He Was A Staff Lecturer On The Oxford University Extension System From 1892-1894 And Lecturer On Indian History At Cambridge Writing Also For The Academy The Daily Chronicle The Speaker And 'Acting As London Correspondent For The Statesman And The Calcutta Friend Of India. Stephens Immigrated To The United States In 1894 And Took The Position Of Professor At Cornell University In The Department Of History Where He Taught European History. In 1902 Stephens Went To The University Of California As Professor Of History And Director Of University Extension A Position He Held From 1902-1909. He Served As Dean Of The University Of California College Of Arts And Sciences From The Fall Of 1918 Until His Death. His Most Notable Contribution In The Aha However Was As A Member Of The Committee Of Seven Which In 1899 Produced The Report The Study Of History In Schools For The Aha And Which Influenced The Teaching Of History In American Schools For The Next 40 Years. Wallace Arthur Sabin 1869 -1937 Was A Composer And Organist Born In Culworth Northamptonshire England. COPAC only locates one copy at Cambridge of Robinson's piece published by W. Sprague of Westminster in 1874 copied by F. C. Wood 'words by permission of Messrs. Hopwood & Crew'. All items 12mo. ITEM ONE one page with slight loss at head: 'Willm Haslam' of 41 Middleton Road Dalston to 'Master Robinson' 21 March 1871. He will not require 'the services of yourself & Friend - on Thursday at Hounslow'. ITEM TWO one page: Theodore Distin 'Theo Distin' to Robinson 28 March 1872. 'I shall be happy to sing for you for whatever you can afford to give - & be pleased to help you in any way'. He will also 'look over' Robinson's 'Hymn': 'I have not yet had time'. Distin member of a family of musical entertainers is notable as the man who brought the first of Adolphe Sax's Sax Horns to Britain. ITEM THREE one page: 'Chas. F. 'My former estimate was for 12 stave pages & I see by putting the song on 1 page 15 staves will be required . Work done by this system is always cleaned off the stones as soon as finished so that the entire number of copies is likely to be required are always ordered at once. This makes it so much cheaper than engraving. Proofs also cannot be given but accuracy is insured by my having a correct copy & thoroughly examining the work before printing a single copy. If your copy is correct you need have no fear.' Discusses details of legal deposit and asks to be informed on some matters relating to the song. 'What will you do . After ceremony whilst they are in Vestry similar music leading into Wedding March.' Gives further instructions and asks Robinson to discuss with the verger. 'Respecting terms of course it ought to be One Guinea ask about it and try hard for it but if any demur is made do not object as something was mentioned to me a short time since about obliging a friend for such a ceremony but I gave no decided answer; of course I being away alters the case . but take what is offered and I will arrange with you afterwards'. Jones 'per RG.' 27 Doynton Street Highgate New Town N.W. to Robinson 22 June 1878. Thanks him 'on behalf of my troupe' for sending 'Gently down the Stream' with band parts 'which we shall have the greatest pleasure in singing at our next entertainment; I with-held myself from writing before as I wished to put your letter &c before a special committee last evening they unanimously thanked you for your great kindness and agreed to have the song tried by the band this evening; they the band tried it & the Musical Director & the whole of the Troupe pronounced it a very pretty and suitable song'. Asks if Robinson would insert 'on the title page of a new edition "As sung by Mr. R. S. Austin of the original Lilian Minstrels". I have Grafton Hall Grafton Street Tottenham Ct. Road in view for our next concert'. ITEM THIRTEEN one page: Jones again 'per RG. to Robinson 9 July 1878. Fine. - A powerful 14 inch high by 11 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting the Mexican composer and conductor Carlos Chavez conducting from a crude podium set up in front of scaffolding. Depicted in three quarter profile from the hip up Chavez leans forth with furrowed brow while conducting with his hands. Attired in a white sweater tucked into his pants with a colorful scarf tucked into his sweater the conductor is posed in front of the white tarps punctuated with colorful lines which drape the background. Scaffolding rises up from behind Chavez at right of the image. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. <p>The Mexican composer and conductor Carlos Antonis de Padua Chavez y Ramirez 1899-1978 was a music theorist educator as well as a journalist. He founded the Mexican Symphony Orchestra and was also its director. Influenced by Mexican culture his second symphony the highly popular "Sinfonia India" uses native Yaqui percussion instruments. He conducted the Symphony of the Air at the Empire State Music Festival held in Ellenville New York in July 1956.