First edition of this exceedingly scarce catalogue of touting “Kelloggâ€truss bridges which consisted of Pratt inner bracing with additional diagonals and were popular in the Northeast at the end of the 1800’s until about 1901-1905 spanning between 75 to 150 feet. These types of bridges played a crucial role in road building driven by the Good Roads Movement during the opening decades of the 20th century. At the end of the 19th century less than 50% of roads within American cities were paved and the very few highways and turnpikes connecting cities and towns were little more than crushed rock macadam dirt roads or even paths. Although founded in the 1880s by bicycling enthusiasts the Good Roads Movement at the beginning of the 20th century began to be driven largely by advocates of the automobile who favored sturdy durable bridges which could be easily maintained. These Kellogg truss bridges featured riveted steel trusses and were often anchored in stone foundations. Charles H. Kellogg the elder was an active bridge engineer and builder whose firm wen through several different configurations and owners between 1870-1915 while his son Charles H. Kellogg the younger operated his own company from 1891-1901 and should not be confused with the short-lived Kellogg Iron Bridge Works Co. which was using the Union Bridge Company’s shop. A bound volume containing a collection of ten publications relating to the Western Rail-Road Corporation from the incorporation in 1836 to 1840. The First Annual Report from 1836 is included twice. Bound in contemporary original three quarter leather which is moderately to heavily worn with the front board nearly detached. There is minor to moderate foxing and the final half of the text is lightly stained at the top corner. The 1836-37 Reports of the Engineers is complete with two fold-out maps which were printed on very thin onion-skin paper. These two maps have been detached and are misfolded with minor tearing as well as some foxing. A ready-made collection of the founding documents of this railroad company which starts in Boston winding its way across the state where it enters New York State at West Stockbridge. Although it eventually became a transcontinental railroad the railroad that became the Milwaukee Road began as the Milwaukee and Waukesha Railroad whose goal was to link the developing Lake Michigan port city of Milwaukee Wisconsin with the Mississippi River. The company incorporated in 1847 but changed its name to the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad in 1850 before construction began. A report to the Board of Directors explaining that the railroad is not completed to Waukesha as was expected and offering reasons for the delay in its completion. "Considering our small beginning only a little over one year ago - that we have relied solely on the resources of the people of Wisconsin for the means of prosecuting this enterprise - without seeking foreign aid - with only the small contributions of each of our thousand Stockholders and the credits based on the securities of our city and citizens we have in that time completed the grade of our Road for twenty and a half miles laid the Track and brought into actual use the half of that distance - and will have the whole completed and in successful operation by the middle of February next." Information on estimated and actual costs of the First Division extending the road from Milwaukee to Waukesha. It appears that actual costs far exceeded estimates "but that has been the result of peculiar circumstances under which the work has been performed and by the adoption of a rail of greater weight than that estimated." It was determined that the contractors to whom jobs had been given at lower costs were inexperienced and inefficient resulting in their work having to be re-done. Furthermore the delay was caused by some stockholders not promptly paying the small installment of only 5% every three months thus leaving a deficit. Also a bank in a marsh sunk and had to be built back up. Th cost of constructing the first twenty and 1/2 miles is only $9495 per mile. Report ends with the reassurance that the Road will be complete by February and if weather permits perhaps even earlier. 8 1/4" x 21 1/2" map of the Milwaukee and Mississippi Rail-Road. El pregunton the inquirer presents 11 questions or rather criticisms disguised as questions to those desiring independence from Spain. From the date of publication one notes that the war of independence has gone on for a little over a year and Hidalgo has been captured and executed. The pregunton is clearly in opposition to the forces for independence in Mexico. Nevertheless his questions walk a fine line between praising Spain and also criticizing it particularly the last viceroy Iturigurray. The author is identified by Beristain Bibliteca Hispano-americano as Francisco Estrada a native of Durango and prominent member of the clergy in Mexico city Tepotzotlan and Atotonilco. All of his writings are in the nature of pamphlets and have an anti-independence theme.Medina 10722 Rather rare OCLC listing only 5 copies one copy at auction.
