1989160819Cologne Koln: N.p. 1989. Vintage poster for the 1989 dance performance choreographed by Louis Falco held at the Tanz-Forum der Oper der Stadt Köln on May 9 1989. Featuring music by Bruce Springsteen arranged by Hajo Stahl libretto by Falco and Kitty Troll and set costume and poster design by Jack Brusca. SIGNED and dated in the year of the production by Brusca.<br /> <br /> Louis Falco began his distinguished dance career in the late 1950s while in his late teens under Charles Weidman and José Limón. He would go on to perform with Flower Hujer Alvin Ailey and Donald McKayle and in 1967 made his debut as a choreographer with the dance piece "Argot." In 1972 Falco formed his acclaimed Louis Falco Dance Company and through the 1980s worked with various other repertory companies as well as collaborations with Giorgio Armani Andy Warhol Tom Waits John Lurie and others. The first choreographer to work in commercials Falco also choreographed for film and music videos in the 1980s and is perhaps best remembered today for his work on the film "Fame" 1980 directed by Alan Parker.<br /> <br /> Jack Brusca was a New York artist whose work sat at the intersection of surrealism pop art and neo-realism. Brusca won critical praise in 1991 for his set and costume designs for Falco's ballet "Escarpot" performed by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater at City Center in New York. His work is today held by the Whitney Museum and others.<br /> <br /> Both Falco and Brusca died of complications from AIDS during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York in 1993 at the ages of 51 and 56 respectively.<br /> <br /> 23.25 x 33 inches. Book and lyrics written by Julian Barry screenwriter and playwright perhaps best known for his Academy Award nominated script for Bob Fosse's 1974 film "Lenny." Music written by Claibe Richardson whose most notable Broadway theatre score was for the briefly run 1971 musical adaptation of Truman Capote's 1951 novel "The Glass Harp" a production that has since developed a devoted cult following.<br /> <br /> Boston University's Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center in their "Inventory of the Julian Barry Collection #950" records two much shorter drafts of "Escadrille" a first draft dated 7/15/66 42 pages and a second draft dated 12/31/66 63 pages. In July 1971 Arthur Langer whose production company produced the script attempted to form a partnership unsuccessfully for the purpose of producing the musical.<br /> <br /> A young Harford student travels to France in the early days of World War I to join La Fayette Escadrille flying fighters against the German forces.<br /> <br /> Teal titled wrappers. 26383England. Dating from at least between 1963 and 1975. The collection is in good condition on lightly aged and worn paper and can be grouped into three sections. ONE: Complete typewritten draft 3 44pp. 4to of Sussman's unpublished monograph on Bloch is contained in a large brown envelope with the following note by Sussman on the front: '2ND COPY without illustrations of "Ernest Bloch - Music's Prophet" JS'. It includes the contents list of illustrations introduction and two-page 'Key and Bibliography'. In seven chapters with titles including: '"Blochian" - The Hebraic idiom' 'The nationalist paradox' and 'Voice in the wilderness'. The monograph clearly went through a long process of revision and also present are a number of typescript drafts of various sections with extensive autograph emendations. These total 56pp. 4to with some sections disordered. TWO: Autograph 'Surrey County Council' notebook in Sussman's close handwriting and with extensive emendations is 93pp. 8vo with a further 45pp. 8vo loosely inserted. THREE: Approximately 70pp. 4to of miscellaneous autograph notes by Sussman mainly on traditional Jewish music together with four leaves torn from the 'Synagogue Review' November and June 1951. Sussman lived at 62 St Quintin Avenue London W10. There is no record of his having published any of his music criticism. In 1949 'The Gramophone' carried an advertisement in which he offered 'thorough tuition in Pianoforte playing and theoretical musical subjects'. England. This elegant and lighthearted trio sonata in B-flat major is cast in three movements: Allegro Assai C Andante C and Presto 3/8. Each movement is in binary form with repeats. The opening Allegro Assai incorporates leaping octaves occasional swerves into G-minor terrain and climactic rising scales at its conclusion. The Andante makes use gentle syncopations and slides of a third. The opening two movements start with the Romanesca progression a favorite opening gambit of 18th century composers conveying freshness and an amorous mood. The final Presto is a compact and attractive minuet. Most often the violins harmonize with each other and the bass making frequent use of parallel thirds and sixths; in several spots however they double each other. This may indicate that this work was originally conceived for a larger ensemble with string sections as it is not particularly common to encounter such doubling in chamber music. This sonata may have originally been an orchestral overture to a theatrical work. <br /> <br /> Not located in the RISM manuscripts database. unknown

The Puccini opera of this name had as main characters: Edgar Fidelia and Tigrana. This score does not have those names but instead has: Gertraud Wolfhart and Bertold suggesting it is not by Puccini. There is a stamp on last page of H. Zeidner buchbinderei Kronstadt 8 Aug. 1904. Puccini's Edgar was first performed in 1889. No other identifying marks. A militant song about "centuries of hatred" seething in the awakening hearts of an oppressed minority and the eighteen levels of imperialist hell echoing with the sounds of the coming liberation forces. Lyrics include "The Negro's American oppressors are the common enemy of all races." Lyricist Guang Weiran 1913-2002 was a prominent poet author of some revolutionary China's most well-known songs including the Yellow River Cantata. The present work falls in line with contemporary efforts by Mao himself to express support for the struggles of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Yinyue chubanshe unknown

