Volume detail on the spine of Volume II has been repaired others are fragile. Pageblocks are tanned and discoloured light tanning leading into page edges. Tanning and foxing noted at first few pages including title pages. Sporadic thereafter. Volumes II & III have a small green ink notation opposite the title page. A second part dealing with Magnetism, Electricity, Optics and Astronomy, was proposed but was never published. Provenance: With the book stamp of James Brown with his motto 'Floreat Majestas', presentation inscription to front fly-leaf "Presented to James Brown is testimony of his ability as a young mathematician. Dumfries Academy, July 1855."

A compendium of information on the early nineteenth-century printing trade: payment for compositors, master printers' rates, typographical marks, casting off copy, type specimens, etc. This book is far scarcer than Stower's earlier work The Printer's Grammar of 1808.
