25575This German conductor and composer of folk music solos and vocal pieces enjoyed enormous popularity throughout Europe in the mid-19th century. ALS in German 1p 5" X 8" Braunschweig Germany 1862 January 22. Near fine. Though boldly penned and attractive Abt's miniscule and stylized script makes translation difficult -- appears to be discussing his schedule and travel to Leipzig Bremen and other German locations. Accompanied by a handsome and striking 8½" X 11" book illustration portrait a head-and-shoulders artist's rendering of Abt later in life. unknown

Signed with a black marker by the four members of the group: Randy Owen Jeff Cook Teddy Gentry and Mark Herndon. Matted in off-white and set in a black frame measuring 15 x 13.25 inches. Light blue cloth titled in black on the front cover and the spine. The covers are lightly stained with wear to the corners and spine. 142 pages of music and lyrics with profuse illustrations throughout. There is some occasional soiling particularly to the rear endpaper and pastedown and a short tear to the bottom of page 19. Good. <p>RARE Signed First edition.<p>Inscribed & signed by the author Alys E. Bentley. The inscription dated 1914 appears to read "For Miss Lilla" possibly the music educator Lilla Belle Pitts 1884-1970.<p>A teacher of dancing and music in Washington and New York City Alys E. Bentley 1869-1951 taught in Carnegie Hall's largest studio. She taught the various aspects of "rhythmics" as related to the arts and taught such prominent artists as Geraldine Farrar Mary Ellis and the American dancer choreographer and film & theater director Jerome Robbins. As director of public school music in Washington Bentley introduced choral singing and published several music books including her own collection of songs which she set to music. In addition to teaching in Washington and at Carnegie Hall she also taught at her Summer camp on Chateaugay Lake in Merrill NY where Sherwood Anderson among others came to study each Summer.<p>Jerome Robbins studied modern dance with Alys Bentley while in high school and she had a strong influence on him. She encouraged her students to improvise steps to music and Robbins said of her that "what she gave me immediately was the absolute freedom to make up my own dances without inhibition or doubts." Notched and worn along the spine from once being bound within an album soiling throughout and some light edgewear still a complete and very good copy. For voice and piano. The front cover states "As sung by Mr. Braham." Unlike most sheet music associated with Charles Dickens this song comes from an actual collaboration Dickens had with the composer John Hullah. This song is from their comic opera The Village Coquettes. The show premiered in 1836 and ran for 19 nights in London before moving to Edinburgh where it was performed under new direction. The reviews were less than favorable and over time Dickens grew to agree with them once stating that he "wouldn’t repeat his productions for a thousand pounds apiece" and he reportedly wished for his foray into theater The Village Coquettes and a piece called The Strange Gentleman to be forgotten completely F.G. Kitton. We know of two other editions of this song thought to be published around the same time but OCLC does not locate any physical holdings of this edition published by A. Fiot though they do record one digital holding and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. A. Fiot unknown

A vocal duet with piano accompaniment. This song is originally titled "The Banks o' Doon" but is sometimes called "Ye Banks and Braes" in reference to the lyrics of the third version of the song. Burns set the words to the air "The Caledonian Hunt's Delight" and he wrote three versions of the lyrics all originally published in 1791. The lyrics printed here are from the third version. Also included is a verse by G. Thomson untitled but described as a "beautiful English song" that can be sung to the same tune; the first line is "Unless with my Amanda blest." Inscribed by the great Tin Pan Alley lyricist himself twice one on a prelim blank wtith the full inscription: "To Mary Jane From your safety friend Irving Caesar Easter -- 1938". The second signing is at the base of the Introduction page poem or lyric with no content besides the name. 4to. 30.5 by 23 cm. 71 pp. 17 of the pages are full page illustrations or plates 13 of which are color plates. Plus vignette illustrations at the beginning and/or end of most of the songs contained in the anthology. 17 songs about safety in various settings activities contexts -- cars ice skating hot and cold water with matches etc. etc. Idiosyncratic and highly original. The book appears to served as a crusade for Caesar who toured relentlessly taking the song's message to schools across the land. The book has inked writing surrounding the front cover vertical oval centerpiece and also scattered on the rear cover. From this we know that Mary Jane was from Roslyn Estates an upscale Nassau County suburb of New York and was a fourth grader at Saint Mary's School a parochial school in nearby Manhassat. We can not make out her last name. The rear cover has some other blurred and/or random writing. Overall the songbook shows moderate wear. The pages are generally clean though. Irving Caesar unknown
