1866586352Trumansburgh NY: R. Mockford 1866. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. Single bifolium with a single sheet insert making six pages. foxing and offsetting throughout and edgewear still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 3912 - 3. Although published 72 years before Ireland would elect their first president Douglas Hyde the cover nonetheless states that this song is "dedicated to the first president of the Irish Republic." This is not an uncommon dedication to find on Irish sheet music of the late 19th and early 20th century. Though it should not be read today as a statement of prescience but as it would have been read in 1866 as a statement of hope and resilience in Ireland's fight for independence for the day "they proudly set the Irish Green above the English Red." Unrecorded by OCLC and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. A rare and early example of this celebrated Irish poem set to music. R. Mockford unknown

It continues “The ‘Hagadah for the Third Seder’ was written under the impact of the great event in jewish history which took place six years ago in 1948– the creation of the State of Israel….The National Committee for Labor Israel in its thirtieth anniversary year proudly presents the ‘Hagadah for the Third Seder’ to all its friends in the United States and Canada.â€

Opens with Chaim’s Weitzmann’s 1941 Speech to the Histadruth in America during the Holocaust where he tells the labor organization:

I do not want to deny to you that perhaps many of our troubles and difficulties stem from the fact that our work in the Land of Israel is so successful. Yesterday…
The former High Commissioner of the Land of Israel said to England that after the war the groups in the Land of Israel would be considered as a model for the construction of the world. There he pointed out forms of life were formed which after all the crisis and search that Europe is going through it has not yet been achieved through the sacrifices of the Histadrut and the people who understood the role that the Histadrut played in the construction of Israel….
My few words are enough as a greeting in the difficult and unfortunate time we are living through. Right here in this country which is perhaps not yet as connected personally through people with the Land of Israel as you would like it to be.
Your very own want and as I would want it and as the Histadrut would want it just in this country America which is led with such great and spirited people…many of the Jewish workers have well understood where their debt lies.
These days I met with an unseen labor leader. I told him that now everyone has to work together for the Land of Israel he replied that all Jewish workers in America are already working together and that the leftist leftists are all for the Land of Israel….
To the work and sacrifices for Jewish establishment. I know we will still have bitter times. the world unfortunately it did not understand that while the dark forces attacked the Jews they attacked the Ten Commandments without which a civilized society cannot exist. But the new dark Egypt will also end.
The sun will begin to shine again and it will shine for us too. But until the sun appears again we will still have to go through a difficult long and dark night. At Passover a count is taken. Today if I don't move any error is the foundation of grace in salvationâ€

The Histadrut Third Seder was a public communal event organized by the American Histadrut the Israel labor federation that took place annually in the United States particularly in New York City for several decades. It was a secular Yiddish cultural alternative to traditional Passover seders using the Seder structure to commemorate events in Jewish history often focusing on the 20th-century return of Jews to Israel and the founding of Histadrut itself.

The Third Seder was an American secular and politically motivated interpretation of the Passover Seder tradition particularly associated with the Labor Zionist movement and institutions like Farband. Evolved from earlier educational models these public events combined Passover's themes of freedom and social justice with socialist ideals and support for Histadrut in Eretz Israel. They featured speakers Zionist and Yiddish songs and fundraising for labor projects creating a unique cultural and political Passover ritual for immigrant communities.
For an interesting history of the third seder see Jenna Weissman Joselit’s A Passover Do-Over: The third Seder was once an American tradition with a sense of community and politics that set it apart from the first two in Tablet April 5 2017 https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/belief/articles/a-passover-do-over
T he National Committee for Labor Israel NCLI founded in 1923 as the National Committee for Labor Palestine was an American fundraising organization that supported the Histadrut Israel's labor federation. The organization closely linked to the Labor Zionist movement solicited funds from American labor unions and Jewish communities to finance the Histadrut's educational health and social programs. NCLI also aimed to strengthen ties between American and Israeli labor sectors and promote public support for Labor Israel. The committee eventually faced financial difficulties and dissolved.
“NCLI was headquartered in New York City and oversaw regional fundraising offices in other cities such as Boston Chicago Cleveland Detroit Los Angeles Miami and Philadelphia….
In spite of their close association the relationship between NCLI and the Histadrut was complicated….The labor involved in cataloging and assigning thousands of sponsorship opportunities transmitting monies between countries producing evidence of ongoing projects and attaching the correct names and acknowledgments to finished projects was considerable—especially in light of the fact that the organizations operated in different languages in a mostly pre-computer workplace. The two periodically accused each other of mishandling funds and disagreed about which of them had the authority to resolve their disputes….operations were ceased in 2006†Center for Jewish History.