Pages detached from each other small chip to corner images and music fine remains good to very good and quite attractive. Good to very good. A visually striking example of Oscar Wilde–related ephemera issued during the height of the writer’s American lecture tour of 1882. Though lacking a printed date the title strongly suggests publication in connection with Wilde’s appearance at the Boston Music Hall on January 31 1882 where he delivered his lecture “The English Renaissance†as part of his widely publicized tour across the United States. Contemporary accounts describe the event as a notable cultural moment including the presence of Harvard students dressed in exaggerated aesthetic costume who occupied the front rows of the hall reflecting both the fascination with and satirical reception of Wilde’s aesthetic persona.1<br /> <br /> The lithographic cover prominently depicts a figure carrying an oversized sunflower an image closely associated with Wilde and the broader Aesthetic Movement. Such illustrated sheet music functioned not only as musical publications but also as collectible artifacts capitalizing on the figure of Wilde. Over the course of several months he traveled widely across the United States and Canada delivering lectures on art decoration and cultural taste and quickly became a subject of both admiration and parody in the American press. Although he never returned for a comparable national tour Wilde maintained a lasting connection to American audiences. Inscribed and signed by W. C. Handy on the front cover to Miss Sybil Gregory dated June 16 1951 the year of publication. Near Fine. An uncommon Handy Brothers Music Co. publication issued late in the career of W. C. Handy 1873–1958. The song is credited to Lazarus A. Aaronson a little-documented composer whose work here was published in homage to Handy. The present copy bears Handy’s contemporary inscription: “To Miss Sybil Gregory — W. C. Handy — 6-16-1951.â€<br /> <br /> Little information survives regarding Gregory suggesting a personal acquaintance or admirer within Handy’s musical circle. Signed publications from the Handy Brothers imprint are uncommon and provide a tangible association with one of the most influential figures in the history of American blues. 183512912Boston: Shepley & Wright Printers Congress Street 1835. Broadside 8.75 x 5.25 inches. Ample margins but unevenly trimmed along bottom edge. Otherwise light wear. Near fine. A nice example of a scarce broadside song sheet once attributed to William Apess a Pequot Methodist minister though it was in fact written by British Methodist emigre to Nova Scotia. This is the first separate printing of the song arranged in three five-stave musical notation followed by the lyrics printed in five six-line stanzas. The song itself is focused squarely on Native American religious conversion; the note just below the title reads: "Religion -- the pure religion of the BIBLE -- is the same in substance where it was received into the humble mind -- among untutored Indians as among the most civilized of our race. See in the following Hymn the 'inside heart' of a truly penitent Indian who had embraced the gospel with his whole soul." The tune became a standard in the Methodist Church in the ensuing years with early generations believing it was written by Apess because of its publication in the 1831 second edition of Apess's autobiography A Son of the Forest. It had actually been published first twenty years earlier in Cowdell's The Nova Scotia Minstrel. Despite its misunderstood origins the song itself lived on in Methodist hymnals and even in publications by the assimilationist Carlisle Indian School. Of additional interest to American printing historians the broadside is one of the few surviving products of the short-lived Boston printing firm of Shepley & Wright. Signed in pencil by Myers to a "Welcome" page at the front underneath an image of the musician and his wife. Also present is a 2pp. loosely inserted song sheet. <br /> <br /> with A folded green card envelope 16cm x 10cm. Titled in dark blue to front panel: "Souvenir Folder of Ray R. Myers 'The Armless Musician.'" Lightly sunned to edges slight touches of wear and spotting to card very good. Containing 9 black and white photographs of Ray Myers arranged in a concertina format that folds out into a panorama of images of Mr. Myers performing mundane every day tasks without the benefit of arms. The general theme of his promotional material was to depict him driving shooting lighting a cigarette etc.<br /> <br /> with A folded brown card enevelope 14.5cm x 10cm. Clean and sharp inscribed by Ray R. Myers to the front panel: "Best Wishes Ray R. Myers." Titled in black to rear closure flap; "Souvenir of Ray R. Myers." Containing 9 black and white phtographs of an older Mr. Myers now in his 50's playing guitar composing with a keyboard riding a small tractor playing with his dog etc. <br /> <br /> Ray R. Myers was a celebrity steel guitarist and variety musician born without arms in Lancaster PA in 1911. Quickly showing musical aptitude he was sent to a local community school after his parents maintained they wanted him to have as "normal" an upbringing as possible. Despite living in relative poverty they rejected offers from large circuses and carnivals to take Roy in and did their best to ensure he could make up his own mind as to what career he wished to pursue. Eventually after the death of hs father relatively young Roy did take up Ripley's "Believe it or Not Oddities" offer to perform and became somewhat of a musical celebrity and radio star and by the 1950's he had a daily show on WPDX in West Virginia. 63910.
