Upper board recently re-hinged with new leather all along the joint and a strip of matching marbled paper along the hinge. All edges gilt; marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Edmund H. Turton of Larpool House to front pastedown. Browning to some leaves. Rubbing and chipping to lower edge and corner; corners lost to A1 and A2 at the beginning of the second section. Black ink ownership inscriptions of Edmund H. Turton to top margin of title page and to the top margin of A1 in the second section. A large tear to S2 in the second section. Very good. John Turton 1735-1806 was the personal physician to King George III during his many years of madness and though his main residence was Brasted Place in Kent he acquired Larpool Hall in Yorkshire in about 1804. Edmund Peters 1796-1857 inherited the estates of his great-uncle John including Larpool Hall on reaching the age of 21 in 1817 and took the Turton name. It opens to reveal marbled end-papers which are followed by after the ownership signatures an attractive engraving of the wise men with baby Jesus which has been laid down on the blank lead preceding the title page. This page was added later and not part of the original book.<br /> The text is ruled in red throughout. AEG. In good condition with binding completely intact but some aging to the paper. Gold edges are very good. Some occasional scattered foxing The provenance can be traced through the inked ownership and later gift inscription! Report: Perforations down left edge from office binding. Very well preserved. Book: with some dustiness signs of handling small nicks. Very good. Agatha Christie's The Pale Horse was published by Collins Crime Club on 6th November 1961; ABPC at Elstree received their copy one month earlier and Common's report was ready two days after publication. November 1961 is very favourable. A detailed two-page synopsis is followed by a succinct and unequivocal recommendation: 'This one has excellent filmic possibilities I consider. Make an offer.' No film version followed but the story has been adapted twice for television the first time in 1996 for ITV and the second in 2010 as part of the Agatha Christie's Marple series also for ITV with Julia McKenzie in the title role. Griffiths 1807/3. John Reeves was gazetted King's Printer in 1800 and held the appointment for 29 years until his death. Between 1801 and 1815 he issued some 25 editions of the Book of Common Prayer each printed by others on his behalf. This edition was printed by C. Whittingham. The plates in this copy are all dated February 1807. The Companion to the Altar was printed for Scatcherd and Letterman by Rider and Webb by assignment from T. Beecroft and was issued 'in various sizes so as to bind up with the different editions of the Common Prayer Book' ref. note at foot of title page. The Irish poet hymnist and lyricist Nahum Tate 1652-1715 became England's poet laureate in 1692. He is best remembered for the New Version of the Psalms of David first published in 1696 in which he collaborated with Nicholas Brady. Tate wrote the words to a number of hymns of which the most famous is the Christmas carol known today by its opening line 'While shepherds watched their flocks by night'. He also wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas in 1689. Nicholas Brady 1659-1726 was an Anglican clergyman and poet also born in Ireland. John Reeves unknown
