1998MU-37New York: Garland Publishing 1998. Scholarly text presents representative compositions by two American psalmodists who were actively engaged in the reform of American psalmody during the 1790s and early 1800s. American compositions were often criticized for two features: their failure to conform to the harmonic norms of European art music and their often vigorous animated musical style which was sometimes considered lacking in a reverent spirit appropriate for use in public worship. Includes an introduction on the composers' careers suggestions for performance and brief notes on each piece. 230 pgs. Illustrated. Minor tiny scuff mark on lower front and rear covers. Minimal shelfwear. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Garland Publishing Hardcover

1880221641880. Remarkable late 19th-century Albumen photograph depicting a large racially integrated music ensemble and social gathering posed outside a clapboard-sided rural building likely a church or schoolhouse in the American South or border states. Cabinet card photograph. Albumen print mounted on heavy cardstock. Circa 1880s-1890s. Measures 8.5" x 6.5". The group includes an African American man with a guitar two men possibly of mixed or Latino descent with an accordion and another with a trumpet. The multi-racial group is underscored by the presence of two African American women in white cotton dresses standing near the rear door wearing common attire for rural working-class women of the time. This integrated gathering situates this photograph in the broader history of multi-ethnic labor communities in the post-Reconstruction South. This photograph captures a rarely documented moment of interracial leisure and cultural expression in the 19th century challenging dominant visual narratives of rigid racial separation. The array of stringed and folk instruments including guitar violin and accordion suggests a vernacular musical tradition drawing from Black white and possibly Latino idioms-potentially embodying the creolized roots of American folk and blues. The informality of the setting and the positioning of the figures-seated on the ground and porch steps-convey a shared sense of camaraderie and musical celebration. Photograph is in very good condition with strong contrast and fine detail. Mount shows light age toning and minor corner wear. An extraordinary and unusually inclusive document of 19th-century American musical culture visualizing interracial social life and artistic collaboration before the codification of Jim Crow segregation. unknown
4438N.p. n.d. Good. 7pp. Original pictorial self wrappers with photographic portrait on front cover. First and last leaves detached moderate wear and rubbing light soiling pencil annotations covering last blank page. A rare music score for a "Negro spiritual" arranged by noted African-American composer Lucie E. Campbell. The song is "Tramping - Wanna Be Ready - Walk Children" and is arranged over six pages here. A wonderful portrait of Campbell appears on the front cover of the present work. The Memphis Music Hall of Fame describes Lucie Campbell as follows: "One of the most regarded composers of African American religious song Lucie E. Campbell was a pioneering figure linking traditional hymnody to modern gospel composition and bridging gender and racial divides in the world of gospel music. Alongside such musical peers as Thomas A. Dorsey Roberta Martin and fellow Memphian Reverend W. Herbert Brewster she helped to forge the black gospel sound of the first half of the twentieth century and further belongs to a small coterie of composers who have set lasting standards for religious music in the black Baptist church." Campbell was also notable as an activist for social justice. She headed the Negro Education Association working for pay equity and other benefits for African American teachers. She also defied Jim Crow laws refusing to give up her seat in a segregated streetcar in 1945 a decade before Rosa Parks. A detailed biography of her is included in the Tennessee Encyclopedia. OCLC records just a single copy of this work at the University of Alabama. unknown

Interior pages with some wear to edges excellent. Overall very good to excellent. Sheet music for “We Are Americans Too†by Andy Razaf Eubie Blake and Charles L. Cooke. The sheet music was published by Handy Brothers Music Company the publishing company of musician musicologist and “Father of the Blues†W. C. Handy. At the time of writing the US was deep in the Jim Crow era; African Americans during World War II served in segregated units were mostly excluded from officership and were treated poorly at home and abroad. Razaf writes: “None have loved Old Glory more than we. / Or have shown a greater loyalty / Bunker Hill to the Rhine / We’ve been right there in line / Serving the Red White and Blue / All our future is here / Everything we hold dear / WE ARE AMERICANS TOO.â€

We find four copies on OCLC.

1 Martin Luther King Jr. to Lovie M. 1869List3680Boston: Koppitz Prüfer & Co. 30 West St. cor. Mason Street; New York: Wm. A. Pond & Co 1869. Folio lithographed cover with hand-coloring. Stitching removed at margins suggesting this was bound in a larger volume else about fine. Signed by Holt next to the illustration. Near Fine. A finely executed example of post–Civil War American sheet music lithography depicting stage performer Elise Holt in masculine costume top hat and cigar in a style typical of Boston commercial lithographic production of the period. The imagery situates Holt within the established nineteenth-century tradition of theatrical male impersonation or “breeches roles†in which female performers adopted masculine dress and gesture as part of fashionable stage personas. Archival records identify Holt as a ballet dancer who later appeared as a burlesque performer and died while touring in 1873 after contracting typhoid fever.1 She led the Elyse Holt Burlesque Troupe. Photographic evidence held by Digital Commonwealth likewise shows Holt posed in masculine stage attire indicating that male impersonation formed part of her professional repertoire. The song sometimes seen as “Tassels on her Boots†extolls the virtues of women’s clothing. Overall a nice lithographic example of women performing in men’s roles showing a fairly obscure but widely touring performer whose career was tragically cut short by illness. We find two copies of this sheet at BYU and Baylor.

1 “Elise Holt ballet dancer turned burlesque star†Kentucky Historical Society Nicola Marschall Collection https://www.kyhistory.com/digital/collection/PH/id/2477/. unknown

This is the only piece of sheet music we have come across to omit the title from the front cover; though beautiful in its clean simplicity this is a strange and unique presentation style for sheet music of any era. Also of note the title here is reproduced exactly as it is printed above the music with no apostrophe in "Devons."