OCLC: 713758489 & 1284891527. 1850List3617London: Musical Bouquet Office 192 High Holborn; J. Allen 20 Warwick Lane Paternoster Row 1850. Folio sheet music 4 pp 9 ½ x 13 ¼ inches. Lithographed title with portrait illustration. Minor edge wear and light toning; very good. An early printed musical tribute to the Afro-Cuban singer Donna Maria Martinez Morena one of the earliest Black vocalists to achieve international recognition on the European stage. Morena was born in Havana to free Black parents and recognized early for her musical ability and intellectual promise. She was sent to Spain for formal study at Málaga and later admitted to the Royal Musical Conservatory of Madrid under the patronage of Queen Christina. By the mid-nineteenth century she was appearing in prominent theaters in Paris and London and was widely admired for the purity and range of her voice. Contemporary commentators sometimes referred to her as “The Black Malibran†comparing her to the celebrated Spanish soprano Maria Malibran while others regarded her as one of the few singers capable of rivaling the famed Swedish soprano Jenny Lind.

The lithographed title page depicts Morena seated with a guitar framed by romantic landscape vignettes and identifies her beneath the portrait. The music included in the issue reflects the complex musical culture of the period. The second song printed here “Rosa Lee; or Don’t Be Foolish Joe†composed by Jonathan Blewitt appears alongside “Sing Darkies Sing†composed by Stephen Glover and presented as sung by the Ethiopian Serenaders one of the most prominent blackface minstrel troupes performing in Britain and the United States during the 1840s and 1850s. The juxtaposition of a portrait honoring a distinguished Black concert singer with minstrel repertoire illustrates the contradictory environment in which genuine Black musical achievement and racialized stage caricature circulated simultaneously in nineteenth-century popular entertainment.

This piece forms number 276 of the Musical Bouquet a London sheet-music serial begun in 1848 and eventually extending to more than 8000 numbers. Early issues such as the present example were issued during the formative years of the series and represent some of the earliest numbers in the long-running publication. Complete at four pages. 1949List3603Various publishers 1949. Three titles as follows: J’ai deux Amours. Fox-trot chanté par Josephine Baker. Paris: Éditions Salabert 1930. 4 pp. Fine condition;. Near fine condition. A tight visually appealing trio of illustrated Parisian sheet music issues tracing Josephine Baker’s arc from Jazz Age sensation to postwar cultural legend. J’ai deux Amours—arguably her defining anthem—captures the carefully crafted dual identity that propelled Baker’s rise: African American expatriate turned Parisian icon marketed simultaneously as modernist spectacle and cosmopolitan muse. As scholars have noted Baker’s image circulated widely through commercial ephemera such as sheet music covers where graphic design celebrity branding and racialized fantasy converged in the interwar marketplace.1

Sur Deux Notes reflects Baker’s assimilation into mainstream chanson culture and her ongoing collaborations within Paris’s cabaret milieu while Revoir Paris issued after World War II resonates with her decorated service in the French Resistance and her celebrated return to the Folies Bergère stage. Together these pieces offer a compact visual and musical snapshot of Baker’s evolving persona across two decades—part performance artifact part cultural document and wholly emblematic of Paris as a crossroads of Black modernism and popular entertainment.

1 Bennetta Jules-Rosette Josephine Baker in Art and Life: The Icon and the Image University of Illinois Press 2007. 1865List3646New York: Wm. A. Pond & Co 1865. Folio sheet music lithographed pictorial cover. 6 pp. including cover. 9.5 x 12.25 inches. Typical light age toning and minor edge wear; very good example with strong impression remnants of string at spine removed from a larger volume. A vivid piece of end-of-war political satire commemorating the capture of Confederate president Jefferson Davis whose attempted escape in May 1865 quickly became the subject of popular ridicule in Northern newspapers and song sheets. The cover lithograph depicts Davis fleeing through a wooded encampment while dressed in women’s clothing a reference to widely circulated reports that he attempted to evade Union troops by donning a shawl or petticoats; in truth he had borrowed a shawl from his wife. Behind him a Union soldier points in recognition while onlookers react with amusement. The music was written by Henry Tucker a prolific mid-nineteenth-century songwriter known for sentimental and topical pieces with lyrics by George Cooper one of the most active American lyricists of the period and collaborator with composers such as Stephen Foster and J. R. Thomas. Together they produced a number of patriotic and topical songs during the Civil War years. The myth of Davis in women’s clothing was represented a few different ways though this large lithographic illustration done by Henry C. Eno is possibly the most iconic. Wm. A. Pond & Co unknown
1917List3648New York City: Leo. Feist Inc. and others 1917. Five pieces of sheet music see full inventory below. Overall very good plus. Julian Eltinge 1881–1941 was the most commercially successful and popular female impersonator of his time. Beginning with drag performances in his adolescence he developed a convincing portrayal of female characters—shocking audiences at the end of shows by revealing that he was in costume—and had a successful career on the vaudeville circuit and on Broadway followed by appearances in several silent films and as mores around crossdressing changed in nightclubs.

Offered here are five pieces of sheet music written for Eltinge three of which are from the 1910 musical comedy The Fascinating Widow. A New York Times review of the Widow remarks that “once over the initial unpleasantness of the idea of female impersonation which is not easy for people of delicate sensibilities there is nothing especially displeasing about Mr. Eltinge’s efforts at femininity†and notes Eltinge’s popularity and ability to draw crowds.1

Titles Included:
“In the Land of Wedding Bells.†Howard Johnson and Geo.