<p>Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. Born in Vienna Austria in 1901 Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra later called The Symphony of the Air until his death.<p>From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance rehearsal and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.<p>Gara's action portraits were used for record covers for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time Life and other major magazines around the world. More than 80 words addressed to James Perry owner and editor of the Morning Chronicle signed in the text "Mr Ashe" by Andrew Ashe. "Lady Owen's derniere Musical Converzazione for the Season took place on Monday Eve when between three & four hundred visitors of the first distinction were present. In addition to her Ladyships' accomplished Daughters Performances on the Harp and Pianoforte the musical Department was sustained by Mr. and Miss Nolde; Mr Mrs and the Misses Ashe and Mr Be. whose distinguished and united Talents contributed in the highest degree to the Evenings Entertainment - / Mr Ashe will feel obliged if Mr Perry will have the above taken notice of". There are several corrections with a couple of words crossed out and another penned in. There is a small hole near the top right edge of the page which blends in with the mount and some minor soiling. Once apparently tipped into an album with remnants of gray paper adhering to the right edge of the mount's verso. Very good.</p><p>Andrew Ashe 1756-1838 was born in Northern Ireland at Lisburn. He studied the violin as a young man and was considered a musical prodigy. A Colonel in the British army Count Bentinck had taken the boy under his care whereupon Ashe regularly attended the practices of the Count's regimental band. As a result he became familiar with various wind instruments and took a special interest in the flute. Having been introduced to the recently developed six key flute Ashe abandoned the violin and devoted himself to the flute. He made a much admired public debut in London on February 24 1792 performing a flute concerto of his own composition. In 1799 Ashe married a pupil of Vinanzio Rauzzini the soprano Mary Comer 1774-1843. Between 1801 and 1816 the soon to be famous Ashe sisters were born. Honoria born in 1802 was a pianist and another sister possibly Mary born in 1801 played the pedal harp. During this period Ashe was principal flautist at The King's Theatre London principal flautist of the London Philharmonic Society Professor of flute at the Royal Academy of music and musical director of the Bath concerts. Often longing for his roots Andrew Ashe with his family performed in Ireland several times before settling there in 1823. During the 1820's & 1830's they were one of the most prominent musical families in Dublin.</p> pre-1821.

With their impecable eye for talent Joy Division New Order Echo & the Bunnyman Throbbling Gristle et al and their instantly-recognizable flyers Final Solution produced many of the best shows in and around London especially for shows at London's legendary gay nightclub Heaven. And the flyers such as though included here were in no small part key to this success. With their distinctive and colorful designs these uncredited flyers both embody the aesthetics of the New Romantics which the "Heaven sound" helped define while retaining the lean aethetic of postpunk. Included here are five flyers for shows at Heaven Thompson Twins Flock of Seagulls among others as well as one for a show at Assembly Hall Bauhaus all from 1981. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". <br /> <br /> The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. <br /> <br /> The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. <br /> <br /> The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. <br /> <br /> An unusual survival. unknown

Archive of four vintage oversize double weight photographs on location in the Cascade Mountains WA for the 1973 film with one photograph showing director Charles Jarrott and a cameraman on preparing to shoot a scene with featuring extras. Three photographs are borderless. From the archive of photographer Alan Pappe with his stamp signature and manuscript ink annotations on the verso of two photographs. <br /> <br /> Pappe worked as a film still and press photographer for 30 years photographing a who's who of film and music stars including iconic images of Sharon Tate Jimi Hendrix and Liza Minnelli as well as album cover for the "Grease" soundtrack album and the interior images of Jefferson Airplane's "After Bathing at Baxter's." His 1972 "Time" magazine cover photograph of Minnelli in "Cabaret" is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. <br /> <br /> Based on the 1933 novel by James Hilton about the survivors of a plane crash in the Himalays who are rescued and taken to the mystical valley of Shangri-La.
