A rare educational pamphlet published at the height of the Enlightenment of scientific discovery and philosophic discourse and pre-dating planetary discoveries including Uranus 1781. As such it only examines the Sun Mercury Venus Earth the Moon Jupiter and Saturn amongst other astronomical features like comets the weather stars and the Copernican System after refuting the Ptolemaic and Tychonian Systems. The frontispiece depicts the Copernican solar system. ESTC locates copies in Aberdeen NLS and BL only with Worldcat adding one more in Stanford. ESTC T70937. Printed for the Author unknown

There have been many requests for copies of these talks and the present book has grown out of them. Obviously they have been modified and some of the essentially topical but now outdated references have been removed; but I hope they present a varied and perhaps historical account of events during 1972 a momentous year in astronomical progress.' FOUR to EIGHT: Five Typed Letters Signed all 'Patrick' from Moore to 'Dear David' - H. David Lloyd of the South African Boradcasting Corporation Johannesburg. Totalling six pages. The correspondence concerns the preparation of the talks for publication. In the first letter 11 November 1972 he writes: 'I dropped everything and did my best. I have amended the articles to make them untopical . I have added a Foreword and I have managed to scrape up a picture for each talk.' On 27 November 1972 he writes that he is 'off to America on Monday for Apollo 17 but have arranged two sessions at the BBC this week before I go. I will therefore be well ahead. Wish I could do one direct from Cape kennedy; but it's too risky'. A letter of 15 January 1973 largely devoted to the 'mystery' of tapes of talks despatched by the BBC which have not arrived in South Africa has as postscript: 'Forgive typing. I am used to a 1908 machine and the BBC one is modern!' On 23 January 1973 he asks if anything came of 'the book of the talks As you know I rushed it through before I went to America in December because I gathered it was needed before Christmas; but I haven't heard another thing!! I'd be most grateful if you'd let me know; and if you are NOT publishing them after all I'd be glad to have them back because someone else is very interested in doing them Reid's.' In the last letter 5 February 1973 he discusses the talks expresses relief at the arrival of the tapes and pleasure at the news about the book. He concludes: 'I do hope to see you again this year. I have the pleasantest possible memories of South Africa!' NINE: Autograph Card Signed 'P' by Moore. 11 November 1972. With his Farthings letterhead. He is 'Off to New York for a conference' and has airmailed 'all illustrations . with long letter i.e. Item Four'. 'Back to Selsey on Nov. 24. Have recorded well ahead of course and am recording again on the 26th.' TEN: Typed Note on BBC letterhead from C. Bunyan for Pat Wood of General Features Television. 14 November 1972. 'Patrick Moore has asked me to send you this slide of Tycho's statue for the book.' ELEVEN: Copy of Typed Letter from Lloyd to Moore 'Productions Organiser English Service'. 31 January 1973. Informing him that 'the missing tape was discovered incorrectly filed in our Tape Library at Broadcast House' and that after a delay publication is 'now in progress'. In 8° (20,5x14 cm); 20, (36) pp. e una carta di tav. astronomica più volte ripiegata. Brossura coeva, qualche lieve piega e segno del tempo. All’interno in buone condizioni di conservazione. Prima edizione rara, nessun esemplare censito in ICCU stampata a Parma da Bodoni nei suoi chiari ed eleganti caratteri. L’opera raccoglie le “Effemeride Astronomica” del celebre matematico veronese, Pietro Cossali (Verona, 29 giugno 1748 – Padova, 20 dicembre 1815) per l’anno 1794. Di nobili origini, suo padre era il conte Benassù e sua madre la contessa Laura Malmignati, l’autore iniziò gli studi presso il collegio gesuitico di Verona dove fin dai primi anni dimostrò una grande predisposizione per le dottrine matematiche. Fattosi teatino, probabilmente per la maggior apertura di quest’ordine verso le moderne tesi scientifiche, perfeziona i suoi studi a Milano concentrandosi particolarmente nell’eloquenza, nella teologia, nella matematica e nella fisica. E’ qui che conosce in modo approfondito gli studi di Newton, Locke e Wolff. Nel 1770 il suo nome inizia a circolare negli ambienti accademici italiani tanto che gli viene offerta una lettura di diritto canonico all’Università di Padova, lettura che però lo stesso rifiuta, sembra, per concentrarsi completamente sugli studi scientifici. Nel 1778 torna a Verona dove fonda un’Accademia e si pone in luce come matematico e fisico. E’ in questo periodo che pubblica i primi scritti scientifici fra i quali un interessante studio dal titolo su “Su l'equilibrio esterno ed interno nelle macchine aerostatiche” nel quale l’autore dibatte sulle recenti esperienze di volo di Montgolfier che dimostra la grande attenzione di Cossali per le nuove scoperte scientifiche. Cossali fu anche uno dei primi in Italia a far alzare un pallone aerostatico in una manifestazione pubblica tenuta all’Arena di Verona. Proprio gli scritti di Cossali dedicati al volo, spinsero nel 1787, il Duca Ferdinando di Borbone ad offrire al matematico veronese la cattedra di fisica teorica prima e poi dal 1791 quelle di astronomia, idraulica e meteorologia dell’Università di Parma poi. L’autore si impegnò fin da subito a fornire una strumentazione scientifica adeguata all’ateneo parmense che nella seconda metà del XVIII° secolo aveva visto un grande progresso didattico e di fama. È in questo periodo che le sue "ricerche si concretarono in sette volumi di effemeridi astronomiche annue (Effemeride astronomica per l'anno..., Parma 1791 e seguenti) pubblicati fino al 1804 con saggi introduttivi su temi d'astronomia generale. Altri scritti di questa fase furono le Apparenze del solare eclissi del 3 apr. 1791, Parma 1791, il Discorso... astronomico su l'eclissi del 1800 (Parma s. d.) ed il Prenuncio... sull'eclissi dell'11febbr. 1804, Venezia 1804. Il C. ottenne anche dal governo un aiuto finanziario per osservazioni su pianeti che effettuò a Milano, nell'osservatorio di Brera, e per l'istallazione d'un osservatorio meteorologico nella casa parmense dei teatini, nel quale effettuò registrazioni sistematiche pluriennali che non riuscirà mai, malgrado l'intento, a pubblicare. […]A PSenza titolo-7arma il C. s'impose tra le personalità culturali più in vista, e fu vicino alla stessa famiglia ducale e in particolare al principe ereditario Ludovico, che in una lettera allo Spallanzani l'indicò come ispiratore di suoi esperimenti volti a smentire le tesi del naturalista sull'orientamento dei pipistrelli (un sonetto del C. al principe è a Guastalla, Bibl. Maldottiana, Fondo provenienze varie, ms. 39); inoltre il C. fu consulente governativo per questioni idrauliche., e arbitro in vertenze analoghe tra famiglie parmensi. "(da http://www.treccani.it). Con il cambiamento della situazione politica parmense, nel 1805, torna a Verona dove “si vide offrire la cattedra di introduzione al calcolo sublime nel locale liceo e la sovrintendenza a canali, ponti e strade, mentre il governo austriaco ricorse a lui per consulenze idrauliche; proseguì anche la ricerca e le pubblicazioni scientifiche” (da http://www.treccani.it). L’opera qui presentata riporta le effemeridi per l’anno 1794 con la posizione dei pianeti e delle stelle nei diversi mesi dell’anno, rendendo così possibile indirizzare gli strumenti astronomici ed individuare correttamente gli oggetti astrali presenti nel campo visivo dei telescopi.
