Pair of rare original Russian cabinet photographs of the Imperial Russian music publisher and philanthropist founder of the Belyayev circle a society of musicians in Russia whose members included Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Alexander Glazunov and Anatoly Lyadov. 11 x 16.5 cm; 13 x 18 cm. <br><br />In 1885 Belyayev created the publishing house "M. P. Belaieff" in Leipzig to secure international copyright to Russian composers; until then international copyright did not extend to music published in Russia. Eventually he published over 2000 compositions by Russian composers the first of which was Glazunov's Overture on Greek Themes. The works published there were edited to a high standard and the elaborate and expensively produced color lithograph title pages rapily became his trademark and are highly prized by collectors today. unknown books

Illustrated advertisement card showing a photograph of African-American ragtime musician John William "Blind" Boone and his manager John Lange looking quite dapper in trench coats and hats. Boone rests his hand atop a cane while Lange somewhat surreptitiously holds onto his arm for the photo. Boone's left hand is tucked jauntily into a vest pocket. The text below the photograph is reprinted from the KANSAS CITY SUN of Dec. 5 1914. It reads: "The most astute dignified and successful manager of the race and the greatest living musical prodigy who have journeyed together in the Blind Boone Concert Company thirty-five years a record unsurpassed or equalled by any other company white or colored in America. Both are philanthropic generous and kind hearted to such a degree that they are loved by their race throughout the length and breadth of America." Blind Boone was the son of a former slave and a Union Army bugler born at the end of the Civil War. At the age of six a surgeon removed his eyes to relieve pressure on his brain during a fever. 1893List316Chicago 1893. Broadside 11 ¾ x 5 ½ inches. Very Good. John Hutchison patriarch and leader of the Hutchinson Family Band was hired by the World's Fair Committee to perform as one of the "Wonders of America." This broadsheet unrecorded is a souvenir of his performance from the fair in which he sang "Prophecy of Freedom" a ballad with suffragist overtones that he had written in 1867. The Hutchinson Family singers had enjoyed a long and successful career at the point of the 1893 exhibition beginning as one of the most successful acts of the 1840s. <br /> Their support of abolition women's rights temperance and workers' rights had limited their following somewhat and following the Civil War their appearances in large cities were generally limited to churches temperance meetings and women's suffrage rallies. By 1893 John Hutchinson was at the tail end of his career - he would die fifteen years later - but was welcomed by attendants. William Lloyd Garrison would describe John Hutchinson's singing as "directly and purposely subservient to the freedom welfare happiness and moral elevation of the people." <br /> <br /> The broadsheet introduces the song as " sung at his meetings held during the 'Woman's Congress Campaign' through Kansas. dedicated to the 'World's Fair Congresses' and sung by him during that period when prominence was given to the 'Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of Man' emphasizing the principle as a true method of restoring the unity of all good for the whole race of man." The Hutchinson Family Band embodied the ideals of the Second Great Awakening and this shows those ideals going strong at the dawn of the twentieth century. A well preserved example in very good condition with some light creases and normal tanning. Not recorded in OCLC. unknown books

Organizers hoped it would be "the world's first permanent festival site." But although the event drew over 200000 people it was not repeated due to multiple arrests and the displeasure of local authorities. The Stooges Jethro Tull Chicago and Brownsville Station were among the many featured performers Alice Cooper and Joe Cocker also named on this handbill did not perform due to contractual difficulties. Five engraved plates in first volume. Extremities rubbed but sound widely differing paper stocks within each volume result in isolated foxing or tanning associated with a particular number within a volume general title present only in the first volume otherwise very good. A curious and bibliographically elusive serial made up of twenty numbers per volume occasionally ranging from as little as 8- 12pp. per issue possibly issued in wrappers if so not present here or self-wrappers. Only the first volume includes a formal title and date and no explicit dates appear in the remainder - a situation mirrored in the entry in the BN catalogue where the existence of a 9th volume is noted. Only the first volume includes the engraved plates signed "Lesestre." The content consists exclusively of the lyrics to then current songs in the theatres and other performances occasionally presented in their dramatic context with notations of the publishers of the scores and identification of the writers and singers.
