Tight Near Fine copy lacking the dustwrapper. <br /> <br /> Hay 1895-1968 started his career in print journalism but made his name as a radio personality primarily in Nashville where he was the originator and long-time Master of Ceremonies of the Grand Ole Opry program on WSM from which the venerable live stage variety show at the Ryman Auditorium drew its name. Between musical acts Hay would intersperse comic interludes in the character of "The Solemn Old Judge" a character he had first invented for his column "Howdy Judge" in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. These columns are reproduced here; they are mostly in the form of racist caricature very much drawn from the minstrel show tradition the typical premise being an African-American character appearing in court before a white judge with much white-supremacist hilarity to follow the Black voices written in exaggerated dialect. <br /> <br /> Hay adapted his "Solemn Old Judge" persona to radio along the way establishing the basic character of the popular American "hillbilly" music industry - white southern and racially segregated - that placed country music in direct opposition to the race-mixing socially "degenerate" music of the northern cities especially New York. In the words of sociologist Richard Peterson: "The down home rural card was a good card to play.because there was such fear of what was happening in the cities. There was so much race mixing there was so much jazz there was all kinds of degradation in music. Here was a way of finding a pure unadulterated American music that came out of an Anglo-Saxon background. This archive of sheet music reveals the musical tastes and cultural interests of Portland Rose Festival aficionados beginning with a Waltz by Harry Miller & George Jameson Roses Fair are Dreaming issued in 1894 by William Pfunder Pharmaceutical Chemist for the 1894 Rose show up to Everett Heacock’s zippy Portland and Roses in 1969. Four of the pre-World War I items were printed by the enterprising Portland printer Bushong & Co. and the vast majority were all printed in Portland for the Portland market. Over half of them have no institutional holdings recorded or actual physical copies such as Marshall’s “Portland you’re a dear old town: roses fragrant†for the 1911 Rose Festival; Prsley’s 1912 Rose Festival March or Lynette Henderson’s The Whole World knows the Portland Rose in 1915. Daniel Wilson dedicated his Rose in Portland Grows to the Royal Rosarians who oversaw the Rose festival and even the Jazz Age reached Portland with Thurber & Lacey’s Rosetime Foxtrot first performed by the “Novelty Syncopating Hawaiian Trio†pictured on the front cover and distributed by Roseway Dairy. It's very difficult to determine edition with a lot of sheet music but based on the number of copies from this series that we have handled we know that the price kept being raised with subsequent printings though all retain the printed copyright date of 1946. The lowest set of printed prices we've seen is " 'Heavenly Grass' - 50 cents 'Lonesome Man' - 50 cents 'Cabin' - 40 cents 'Sugar in the Cane' - 50 cents" The highest printed price we've seen is 85 cents. Based on this we believe two songs in this set are first editions "Cabin" and "Lonesome Man" and two are second editions "Heavenly Grass" and "Sugar in the Cane."<br /> <br /> All quartos. All consist of a single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages save for "Cabin" which is just a single bifolium making four pages hence the lower printed price. All with some rubbing and edgewear "Sugar in the Cane" and "Cabin" each have a small nick on the front cover but all complete and very good with the copy of "Cabin" slightly trimmed along the fore edge and top edge but with no loss to any music. It's uncommon to find a complete set of these musical adaptations of Tessessee Williams' poems by Paul Bowles. G. Shirmer unknown

The author Jeff Weiler died before this book was completed which was to be the third and final volume of his popular trilogy The Encyclopedia of the American Theatre Organ. The book would be devoted entirely to pipe organs built between 1910 and 1943 by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Manufacturing Company of North Tonawanda New York. The original transcript captions footnotes and annotated opus list - all painstakingly crafter - had been carefully organized and filed. In addition thousands of illustrations had been reviewed selected and cataloged. Had Junchen been any less fastidious in documenting the project reconstruction of this book would not have been possible. This illustrated history documents the Wurlitzer pipe organs built between 1910 and 1943 by the Rudolph Wurlitzer Manufacturing Company of North Tonawanda featuring over 1000 images factory records archival documents and a comprehensive opus list chronicling the Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organs designed by Robert Hope-Jones to accompany silent films in movie palaces.
