Alison Riley usa il linguaggio giuridico inglese come strumento per studiare il common law aprendo così la via ad una conoscenza contemporanea del linguaggio giuridico inglese e del sistema giuridico di common law, non limitato, questo, al solo campo del diritto civile, ma esteso anche al diritto pubblico, in genere quindi sia al penale, sia al costituzionale, sia all'internazionale. Il percorso offerto da questo libro non si limita quindi a favorire la conoscenza della lingua giuridica, ma assieme al percorso linguistico, propone anche un percorso giuridico basato sulla tradizione degli ordinamenti di common law, e in particolare, dell'ordinamento inglese: imparare il linguaggio, ma attraverso il linguaggio, approfondire anche gli istituti, le fonti, alcuni concetti e principi base, il metodo di ragionamento del common lawyer e la formazione della regola di origine giurisprudenziale. Il volume è suddiviso in capitoli e lo scopo di ciascun capitolo è di dare informazioni sulle comuni strutture grammaticali che caratterizzano i testi legali, pur offrendo l'opportunità di riflettere ed esercitarsi utilizzando brevi esercizi denominati "tasks" e comprensione globale con Language Focus tasks.
