that there are more sorrows on earth to come upon you . Will you long to be where ye weary are at rest. But then Oh Lord how long how long how long!" With this ringing conclusion to the final page the text ends apparently complete. Given the small format of the manuscript it seems likely that it was used in delivering a sermon or homily. In near fine condition with scattered small areas of ink erosion noted. Housed in a custom modern cloth case and accompanied by a complete transcription of the text; with a letter dated September 29 1937 on New York Public Library stationery signed by the late Victor Paltsits Keeper of Mss. indicating that he authenticates the manuscript as in Mather's hand and a note signed by Louis Henry Cohn of House of Books regarding provenance. Bindings signed M. Lortic. An exceptional copy of the famous 1682 edition housed in a very elegant binding by Marcelin Lortic who succeeded his father Pierre-Marcellin Lortic - Baudelaire's binder. The first complete edition of the works of Molière edited by two of his close friends Vinot and the actor Charles Varlet de la Grange who was also his troupe’s secretary: “For this edition publishers used Molière’s manuscript texts more or less corrected by him either according to the needs of performances or publication. This means that the text of 1682 often differs slightly from the separate first editions and the collected edition of 1674.Despite this it is the text that has most often served as a source for the numerous later editions published right up to the present time” J. Le Petit Bibliographie des principales éditions originales.  According to Anaïs Bazin “It is in the Préface by Lagrange and Vinot placed at the beginning of the first edition of the Œuvres complètes de Molière 1682; there and nowhere else we still find today the only reliable and acceptable information — perhaps the only information and this conjecture is a serious one — that Molière wished to leave to the public concerning his fifty-one-year career!” Notes historiques sur la vie de Molière Techener 1851. This slightly excessive sentence nevertheless highlights the unique importance of these first biographical notes written by close friends of the greatest French dramatist. It also reveals numerous faults within the known versions of Molière’s final play and masterpiece Le Malade imaginaire printed after the author’s death. “This comedy is corrected from the author’s original manuscript and free of all the false additions and presumed scenes inserted in previous editions. And to highlight this declaration even further they take care to write at the beginning of two scenes in the first act that the text — actually the entire act — was not Molière’s in the previous editions and that they publish here the author’s original scenes.” In his bibliography Albert-Jean Guibert would conclude: “This edition must be regarded quite rightly as the most complete of the seventeenth-century editions. Contemporary full soft brown morocco a fanfare binding with the rare Duodo-type decoration: smooth spine gilt with six medallions each containing a flower gilt foliage border covers fully gilt with 24 medallions some emblematic sun heart acorn bouquet sheaf of wheat arms stamped in the centre edges gilt. Discreet restorations to joints corners and headcaps; upper and lower borders with minor wear to leather 0.5 cm; lacking ties; pinhole at head of spine. From the first title-leaf a wormhole in the lower margin extending through to the final leaves of the Fables of Aesop gradually diminishing. A magnificent copy of the utmost rarity. The singular decoration of this style of binding representing one of the pinnacles of the art of French bookbinding is today identified as Duodo after Pierre Duodo Venetian ambassador to Paris from 1594 to 1597. About 150 small volumes were uniformly bound for a portable library only part now known probably towards the end of his stay. It is unlikely he ever enjoyed these treasures which fell into oblivion for nearly two centuries. When they reappeared on the English market at the end of the eighteenth century they were mistakenly attributed to Marguerite de Valois an error that persisted until the 1920s. Although the name Duodo remains attached to this style of decoration another great collector commissioned similar bindings: Nicolas de Villars bishop of Agen. Duodos bindings are now well identified while those of Nicolas de Villars are considerably rarer on the market. While the spine here is very close to the Duodo examples with flowers and foliage borders though in a finer and denser design the covers show 24 medallions compared to only 14 on Duodo bindings and the tools employed are not limited to floral motifs but include a variety of emblems such as the sun and the heart. On offer is a simply superb ancient mid 17th Century manuscript book titled "Suitte du memorial on recueil de l'histoire de France Louis treizeime" an epic 750 page handwritten history of the reign of Louis XIII from the condemnation of his father's assassination in 1610 to his own death in 1643. The work written in what is likely a 16th Century French monastic or ecclesiastical style hand was created after the death of Louis XIII and in its writing shows the foundations laid for a clear path to domination of France by Louis XIV. The book appears to be an unpublished final manuscript prepared for publication as there are corrections and marginalia notes. The front pastedown boasts a contemporary Parisian ownership inscription to the top left and then centered below is the bookplate of John Smith Budgen Esq. The 23 x 16 cm. book has 377 hand numbered leaves with writing on both sides of the leaf for over 750 pages. The book is covered in 17th Century French calf and gilt is rubbed and worn including hinges stamped spine 'Histoire de France' in gilt six compartments. Dated and signed February 10th 1685 handwritten a mere four days after the death of Charles II referencing the new king James II two months prior to his coronation at Westminster Abbey by and for the British Royal Postal Service being a Royal warrant and division of financial profits of the British post office to Prince George among other notables. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Whereas in pursuance of and according to a . Covenant and agreement I will part in accordance articles relating to the marriage and solemnized between our dearly beloved son in law Prince George hereditary of Denmark and our dearly beloved daughter Anne Princess of Denmark his wife for the selling of the yearly of 5000 pounds of lawful English money out of the and profit of the post office or general letter office of office of the post general and the yearly sum of 5000 pounds more of like money part of the 24000 pounds to pay ." Historians and researchers will agree this document superbly outlines the wheels of governance and greed patronage and politics will out as the new king doles out to his own and immediately showers those he favors with wealth. While the document has suffered in its 400 years having signs of old water damage chipping around the edges and someone's attempt at a repair with tape many many years ago the significance of the manuscript is divine given the year was monumentally important in British history: the death of Charles II; his brother Roman Catholic James Stuart Duke of York becomes King James II and his Coronation at Westminster Abbey; the Monmouth Rebellion; The Battle of Sedgemoor; the death of Monmouth and Elizabeth Gaunt who was burned at the stake at Tyburn for alleged complicity in the Rye House Plot and notably she is the last woman executed for political treason in England and much more. The last page with signatures is one of the more damaged and the top half in better shape but sadly the signatures are not legible as there is a one inch diameter fault likely from a seal. A very fine copy in an elaborately decorated early 17th-century Italian armorial morocco binding with the arms of the Duke of Magenta Alfonso Brentano. The Panarion is a curious encyclopedia of mental illnesses viewed as immoral behavior and classified according to biblical vices and virtues. 16841208481684. Rare autograph land grant signed by the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania William Penn as the first governor of Pennsylvania. One page script on vellum the document is dated June 4 1684 and grants a tract of land in the county of Philadelphia to one of the earliest Quaker colonists to settle in Philadelphia county John Longworthy. Signed by William Penn at the conclusion of the document. Retaining the paper seal. In very good condition. Rare. In 1677 a group of prominent Quakers that included Penn purchased the colonial province of West Jersey half of the current state of New Jersey and soon East Jersey in 1682. With the New Jersey foothold in place Penn pressed his case to extend the Quaker region. Whether from personal sympathy or political expediency to Penn's surprise the King granted an extraordinarily generous charter which made Penn the world's largest private non-royal landowner with over 45000 square miles. Penn first called the area "New Wales" then "Sylvania" Latin for "forests" or "woods" which King Charles II changed to "Pennsylvania" in honor of the elder Penn. Penn then traveled to America and while there he negotiated Pennsylvania's first land-purchase survey with the Lenape Indian tribe. Penn purchased the first tract of land under a white oak tree at Graystones on July 15 1682 and drawing heavily from John Locke drafted a charter of liberties for the settlement creating a political utopia guaranteeing free and fair trial by jury freedom of religion freedom from unjust imprisonment and free elections. hardcover books

On offer is a superb and important piece of Americana specifically a handwritten deed concerning the very important geographic area of Fort Warren which defends the harbor in Boston Massachusetts and has done so from 1861 through the end of World War II. To buffs of the Civil War it was also the location where the famous Union marching anthem 'John Brown' was written using a tune from an old Methodist camp song 'Glory Glory Hallelujah!' and signed by Isaac Addington who served on the Salem Witch Trial Grand Jury and Adam Winthrop the son of John Winthrop First Governor of Massachusetts. John Winthrop 1588-1649 is perhaps best remembered for the famous sermon in which he likened the Massachusetts Bay Colony to a 'city upon a hill' a model to the world of social and religious order." Ref: Wikipedia. This manuscript document is dated Boston 27 Dec 1700. Folded into thirds Calligraphic initials. SIGNED BY ADAM WINTHROP son of John Winthrop First Governor of Massachusetts and ISAAC ADDINGTON clerk of the Grand Jury during the Salem Witch Trials. This is the original deed referenced by Holmes Abiel 1763-1837. Cambridge : Hilliard and Brown 1829. from the Coll. Mass. HiM. Soc. iii. 299. which states: "In 1700 Adam conveyed the island to his son-in-law and daughter to be transmitted to their descendants. The Indenture handsomely written on parchment is now before me. It covenants and grants the island to "John Wainwright and to Ann his wife during the term of their natural lives and afterward to the use and behoof of the heires of their two body. begotten or to be begotten forever." The island was next owned by their son John Winthrop Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy In Harvard College; and next by his sons Hines and William of Cambridge lately deceased. James purchased of William his share and a few years since sold to the United States about five acres in two parcels at the east and west end of the island with a passage way rota the one to the other for the purpose of fortifications. On the west end has been erected Fort Warren which defends the entrance of the harbour." CONDITION: signatures are strong and legible majority of the deed legible though with age-wear sometimes serious rubbing and fading discoloration some holes; certainly not in the presumed fine condition when Abiel Holmes held the document in 1829 but certainly very presentable with the red wax seal still intact. This document is a wonderful tapestry comprised of the strands of early Colonial history. Inherited by his son Adam it links the famous Winthrop name from his namesake Grandfather Adam Winthrop 1548-1623 an English lawyer and famous Puritan reformer in the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods through his great grandson Professor John Winthrop who was intimately connected to Harvard University's early history. The document is also witnessed and signed by Isaac Addington the first Secretary of the Mass. Bay Colony from 1692 to 1714 who additionally served on the grand jury in the Salem witch trials. The trials famously resulted in the executions of 20 people 14 women 6 men. PROVENANCE: Most recently from a private collector the present condition suggests this deed has long been in private hands and not an institutional archive. While in the 1820s the deed was possibly present in the archives of the Mass Historical Society it did not remain in the archives long thereafter and entered less protected private circulation. That stated Mr. Jeremy B. Dibbell of the Massachusetts Historical Society has kindly confirmed that this document like others that have entered private hands is not the property of the Massachusetts Historical Society. . Work decorated with headpieces and historiated initials. Contemporary full vellum binding smooth spine decorated at head with a pen-and-ink title almost faded. One corner slightly bumped title page skillfully restored at inner margin pale dampstain to lower margin on final gatherings. Bookplate of the Nordkirchen family pasted on front pastedown. Manuscript ownership inscription on title page with initials ""E. H. L."". Natural son of a conquistador and an Inca princess raised in two different cultures Garcilaso de la Vega 1539-1616 offers a unique vision of Inca civilization by rejecting a Euro-centric view. While in his Royal Commentary first published in France in 1633 de la Vega traced the history of the Inca rulers he here proposes an account of the conflicts that animated the Spanish colonists after their arrival in Peru. His aim is to convey the upheaval caused by these internecine wars both for the indigenous people and for the Spanish. In his address to the reader de la Vega explains that the Inca rulers had succeeded in founding an empire where ""Moral Political & Military Virtues"" reigned; the arrival of the colonists and the execution of Atahualpa - the last independent emperor - disrupts the established order and is seen as the expression of ""Ambition"" and ""Avarice"" of these ""new Hosts"". De la Vega presents these events in the form of a true epic seeking to show the reader ""the various effects in this History wonderfully entertaining & where the Author endeavors to make the principal ones among those who were the true Actors play their role on this Stage"". A continuation of his first major work on the History of the Incas Kings of Peru the History of the Civil Wars of the Spanish in the Indies offers the reader a vast panorama of Peruvian history in the few years following the conquest. In 1618 Juan de Solórzano Pereira wrote the king a petition to make him part of a book project on the West Indies. King Philip IV was seduced by the general idea of legally asserting once and for all the legitimacy of the Spanish possessions in America and financed the first book on justice but not the second on the forms of government which appeared in 1639. The author had been a judge in Lima since 1609 by Royal appointment. The Viceroy of Peru appointed him Governor of Huancavelica a mining outpost of key economic importance to Spain an office he was to fill during his eighteen years in Peru as well as Procurator to the Supreme Council of the Indies Real y supremo consejo de Indias. Pereira developed an extensive and detailed knowledge of Spanish jurisprudence in the West Indies studied numerous documents and ended up with a significant wealth of knowledge especially on the ancient customs of the indigenous peoples. The first part of the book is dedicated to studying the laws that allowed the attachment of the American possessions to the crown of Castille. Here the focus is the definitive legitimation of the Spanish possessions in America. The author then looks at the question of the Church and its relations with the Spanish crown as well as laws on government in general the administration of justice and finally the laws regulating relations with the indigenous peoples and territories. The importance of Pereiras work is to be found in his relentless effort to find the history and origin of each law. 1680 saw the publication of the famous collection of the laws of the Indies the Recopilacion de las leyes des las Indias but this could not replace the excellent work of Pereira who spent a long time studying the oldest laws as well as those of the Indies. In fact all the ancient laws and their indigenous origins disappeared from the collection of the laws