Preserved in a new marbled slipcase.

R. McLean Victorian Book Design 1972 pp.88-90.
Owen Jones 1809-1874 architect and designer was interested in historical ornament as an inspiration for modern design and striving to determine universal principles of design studied both oriental and western arts. In this work Jones clearly echoed the hand-illuminated work of medieval breviaries psalters and books of hours. "The book was well printed by Vizetelly Brothers and must have been a considerable undertaking since it consisted of over 500 pages all printed in two or three colours" McLean. The complex wood-engraved borders were in widely varying styles and were printed in black blue and red combined or in such single colours as yellow green lilac blue red or brown. Additionally there were eight strikingly printed illuminated divisional 'title pages' chromolithographed in gold red blue and green. Additionally there are full-page woodcut plates by John C. Horsley and Henry Warren with engraved borders and a tint over the print. and 37 wood engravings after Raphael and others throughout the text. The result was "one of the most important examples of Owen's commercial decoration" McLean. The book was initially issued in eight parts and was later republished in 1850 and in 1863 in fewer colours and without the chromolithographed 'title pages'. The work is also "of great interest in tracing the work done by Baxter's apprentices" Lewis. Jones had his own press and with his co-worker H. N. Humphreys "developed several totally new binding styles using materials such as papier mâché terracotta and embossed leather which were more fitted to the sumptuous contents" O.D.N.B. It is likely that the binding of this copy was designed by Jones even if not created in his workshop.
C. T. 22909THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. New York: New York Common Prayer and Book Society 1853. First edition thus. Original full sheep gilt morocco label gilt. Worn but a solid copy in the original publisher's binding. Twain arrived in New York City after leaving St. Louis and went to work as a type-setter at John Gray's firm on Monday August 29 1853 and stayed there until mid-October when he left for Philadelphia. He wrote home to his mother on August 31 saying that he and forty other type-setters set type for an "immense" number of books and several magazines like The Knickerbocker New York Recorder Choral Advocate Jewish Chronicle Littell's Living Age and the Irish American. Most of the books published by Gray in 1853 were religious pamphlets and some anti-slavery texts; this is one of the few substantial books he published that year. Gray's four story building was next-door to the huge Harper Brothers pre-fire complex and it is possible that they were also farmed out work by Harper for publications without using their own printer's slug. unknown

19691319
Folded poster-pamphlet with texts and images printed in black ink on cream paper stock opens to large color poster on verso. 4to opens to 17.5 x 22.5 in Near fine ; old central crease. Loose folded sheet. 1319

A delightfully riotous publication with texts attributed to former King Mob member Phil Cohen and associates in the London Streeet Commune. The poster illustration on the pamphlet's verso depicts a youth with a huge erection being sentenced to correction bu authorities at a "Penal Institution." Our expert source informs us that Agro was printed in an attempt to organize London's hippie greaser and skinhead youth cultures to work together against ruling class oppression rather than antagonize one another. "At the end of 1969 the pilot – and only! – issue of Agro tried to mobilize the skinhead opinion. The paper 'printed by the Gutter Press' bore the stamp of the London Street Commune and most of it in fact consisted of an abridged version of 'Project Free London' a small booklet to which I shall refer again. An editorial claimed that Agro would be produced and distributed not from an office but through an informal network of 'skinheads greasers heads; in pubs caffs clubs and on the streets'. The Commune was worried because skinheads and greasers had mobilized against each other instead of against straight society and they saw Agro as a way of combining forces as a 'single subcultural front.'" Extremely rare. 1726AQ31788London: Printed by George James Printer to the Honourable City of London 1726. Single leaf broadside. Somewhat marked with some creasing and tearing to extremities especially at horizontal folds. A rare survival of an early eighteenth-century broadside reprinting - ordered to be distributed within the capital by the Common Council of the City of London Corporation - of two specific English laws applying severe penalties to negligent careless and criminal servants. The vast majority of the Common Council of the City of London Corporation were issued either in folio or as here broadside format. As the preamble states the intention of this was so that this legal reminder could be be 'sent into the several Wards' of London 'and by the Beadles delivered to every House-keeper that all Servants may be acquainted with the same and know the Penalties therein contain'd'. The two specific laws highlighted are 'the Clause relating to Servants in a late Act of Parliament passed in the Sixth Year of Queen Anne.Entituled An Act for the better Preventing Mischiefs that may happen by Fire' and 'also another Clause relating to Servants.Entituled An Act for the more effectual Preventing and Punishing of Robberies that shall be committed in Houses'. The first as the broadside shows made the provision for the forfeiture of 'One hundred Pounds unto the Church-Wardens of such Parish where such Fire shall happen to be distributed amongst the Sufferers by such Fire' by any 'Servant or Servants' who 'thought Negligence or Carelessness shall fire or cause to be fired any Dwelling-House or Out-House or Houses'. The second barred 'all and every Person or Persons that shall be at any time from and after the First Day of July in the Year 1713 feloniously steal any Money Goods or Chattels Wares or Merchandizes of the Value of Forty Shillings or more.shall by Virtue of this Act be abolutely debarr'd of and from the Benefit of Clergy'.