of the Indies and Pereiras work would remain key for the history of the West Indies and Spanish Americas. Fine. s. d. 1672-1674 24 x 34 cm relié Complete autograph manuscript of 106 pages entitled: Mémoire de la construction et agrèz d'une galère ordinaire avec l'explication des termes l'usage des manuvres et de toutes les parties qui composent le corps de la galère et son armement. Penned in a neat unrubricated hand with occasional marginal notes in another hand. Contemporary full vellum binding lightly soiled with minor wear smooth spine without lettering. A major and invaluable manuscript chronicling the revival of the French galley fleet written by the most influential galley shipwright of his time: Jean-Baptiste Chabert. We have identified only two other manuscripts bearing this same title: one belonged to Commander Noël Fourquin a master mariner and specialist in nautical lexicography; the other was owned by Louis-Philippe himself. The latter is listed under no. 445 in the catalogue of the sale of his Palais-Royal and Neuilly libraries held in December 1852 and bears a binding identical to ours. This significant manuscript can be attributed to Jean-Baptiste Chabert a Marseille-based galley shipbuilder. Jan Fennis in his work Trésor du langage des galères 1995 relays this attribution made by Jacques Humbert La Galère du XVIIIe siècle who passed the manuscript on to Commander Fourquin: Il nous paraît que cette uvre est celle d'un constructeur de galères travaillant à Marseille car il est question de l'arsenal de cette ville dans le texte. Il nous semble qu'on pourrait assez raisonnablement l'attribuer à Jean-Baptiste Chabert. Jean-Baptiste Chabert was part of a Marseille dynasty of galley builders whose activity dated back to the mid-17th century. He was involved in the construction of the remarkable flotilla on the Grand Canal of Versailles built in Marseille from 1681 onward. In 1682 he was appointed professor at the shipbuilding school in Marseille where officers lieutenants and sub-lieutenants of the galley corps were trained and in 1690 he was awarded the brevet of premier maître constructeur des galères royales. In a letter addressed to the presidents of the parlements dated 11 April 1662 Colbert writes: Le Roi m'a commandé de vous écrire ces lignes de sa part pour vous dire que Sa Majesté désirant rétablir le corps des galères et en fortifier la chiourme par toutes sortes de moyens est que vous teniez la main à ce que votre compagnie y condamne le plus grand nombre de coupables qu'il se pourra et que l'on convertisse même la peine de mort en celle des galères. This letter makes it possible to date the manuscript to around 16721674 confirmed by the author's mention in the opening pages of the nationalisation of the galley fleet: Il faut savoir que le roi a l'économie de ses galères depuis dix à douze ans les capitaines étant auparavant propriétaires du corps et agrès des galères. This dating is also supported by a note in the margin of Commander Fourquins copy reading 1672-74. The text then immediately refers to Monsieur Nicolas Arnoul intendant des galères de France: Du depuis Monsieur Arnoul . a fait construire à Marseille un arsenal très magnifique dans lequel il y a toute sorte de manufactures pour fournir les choses nécessaires pour armer les galères. The construction of the Marseille arsenal took place in three phases between 1665 and 1690 though Arnoul died in 1674. Chabert begins his treatise by listing the various types of galleys: ordinaire Patronne Capitane and Realle. While distinguished by size the author does not dwell on their dimensions reflecting the culture of secrecy surrounding naval construction at the time. He then briefly discusses the state of the galley fleet Louis XIVs renewed interest in these vessels and how the king managed to increase their numberand fill them with convictsover the past ten years. When Louis XIV visited Marseille in 1660 no war fleet remained in the port: the galleys lay rotting in Toulon and on hardcover

A very rare copy of this classic of Medieval Jewish philosophy presenting the fears of Spanish Jews faced with two powerful religions Christianity and Islam. Written in 1140 in Arabic the Kuzari is couched in the form of a dialogue in five books. Charles Touati in his 1994 preface to the text summarizes the narrative thread of the work thus: «The king of the Khazars or Kuzari tormented by the religious question interrogates in turn a philosopher a Christian theologian and a Muslim one. Disappointed in their answers he feels he must turn to a learned man of the mocked and vilified minority a Rabbi who ends up convincing him at which the king converts to Judaism and continues his studies with the aid of this teacher.» This apologia allowed Juda Halevi to critique the appeal of philosophy Christianity and Islam for his contemporaries. According to him «philosophy denies all possibility of dialogue between Man and God and does not understand the religious phenomenon» ibid. Right from his starting point a proof of the existence of God he believes that we need only look to history and the revelation of God on Mount Sinai witnessed by thousands. Christianity and Islam are for him nothing but forgeries of Judaism: «they jeer at the humiliations and suffering of the Jews without realizing that they exalt in the founder of their own religions precisely that humiliation and suffering» ibid. The Kuzari is an emblematic text in the sense that it calls for the exiled community to return to Zion rather than submit. «It is better to leave everything and go back to Zion and there regain Divine favor instead of wearing ourselves out winning the favor of gentiles which in any case we will never have» ibid.
